Oh Ares sheds constantly - and tracks in dirt, and all kinds of nastiness. But twice a year he completely changes his jacket, and blows his coat. That’s when the fluff comes out of him in clumps.

He was curious about it at first - wtf is this thing? Is it a friend? could it play?

But it moves too slowly for him, and now he completely ignores it.

It is smart enough to not fall down the stairs, so I usually carry it to a room, or upstairs, or wherever, close the doors and have it do one room at a time. If I give Oscar too much space, he gets confused as to where he is.

Do you have a friend with a robot vac they could bring over to see how he reacts? Maybe in exchange for dinner or something? My Danes hid from ours. Current dogs are a little nervous but basically ignore it.

Ok I’m glad we don’t have a coat blowing season, haha. Oliver seems to just consistently shed a ton every day, but never chunks like double coated dogs do.

Maybe Oliver could learn to ignore a robot. He is 50% terrified and 50% “must attack” towards the regular vacuum right now.

This is a good idea! I will have to ask around

At first I thought “it” was referring to the fluff from Ares’ coat and was picturing him trying to play with a dog-sized pile of his fluff :joy:

OK, cutie patootie people who are good at shopping/Internet searching – I’ve got a tricky one. I’ve been stumped/haven’t found anything for a few days now.

I am looking for a kitchen island thing. doesn’t need to be front and back sided because I’m pushing it against the wall.

Notes:
• Must have two lean out trash doors AND a cabinet portion (doors or open) that will fit a microwave (20x12x15 ish). Doors or microwave spaces must be on front or right side, the cart will be pushed up next to my washing machine on its left side.
• All base cabinet level, I don’t want it higher than countertop height.
• I don’t care if it’s on wheels or not
• Butcher block style top
• Preference for white, but black could be a potential.
• prefer a pre-drilled cord hole or power strip built in, but I’m perfectly capable of drilling out a hole, so not a high preference.
• I would prefer to have all of this in one island/cart/piece but I guess I could begrudgingly put two together that have the things I need

Pictured below are a few that are close to a fit, but not quite it.

  1. Has the space for a microwave in the cabinet, and one trash can thingie, but I want two.

  1. Has two trash can thingies and a cabinet! So close… but the cabinet is just a few inches too small in all directions to fit a microwave. Soooooo close

What about a new, smaller microwave? This one is 17 x 10 x 13

I do not have this brand, but mine is this size. It is very small.

How do you feel about how small it is?
I must admit. I’m a below average cook and also don’t enjoy cooking, so I probably use my microwave for at least something six days a week.
Will I be losing my marbles?

I don’t use it to cook, but I use it to reheat thing from the fridge. It takes a little bit longer than a typical unit, mine is only 800 watts (I think a normal one is like 1000 or 1100). The only issue I have ever had is that you can’t pop microwave popcorn in it because the turntable and interior isn’t big enough and the bag will get stuck. :joy: I have no complaints though, I just use an old air popper or a pot with oil.

These islands are cute! If you have additional counter space and cabinet space from the island, would it be terrible to have a frequently used microwave on top of the island or on a different surface?

I have a smol microwave (but maybe not quite this small) and square plates and they don’t always rotate because squares don’t fit in circles. It just makes the cheese melt a little unevenly but otherwise is fine.

Haha, that’s a good point. I can add that normal sized 10 inch dinner plates (round ones) do fit fine in mine!

As a certified non-foodie microwave popcorn is one of the few foods/snacks I can say with certainty I actually like.
So this may be the dealbreaker.

Hmmm.
I definitely don’t want it on a countertop, but perhaps I can simply build a little shelf or shelf box for it. I’d prefer it be more hidden away though.

If this is a deal breaker I wouldn’t do it. I had bought a box and struggled mightily and mostly unsuccessfully with them, because I had bought them and didn’t want to waste them, and it was very frustrating and resulted in either burned popcorn or half unpopped kernels.

I have the small GE one whose dimensions I shared. We batch cook and microwave about half our meals for a family of 4 and I truly haven’t noticed that it’s small. We have large square plates that don’t fit, but everything else (big soup & pasta bowls, big mugs, etc.) fits without a problem.

For popcorn, I use the 9 cup version of this and it fits without a problem. The Popper - Movie Theater Popcorn At Home | W&P

I have a similar small GE but it’s more square. I love how small it is, but I had no idea that a quart sized mason jar would be too tall for it. I freeze a lot of soups and sauces in jars and use the microwave on defrost mode when I’m crunched for time…so yeah, I just didn’t realize how limiting it would be!

That’s a bummer. :frowning: Mine fits quart sized jars, so definitely model/brand dependent!

You can get those little glass popcorn poppers. Ours fits fine in the microwave (which is small as it’s just for leftovers and melting butter.)

I own that too! But something about having it in a bag is “better”. lol.
