This might fall in knitting, but I finally redid the buttons on my cardigan so that the thread goes through the button band ribbon (i hadn’t known when i bought it that Mokuba is such a Thing) and not just through the knit fabric.
Now I won’t be distorting the fabric so much when I button.
So it all depends on what you’re changing for. When you start changing curves things can get tricky but it’s definitely doable. Things like shortening the rise where it hits near the belly can be simple, but adding fullness at the hip can be trickier (but not impossible by any means)
I think I’ve “solved” it by cutting out an inch or so of the pattern near the waist band.
Now I’m awash with DECISIONS. It’s HAAARD…
I have two options fabric wise on-hand that I COULD use for these pants. One is a plain brown cotton lawn. The other is a light grey mid-weight linen.
I intend these pants to go with the frock coat when I make it, which will be made out of a redish brown and white stripe wool/silk blend.
Fashion plates show men wearing light colored pantaloons pretty frequently, and I think color wise it’s a much better match. But suddenly I’m torn on the fabric content.
I got rid of the awful brick of a kitchen table, and I’m so glad! But now I have nowhere to set up my sewing machine…oops?
In other news, I removed tags from a pair of linen pants today (who the heck wants scratchy tags on hot weather clothes?) and finished mending six holes in my favorite tank top.
The two pairs of linen pants I have are the first pieces of clothing that I’ve bought in months, and I got rid of so much the last couple of times I moved. Starting from low numbers, it feels a lot easier to keep up on things like mending, and when thrift shops open up again I can slowly add back on to fill in any gaps.
Except sweaters. No more sweaters.
Back on topic, mending by hand feels almost meditative.
I am converting a larger pair of pants to maternity/soft stretchy waistband. Deconstruction was the easy part and now I’m having to make decisions on exactly how I want to add the waistband. I think I’ll sew up the fly and then cut the whole thing lower across the front, or do a V shape like my favourite “maternity” underwear (which is the ONLY kind I wear at all now because my uterus pouch needs space). I have dark grey ribbing and some thick elastic to use.
Now making more practical pants. Not videoing these ones as there’s no value to it, but making shorts versions of the sweat pants I’ve made before.
New considerations:
Despite using the correct needle (ball pointed) and trying to use a walking foot attachment (sighs) my machine hates knit fabric and eats it straight into the feed dogs. I’m probably going to sew these by hand.
I don’t have any more elastic so will probably try to make a draw string for the waist band.
the shadowy one just came by and said I looked pleased with myself. I said that you had said you weren’t going to do a video because there was no value and I was convincing you to, and they said ‘they just need to put a cat there’ - and I showed them my screen.
I’m looking for lining that would be used in basic garments (pants, etc.) doesn’t need to be fancy at all, preferably cotton??? The jacket-type lining doesn’t seem like the right call.
Cotton sateen??
I feel you. It is currently 87 with 79% humidity and my asthma is real bad and it feels like I am drowning even though there’s no AQ issues or anything. (At least, I hope it is asthma… ) No chance of rain, at least this heat is supposed to break tomorrow…
