You can try, it’s tough to get through. I don’t know what they would do.
Was your return accepted?
Did you pay the $8 for freetaxusa deluxe? If so, you could also try chatting with their support to get to the bottom of what happened. At the very least it will make it easier to fix if/when you do need to file an amended return.
It was accepted. I think I will just wait a few days and see what happens.
I didn’t, but should have!
By any chance did you manage to report your W2 income on a schedule C? Did you deduct expenses for your W2 job? Did your withholding get reported correctly?
If so, I’m both impressed and really curious about how the program works.
I wish you’d reached out before you filed.
Processing your return is going to take a while. It’s going to get kicked into a pile where someone manually has to touch it. It may be obvious to someone what happened, or it may be kind of complex to them.
Sorry I’m using victory space for my now complaint!
I didn’t notice until after I hit send. I used them trying to not pay for turbo tax and messed it up. I believe I somehow did two schedule c? It should only be the one for $79, not the big one. Do these pics show you enough? Should I try to amend once that’s available? An incorrect federal is also going to make an incorrect state return isn’t it? I don’t need the money, it’s just annoying that I was dumb.
Yes, your state return is going to be wrong.
Is line 1a blank on your 1040? What’s in line 25a?
If you want to attach an anonymized version of page 2, that has helpful info too.
If you want to move this out of Tiny Victories (public part of forum) back into Journals (private) let me know where you move posts too.
I’d have to re-create your return to know if you’ve overpaid or underpaid at this point.
You’re likely being charged self-employment tax on your W2 income, that made your tax bill too high.
You got a break with the big QBI deduction, that will make your tax bill too low.
It’s not clear if you got credit for W2 withholding, if not, that would make your tax bill too high.
If it turns out you’ve overpaid, I’d worry a lot less than if you’ve significantly underpaid. I’ve only worked during tax season submitting returns; I’ve had very little experience with amended returns and none with more serious problems with the IRS. Finding an experience tax pro might not be a bad idea. I don’t know if the IRS looks at something like this and thinks, “super-confused taxpayer” or “audit.” If you’ve overpaid, I think “super-confused taxpayer” is much more likely.
I can help you figure out what a correct return would look like; let’s take that discussion offline.
Feel free to delete your screenshots here whenever you’d like.
Yes, 1a is blank. 25a has my correct payment. I believe this return is giving me about $1000 too much. I won’t owe money though.
SE tax was not assessed. Not sure what your tax rate is; Add the QBI back to your taxable income, + the $150 expenses that shouldn’t have been on you Sch C for your W2 job, use tax table in Pub 17 to look at your taxable income and see what should have been in line 16. Somehow you got credit for your withholding. I’m amazed that the program managed to do this!
Best case, I think, the IRS figures it out, decreases your refund and sends a letter.
But I don’t know enough to rule out an audit or other problems.
If FreetaxUSA is mangling all of their returns this badly, I bet the IRS is well aware of the issue and has a whole stack of returns with similar problems.
It could be a while before you see your refund.
Line 16 should have been 4466, about 1k higher. Thanks so much for your help! Should have sent in the paper ones I did.
I had to do an amended return a few years ago. It was not bad. Just a new version of the forms and an form explaining what changed.
I would recommend doing the amended return rather than waiting for your original to be processed. You need it for the state to be correct anyway.
Amending is not yet available on their site. Now it says “if you need to amend or correct your return, wait until you’ve received your refund” because the IRS often corrects them. But maybe for simple things, not a completely mucked up one! Ha. Obviously I should have caught it but I just don’t know how it even happened. I can totally play dumb if I need to, because I am.
Hey, I had one other thought about your situation.
By any chance, is Box 13 (statutory employee) checked on your W2?
This is pretty rare, but if you are in one of these job categories, it would explain what happened with your tax return. If you checked it by mistake, or it got checked by mistake when you uploaded your form, it would also explain what happened.
It is not checked on my W2, but it is on my large schedule c that shouldn’t have been done. It is not on the correct smaller schedule c. Will not checking that fix all of this?
Maybe? I’ve not used the program but usually there’s a place to enter the form. That’s where I’d look to make the change.
Thanks! I will keep looking to see when amending is available. Or do you think it is best just to wait and see if the IRS fixes it? Does it confuse things to amend while it’s in process?
Wait on the IRS. They are very likely to pick this up, correct it, and move on. If you get the full refund on your form, that’s when you amend.
Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it!
My local Kroger stores have these red “food waste reduction” bags where less ideal produce goes in. $1 or $1.50 for the bag depending on location. And often it’s like borderline worth it, some bruised apples or soft peppers that you lose some bad spots on. But lately there’s been a ton of soft tropical fruits which cracks me up. So… you let them ripen for me, AND they’re on sale now? Awesome today I got two perfect mangoes for $1 and yesterday I got 2 dragon fruit for $1.50. The dragon fruit are $5.99 each! If anything I should have let the dragonfruit soften longer. The dragonfruit was very exciting for the toddler even though she decided she “wasn’t so sure” about them, and now I’ve got yummy smoothie additions.
