Random Questions, Parenting Edition

This is when I started googling the snoo multiple times a night. It might be worth it to rent for a few months because they can stay swaddled safely a little longer and it adds motion for getting to sleep and soothing. (We never ended up getting it because every day I didn’t order it the opportunity cost seemed to be even higher, but I kinda wish we did.)

If you haven’t read it already, precious little sleep has lots of science based strategies for sleep training with no judgement and options ranging from no crying all the way to full on cry it out.

We also started adding more food at this time. I’d collect letdown milk with the haaka all day and use that to give her a big bottle at bedtime. She could pound down twice her usual at bedtime and that helped with sleeping longer.

This is probably obvious but no lights on during middle of the night feeds (we had a red light turned on just dim enough for us to see). We didn’t do any engagement in the middle of the night besides rocking or walking around a dark room, even if she just cried.

Call any friends who have offered to help and tell them you need a long nap on the weekends and can they please come watch the baby.

Hang in there!

Yep! We don’t pick her up for a fuss, just a full on cry and after a little bit.

She is! She’s very cute in them lol.

Yeah she definitely does. She’ll eat 8-10 oz in the wake window before bed. And I’m with you on the solids. I don’t think that starting solids yet would be good, she doesn’t sit up well enough on her own.

I wish I could get her to eat more of her calories during the day, but she eats like 35-40 oz a day and gets 22-25 of that during the daytime, taking 3-4 ounces every 1.5-2 hours. It’s hard to get more in her during the day, she either just plain refuses or gets distressed and it just flows right back out of her.

We do shifts or we wouldn’t survive. Lol but also sob.

She gets tons of free wiggle time (most of her wake time!) and about an hour outside every day when we go for a walk. She tends to fall asleep on the walk though, so not sure how helpful it is? I’m looking forward to slightly nicer weather where I want to be outside when I’m not in motion - that’s not our current weather for sure.

We’ve implemented a bunch of the bedtime stuff! Like you and RL said about the regression, though … you just kind of have to white knuckle your way through.

I’m glad that at least we’re already doing most of the obvious tactics?

One thing I forgot to mention is that we moved Pipsqueak to her own room at 5 months and we all did better for it!

Both of my kids were snoo babies, but at around 4 months, I had to do CIO in the snoo. The 4 month sleep regression is real :grimacing::grimacing:.

No additional advice other than the fact that neither of my kids responded to “gentle” sleep training methods (and still don’t :grimacing:) so we did CIO. Baby (now almost 2) still cries when going to sleep and periodically at night* (but like - one or two cries, just to let us know that she is not happy), and Big brother (5) sleeps with Daddy as his roommate so we might not be the best examples…

*Based on consultation from Precious little sleep, 4 am is our cutoff. Before 4 am she cries it out, after 4 am she got fed (when we were still breastfeeding), and now she gets to watch Ms Rachel while lying on my chest while I close my eyes. Again, not role models here :joy::joy:

You are a warrior!! I forget if I sent it to you or not, but I have months 3-4 guidance from TCB. You are probably already doing all of it but just in case, let me know. It’s not her Ferber style handout, more working towards more independent sleep.

It really sounds like you are doing everything you can. It WILL pass!

I do have it! And should re read it…

Since I know we have other constipated kiddos on here…what’s the first step before going to miralax? Pipsqueak is prime to constipation but we usually can keep it under control with prunes and pears and flax seed. Lately her diet preferences have shifted and I think she’s getting less liquids/fiber so it’s not cutting it. Is there a metamusil dose for kids? Any other ideas?

What works for us:

First thing AM, probiotic drops by spoon and cod liver oil followed by warm water. This is daily maintenance. If it’s been more than 48 hours without a BM, I pull a frozen portion (muffin tin size) of this out of the freezer to thaw and give her with lunch.

Oh and she can’t have cheese like ever

Thanks! What brand do you like for probiotics? We were doing yogurt most mornings which helped but lately she’s wanted dry things like toast.

@Bracken_Joy and anyone who owns them… how are the jan &jul rain suits? Would a kid overheat in one in the 20C/70F range? Or any other brands doing a size 6 or bigger? B1 really wants a rainsuit again this year

Personally, I think any rain suit is gonna overheat a kid at that temperature. At least my kid. Around that temperature is when I switched to them just getting their clothes wet and then change when they’re done. But we have one Jan and Jul rainsuit at this point, for the one year-old, so it definitely hasn’t been stress tested as much as the other ones. For the big kid our big win so far has been absolutely loving the Reima rain suspenders.

This is the one we’re currently using and having good results. But with the desire to get one extra specific strain this is what we’re using next.

IDK if it’s a pre-/post-/alternate-Miralax step, but I don’t try to muck around with diet anymore and go straight for magnesium. As needed works well for me because I tend to struggle with daily stuff more than occasional stuff, and works for Larva because it works (and far better than a daily dose of Miralax did).

She’s also old enough to tell me when her belly hurts or how many times she has or hasn’t done a poo, so she is able to request it.

We do the flora brand magnesium or the dulcolax chewable magnesium. I like that we can play with the dose a bit.

I think it depends on the day and activity at those temps! 20-21 is really cold to be wet in summer shade, but I’d never do rain boots. Just keep the core dry. Same with bike rides- dry core is vital. 20C in spring is balmy😂

Trying so hard to sell B1 on rainpants of any kind!

And THANK YOU. You have great gear advice and are the main one harder core than me with gear

I’m so happy I can help! It really is a serious area of fixation for me, because I grew up doing a ton of outdoor stuff with only super roughed up hand me down gear (I was always kid 6 or 7 to have it by the time it reached me). And I was like 9 feet tall and weighed like 12 pounds :joy:, so I was always fucking cold and miserable. One of my promises to myself going into parenting was that I would always make sure my kids were as comfortable as possible doing outdoor activities. Now, I may take that a little too far :joy: but I also ask a lot of them in terms of grit in the environments I expose them to, so it kind of feels like the least I can do for them.

I haven’t run across chewable magnesium before. Do you know the bottom age recommended for it?

Our package says age 4, but our Dr suggested it at age 2 for B2 to tolerance or a bit beyond (aka know where soupy poop starts). So we can do half a thing once a day as needed and if things are blocked enough do AM and PM halves which will cause soupy but not crampy
