Vidja Games - They'll Rot Yer Brain!

Thanks for trying, but that didn’t help :joy: The big thing that popped out to me immediately is that the interface is 100% meant for a computer. Like, there is a cursor that you move around using the direction toggle and then “click” like you would with a mouse using the keys on the right. It’s SO STRANGE. I did fine when I “learned” the spell, but now that I have to use the spell I’m pressing the buttons that it says to press and it’s not actually doing the spell so they just kill me.

I think I’m going to put the game away and maybe in the future I’ll try it again. Sometime when I have more brain power available to figure things out and deal with the frustration. Right now I need something easy that I can just use to relax for a few minutes after the girls go to bed, while watching tv with DH.

Gotcha - been almost a year since I played. I see on there you have to hold the right trigger button in and then also press one of the shape buttons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUicHec_878

Assuming it’s assigned to the slot needed and all that. Hopefully it’s not a bug and you’re able to figure it out (when you feel like it )

What Games Should I Get

I LOVE my airplane time for this.

So Suika game is the best $2.99 our household has spent in a long time. It’s a combine these falling fruits to make other fruits game on the Switch and probably elsewhere. It is relaxing but also with enough frustration that you don’t get sucked in forever just making fruits into other fruits. AND today they came out with dlc that lets you do a two player competition and I am very excited to play against N.

Any recs for the Switch for a youngster? Bonus points if it’s in the cheap/in the sale (not sure if that’s UK/europe specific or not?)

We already have Mario kart 8 (is the extra races pack worth it?) kiddo likes racing games/puzzles/ a bit of adventure /platform type stuff. Not a fan of puzzle games with lots of timers though. Sonic, Pokemon etc. anything trucks/ cars/ building/ smashing. All very stereotypical. although personally I’m pissed that all the Zelda’s are a 12 except the one with a male protagonist…

Already have Minecraft although haven’t tried it on the switch yet. A bit of mild cartoon violence ok since that ship has sailed and he’s not easily frightened and we discuss it. He’s only 5.5 but freakishly capable as long as there aren’t too many words as he can’t read yet. A PGE 7 is usually fine.

If you have recs for PC games that can be played with an Xbox style controller or android tablet games I’m here for those too (although android is a Wild West tbh as the age ratings are extremely questionable and so many are ad supported or have tons of in app purchases)

Thanks!

Costume Quest and Costume Quest 2 are good PC games that can use an xbox controller. There is some reading but my kid was able to play it with minimal reading (he usually blows through the dialogue scenes anyway on any game, for better or worse).

Cat Quest is a cute PC game that also uses the xbox controller.

Thank you! The game controller for the PC is so helpful since so many of games use the keyboard to navigate AFAIK and he struggles to orientate himself even though he knows letters fine it’s just whole words that are tricky.

Kid hands are smaller than adult hands too so it can be harder for them to stretch fingers to all the keys too.

Hmmm how about

Untitled Goose Game - run around as a goose vaguely terrorizing a town. There are missions to do/puzzles to solve but even if he never did them running around honking at people is fun. There is one challenge I can’t get past but it is probably 3/4s of the way through

Katamari Reroll - Roll up objects into a giant ball. You get missions from the king of the cosmos like roll up a ball that is 1m in diameter or roll up all the fish. The king of the cosmos can be a little scary and disappointed in you if you fail the mission. I sometimes struggle with the mechanics, so might be too much for little hands

Suika Game - fruit dropping/ combining game. No timer, you drop the fruit so no like increasing drop rate. Very cute and soothing but incredibly repetitious song.

Ooblets - Combination farming, creature gathering, and dance battle game. Assemble a team of cute little guys to help you do missions, win dance battles and grow foods to cook treats on your farm.

Animal Crossing - build a life on an island inhabited by cute animals. Decorate your house, go fishing, catch bugs, etc.

Stardew Valley - Farming game where you make friends with towns people and collect resources. You do have to fight creatures in the mines. I don’t know how violent/scary that would be. I think @LadyDuck’s Duckling likes this so maybe she has more helpful thoughts.

Oooo thanks! I love the missions/dance battle one. What a combo!

Stardew valley requires me to read stuff for Duckling and it involves thinking, plus a “timer” in that the day starts & ends. So if you’re ok with playing with him, that might work. I sit next to Duckling or we play 2-player mode, which is fun for me.

Duckling also likes Mario Maker, we got that on the rec of a similarly agreed child. Make your own platform levels to run through!

Kirby and the forgotten land was a HUGE hit and he ran through that in a fortnight. Is still playing it, even after beating big boss.

We have to play with him a lot but having some games where we don’t have to is good. If I like the game I don’t mind a much. Perhaps we might leave stardew for a while. Although frankly I’d like to play it!

Plus we have spent an eye watering amount on electronic devices, accessories and games in the last 10 days so another reason to give it a rest. We can afford it, and it will all get used. But OUCH.

Just read LadyDuck’s thoughts on Stardew. There is a fair bit of reading in Ooblets too. Shows that I don’t have kids, I didn’t even think about kids not knowing how to read yet or not reading at a higher level yet :face_with_peeking_eye: Hope you all enjoy it if you do get it though.

No worries at all. I wouldn’t have thought of it if I didn’t have a kid! We don’t notice stuff unless it’s a problem for us :woman_shrugging:.

We want some words as it will help encourage him to read but to many and it becomes a part time job for us
