Oh yeah my other comment from the peanut gallery is that if there is an option to check luggage, I pretty much always do. I know there’s a risk of it being lost or damaged, but for me the stress of getting a big, heavy thing into an overhead bin (FAR above my head) is too much. Worth it in my opinion $$
If it’s relevant to the conversation I don’t ever check luggage and am unlikely to start now.
Hard shell can be easily cleaned.
- Degree. Spinner. Wheels.
Regardless of hard or soft.
soft is lighter. I have the Travelpro maxlite 5 international carryon which is 5.4lbs and has wheels that can be replaced/repaired. It does not fit as a Flair carryon, but does for Air Canada and Allegiant. Hard cases can crack, especially the cheap ones.
I have heard 2 wheels are better than the 360 spinners for cobblestones and uneven ground. ymmv.
I found mine at winners and just went and tried a whole bunch to see how they felt in my hands and lifting etc. obviously they will be different when they are full, but it was a quick way to see what is out there.
For carry-on I would absolutely go soft, that should give you both a few outside pockets which for me always come in handy but it also has the option to squish down at least marginally if you need to jam it somewhere. For checked bags I prefer hard case (protection, plus that’s exactly where I don’t want something like an outside zipper to have the option to get caught on something), but that’s a much rarer travel situation for me.
If you use an app on your phone to play music that you own or have acquired a digital copy of, what do you use?
Also, should my midlife crisis be a record player?
- Audify music
- Yes
I’ve never left Itunes now Apple Music
Lately I’ve been feeling a lot of regret over the many CDs I decluttered over the years and now I’m shopping for a CD player, lol, so I am pro midlife crisis record player!
I am feeling this way about my CDs too! But the scratches (obviously records get scratches too). And my tapes. Anyway, if we unsubscribe from everything we can use our allowance on one album a month, right?
Also the library! Will have many discs! I don’t play a lot on my phone, but I use VLC (android).
Bandcamp is a site/ app for buying music that you get to own and keep forever. As in download and have on your hard drive with no DRM. They don’t have a massive library but there’s some good ones on there.
Every so often they do Bandcamp Friday where they don’t take a cut of sales and 100% of it goes to the artist.
I so miss the anticipation of waiting and saving for a new CD to come out, or going to Barnes and Noble and using the communal headphones to listen to the 30 sec sample of songs on an album.
My cd library is very reflective of a specific time period and I need to round it out some more
I, too, am thinking about going back to a CD player, but in truth - when I had to consciously deal with CDs I rarely listened to music…
Me about CDs ![]()
No, no I really still only listen to Green Day and Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows…
Plex, mostly because I run a media server on my home network, but possibly that’s overkill for what you’re looking for. Also they’ve recently gotten annoying about accessing things from outside my home network, but since I still have an ancient clip-on mp3 player it’s more a vague annoyance than anything else.
Parent’s spouse got a record player a couple years ago and loves it, but the record storage may be becoming an issue.
Mine is hard on the bottom and soft on the top. I like it a lot and I’ve had it for more than 20 years (it’s a very beat up Samsonite).
If this was not an option I would go for soft, I find it very annoying the way hard luggages usually open up in the middle, and I want most of my stuff in one big compartment.
I’m team hard side luggage. I like the opening in the middle with one side tucked away and zippered up. They are also mostly water resistant which has proved comforting when watching my poor suitcase sit in the loading trolley in a downpour. Hard sided suitcases are less likely to be denied carry on on the annoying airlines since they will stay the size you bought and not budge out of line depending on packing.
Find out which airline you use that has the tiniest carry on size restriction. Buy one that size. Never worry again if your carryon will be accepted at the gate.
I would normally suggest buying TWO suitcases, one in the tiny carry-on size and another in a standard larger carry on size, but I have known you long enough.
