I have a kindle that’s a few years old (paper white), and it works great with the library. I can transfer via usb or via Wi-Fi, and it’s super easy.
Edited to add: my library generally has everything I want to read in kindle format, along with epub, etc. I cannot get epub format to work on my kindle, (though I have not tried very hard), which may be part of what other folks have had issues with.
Kindle has a proprietary file format and refuses to commit to epub, the standard everyone else in the industry uses. (It was only about a yearish ago that they created interoperability where if you send an epub to Kindle it auto-converts the file vs making you do it yourself but I think it’s still kinda clunky to do)
Overdrive/Libby makes Kindle library books semi-seamless nowadays IF you are able to sideload Overdrive/Libby, but 1) some titles are never available in Kindle format cause Amazon & original publisher might be having A Moment just like any other business competitor shenanigans and 2) the library might have to pay extra for Kindle & epub option (same general ebook fuckery publishers always pull, not Amazon specific).
Old Kindles (the kind senior patrons tend to have inherited & want to use cause it was a bargain) basically have to get jailbroken before you can use them with modern book formats. Plus, the system of being logged into an Amazon account with a password (esp if one can barely remember their email address + password) + the clunky content management system of deleting books = a massive PITA for anyone not tech familiar. The extra steps just aren’t intuitive.
So to sum up…it’s fine for a user experience for a tech savvy user considered compared to how it used to be. I do not trust Amazon not to block Overdrive someday, and all the other lending services keep merging in ways that make a showdown seem sort of inevitable eventually. FWIW Overdrive is now owned by a private equity firm (KKR, who now in 2023 are purchasing Simon & Schuster…) so that is concerning in a different way.
I have actually been using my Kindle this way for years so I am familiar with the drawbacks. I don’t usually delete books- I don’t read enough on there that it has filled up (mostly just use on vacation) and as long as you never connect to wifi they do not expire. I’m just wondering if I should get another Kindle or consider other options (so far it sounds like Kobo is the only other game in town).
I’m actually a professional librarian. Many of us are def. concerned about the Overdrive merger.
Right, I was aware - I am a librarian too! Yes, at this point it’s basically choose your capitalist horse in the race (Kindle vs Kobo), except I personally would not choose Kindle for giftees who are not already in the Amazon ecosystem.
Nooks still exist but honestly even B&N does not seem very enthusiastic about them, so I wouldn’t mess with them.
Yeah don’t get a Nook. My husband had a nook and he had a hard time getting books on them other than buying from Barnes and Noble. Yes it can be done but it was a multi-step process for each book.
Canadian libraries and kindle don’t even pretend to be friends. But it seems like US libraries and kindle are kinda faking it?
I went down the rabbithole last year and tried to find a cheaper knock-off and fell in love with higher end third party ones and now I read on my phone
Soooo… the reason I have been using a 2nd gen Kindle that I bought on ebay for $30 like a pretentious hipster is that I like pushing a button to turn the page. Those early kindles didn’t even have touch screens! It has a tiny physical keyboard.
You know what else has push buttons for turning the pages? High-end Kobos.
I read on my phone a lot - it is always with me - even though it is my least favorite way to read and also I get distracted by social media, but I like to have an ereader for:
-Transferring library ebooks that are about to expire
-Travel, esp. in case I need to give my phone to a child whose tablet has died and/or am saving battery on my phone
I have a first-Gen Kindle and a shiny new Kindle (ok, a year old now). I read library books acquired through Libby on them. I turn off the Wi-Fi if my checkout is about to expire, but I’ve never done a usb transfer with either of them, so I don’t know how well that works.
Food processor recommendations? Also how big is it because Mr Meer send to think they’ll be smaller/less heavy then our blender. I feel like if it has a decent motor it’s still going to be a beefy boi.
I highly recommend the Cuisinart Pro Custom food processor. I think they have several sizes. My mom has had one for at least 30 years, and I bought mine when I got my first big girl job out of college, 12 years ago and it’s still perfect! I wouldn’t say it’s less heavy than a blender, the base is about the same weight as my blender base
ETA: You might actually check on eBay. Older Cuisinart are known to be higher quality, and it looks like they have some of the Pro Custom models for less than $70 with all of the accessories, which will probably last longer than a newer more expensive model.
I have the Cuisinart 7-cup, which I think is the smallest “regular” size they have (had). It’s about 15 years old, and still work great. The base is a heavy mo fo, and has a footprint of ~ 8"x9". It’s a tiny bit larger footprint than my Blendtec blender (which is ~7"x8"), and it weighs more. I value and appreciate them both, I use them for different things.
My old Cuisinart started to smell like something burning so I reluctantly bought a new one. The new one SUCKS. I don’t remember what kind it is but it has only 1 blade and the dough is always wrapped around it.
@meerkat - I would be surprised if it was lighter than your blender. I mean, I guess my Vitamix is heavier but it’s not enough to notice from a practical standpoint. If you want something small and light I would get a mini chopper if you don’t already have one. THAT I have had for at least 15 years.
Not exactly personal experience but I’m lusting for a Ninja food processor/blender. I got their little “pod on top” one for $40 in grad school, when they were a new brand no one had heard of… and the damn thing won’t die so I don’t have a reason to upgrade!
I also feel like they put thought into designing the best appliance and having an edge on the market, whether it’s power, extra blades/different flow pattern, etc. Some of it may be gimmick but like Oxo I just find their stuff reliably pleasant to use! Just got the air fryer after much consideration, because the ninja one goes 50degF hotter than others and that seemed pertinent to the use case.
Good food processors are way heavier than most blenders. (Maybe not top of the line ones? I’ve never had a super swanky blender) Husband explained to me once. Something about them being DC and having a lot of copper in the base. We’ve been happy with our cuisinart from Costco but I’ll do a side by side in a moment- they’re hefty things.
I know it’s been asked here a few times so here’s my recommendation. I’ve needed new bras for probably a year and have been putting it off. After failed attempts from Aerie and Target I ordered from under outfit and they are amazing! If you want something without an under wire but not all the way to a sports bra they are great!
I am looking for an app, an app to send me reminders of Shit to Get Done.
I am not opposed to paying for this app, but also, I am not keen on monthly fees. I’d be happier with a one-time purchase
Requirements:
Multiple to-do lists
ability to program recurring tasks
If a recurring task is missed one week, the next time it is checked off it checks off all the overdue instances (Ie, if I schedule ‘clean the bathroom’ for weekly on Mondays, and we miss a Monday, I don’t want to have to check it off twice to catch up. When I do clean that bathroom, I’m thoroughly cleaning it once you know?)
Nice to have:
Ability to assign tasks to family members
Ability to pull everything due ‘today’ into one list from the various lists (ie, day at a glance?)
So far, I have tried:
Microsoft ToDo - did not like it because if I miss doing a recurring task, when I do check it off it doesn’t check them all off. If there is a way to check off all occurrences of a task, I haven’t found it BUT that would make this one viable (ie, right now it is telling me I needed to clean my bathroom in February of 2023. to make that go away, I’ll have to check it off for once a week between then and now)
Google Tasks - This is what I’ve settled on for now. Would prefer if it had it’s own interface, instead of being a sidebar on google calendar.
Wunderlist - this got bought (I think by google) a few years ago, but I used it until that point
I’m working in an Android + microsoft desktop environment
Edit - I just opened up ToDo to try again (I was in it last week also) - and now I can skip to current task? Either this is new this week or I just needed to bitch about it not existing to be able to find it
