Anecdata: I have a friend who is an MD/PhD who starts her babies on solids at 4 months sharp. Maybe even the premies??

I was encouraged to with Latte, since her weight was still dropping percentiles. Around four (4.5?) months, I was encouraged to offer her some purée style solids, like yogurt. The hope was, because she didn’t have any issues with transferring milk or anything, that additional food sources would result in higher intake so that she wouldn’t keep dropping percentiles. Frankly, it didn’t work lol. Her tongue thrust reflex was way too strong anyway. She didn’t actually consume anything of any note until she was above six months of age anyway. Just resulted in her spitting a ton of avocado puree around and stuff :woman_shrugging:

One of my kids hated solids and one of them could not take her eyes off our utensils while we were eating. At 4 months she was leaning forward with her mouth open. It seemed cruel not to feed her. Lol

Same. Kids, man.

Disclaimer that my kid who loved solids at 4 months turned out not to be getting enough breastmilk - I know your kids are grown but for anyone reading this with babies now - maybe count the wet diapers just in case!

Oddly, the one who wanted food was much plumper than the one who did not - she managed to gain 2 ounces in the 36 hours after her birth and did not look back from there!

My BFF’s kid stole a chunk of nectarine and swallowed it whole just before 4mo and that kid was ready to steal any food left even vaguely within reach (i had a slightly older child and got a panicked phone call, and did reassure her the kids was going to be quite ok!) Definitely kid dependant, and the doctor can be right that they can start if they want and also be a bad dr for other reasons.

Is 3 months too young for separation anxiety?? Ziti cries when anyone else other than me holds her in the hour or so before bedtime. It’s an extreme preference at the very least I guess? I hate it. I want to have a calm story time with my toddler but instead I’m listening to my husband shush a screaming baby and I feel compelled to intervene (which is probably not helping things).

TCB calls it preference

Sigh

I mean it’s great that she feels comforted in my presence… but it is contributing to the trapped feelings

I’m sorry.

Rough. I hope she loosens up her preferences for bedtime cuddles soon. We’ve been through several rounds with each kid, and it does end, and they do get easier each time to reason with.

My 7 mo old LOVES food. He eats a ton of solids, and gets really excited by all foods.

At first I thought this was awesome and he’s just a food motivated kid. Now I’m wondering if it is actually a problem of him not getting enough milk? We are exclusively nursing so idk how to measure besides doing weighted feeds.

I’m going to talk to his doctor at the next appointment but I was wondering at what point you all would worry? Am I making a problem out of nothing??

Things I’m doing: nursing before any solids, monitoring diapers (seem normal), he is a super happy kid and doesn’t seem to be fussy or upset often, he seems like he eats both sides pretty well. Our only struggle is he gets super distractable so sometimes he will have a bad eat if it’s not a calm environment.

I love exclusively nursing because it forces me to break free from metrics and my engineering tendencies. But now I’m questioning everything!

Anecdata: When LB wasn’t getting enough milk, he was excited about solids at 4/5 months, not 7, and his wet diapers were borderline.

It sounds good to me! Obvioiusly ask your doctor, but I’m sure they will say that if he’s having enough wet diapers, it’s probably all good. He probably just loves food!

I think it’s extremely normal for “I love solids” type kids to have an OMG FOOD period around then, plus all kids have surges in appetite around growth periods frequently in the 0-12m range. I wouldn’t worry personally! I don’t see any red flags in there.

If you’re getting plenty of wet diapers and he’s growing, I wouldn’t worry.

Kiddo loved food because of the novelty of it. He was getting breast milk and formula before that so he definitely had access to enough calories, he just thought the new flavors and textures were pretty neat.

Yep, sounds like a normal kid!

+1! I would only worry if he drops off of his curve and diapers aren’t what you expect
