My mom, who considers herself a feminist, sent a sexist joke to me and my husband and called it clever. “Husbands choosing pain colours must have a signed note from their wife.” I’m debating if it’s even worth replying back “I don’t think you’d think it’s clever if the genders were swapped”.

I have seen this several times on Buzzfeed “stories” on funny signs - like at least 5 times (they reuse a LOT of material).
The equivalent for us would be
Sign in doctor’s office:
“Women wishing to get their tubes tied must have a signed note from their husband”

My mom is redoing an apartment with her (male) partner who has worked in construction for decades. It’s a complete gut job and his knowledge is definitely coming in handy, but my mom definitely has Opinions and it’s easy to lean on old sexist tropes when it comes to getting her own way on decorating or choosing fixtures or whatever. But also she’s 70+ and if I push back I’ll be seen as being mean to her so it feels kinda lose-lose.

When I’m being reasonable and thoughtful I consider if my comments will have any impact other than making me feel like I did something. With my parents and a lot of other people who are deeply entrenched in their worldview? I’m wasting my breath. With someone who is open to other viewpoints and wants to be growing, but might have a blind spot? Maybe my words will create an aha moment.
But most of the time I run my mouth because of who I am as a person.
