It’s just $30 and even more importantly you get a good processor without having to store a base!
I won’t buy one, but this is what I’d use one for if I had it:
Hummus (currently do in the vitamix)
Prep garlic, onion and ginger en mass
Coleslaw
Carrots for carrot cake
No one asked this, but did you know that if you already have a KitchenAid mixer you can use it as a food processor, too? With an attachment you have to pay for, of course. But I think it’s cool becausse the main reason I didn’t use my food processor often was because I hated dragging it and all its parts out of the cupboard. My KitchenAid is always out, so maybe this thing will help. Someone in my house broke my food processor and I was trying to decide if I wanted to replace it even if I don’t use it all that often. And I found this and thought it was cool and wanted to share. Food Processor Attachment KSM1FPA | KitchenAid
Seconding Vitamix for an expensive but BIFL purchase. My parents each had one and my dad’s was probably 15 years old, the speed adjustment dial had gone out but it was still working fine. My mom is still using hers. It’s probably 25 years old by now!
I didn’t know that! I also just found out there’s some grating attachment?! Which I kind of want now.
ETA: Also re specific recs, I have the cheapest Ninja (with just the smoothie cups) and it works really well even with ice and whole frozen fruit! I also have an inexpensive food processor, Cuisinart brand and it’s one of the most basic models, it also works really well and I’ve had it for years!
I might have given it away I disliked it so much. Perhaps if I needed an accommodation to make carrot cake more regularly, I might have tried to figure it out, but the shadowy one doesn’t like carrot cake, and everything else is easy enough to do by hand atm. It often left large pieces uncut and they’d jam the mech, or the cutters wouldn’t seat properly and jump out.
eta: I looked, and it appears this is slightly different from what I had, so they might have resolved the issues, but I’d be careful
Ah, damn. Good to know though, thank you! Grating is a super difficult motion for me but I know there are also stand alone automatic graters? If I try it I’ll definitely make sure it’s returnable.
And there are definitely food processors with good graters! It might mean making sure you buy one that’s returnable or searching for that in the reviews. Restaurant food processors with graters aren’t tooooo big and are definitely quality.
Ooooo, I hadn’t thought about a restaurant grade processor! For some reason I was just focused on a stand alone grater? But I’d rather have fewer one-use tools not more.
Seconding Cuisinart grating blade. Mine works great for everything! I recommend popping a softer cheese in the freezer for 30-60 min before grating to make it easier…but it still works even if its soft, just more messy
Thirding! I would consider Cuisinart sort of midrange, and I have one (it’s about 15 years old now) and the grating disks have always worked well for me, when I can be bothered to set it up. (To be fair - I don’t have room to just leave it out, but it is heavy, so for small jobs I do by hand. But it isn’t super giant to leave out, I just have really limited space.)
