Reporting back!! So good and lightning quick to reheat. Will be added to the rotation. Ziti loved it! Both are the Sukhis brand. We ate all of the chicken (well, will have after lunch today) but only half the rice and that was a good ratio; second rice pouch will be frozen
I love seeing this column spin up, but I also know so many folks on this forum could whoop this guys budget lol
Interesting! Definitely feels like a recession indicator lol. But I like that he’s saying this is $25 at a non-budget-type place and without buying in bulk, etc.
the comment about “*** No sneaky math.** If I need two cups of rice, I’m not going to tell you it costs $1 from a larger bag. The entire package has to go toward my $25 total.” is fair. it takes money and storage space to buy in bulk. But also, if you count all the spices, it’s really going to add up fast.
I’ve been thinking about whether to get a freezer for the basement to help handle overflow and take advantage of deals, but then I was considering the cost to buy the freezer and the electricity. I think for the two of us, it would take a while for the savings to catch up to the costs. The sales come regularly enough that we are usually not pushed into being off schedule.
There was a youtube video last week of a woman trying to clear out her storage lockers, and she had last year bought a lot of paper products right when the tariffs were announced because she’d been told that prices would go up and there might be shortages. And the thought of how much she had spent storing those things vs. the small amount she might have saved even if prices had doubled…
Speaking as someone with a giant freezer in the garage, having more freezer space definitely enables more… um, aspirational storage.
I find this less realistic/useful than doing the per cup cost (because I keep pantry staples around!), but also this sort of thing could be really helpful if you don’t usually cook.
I’m also crying because I remember when my budget for groceries for the week was $40 and I could barely buy spices because they were $10 a pop easy.
Yeah I could have qualified for food stamps at one point in my early 20s but I didn’t know. So many regrets
I thought I didn’t and wow. I definitely would have
Right??? No one told me and I didn’t think to check
I feel like the freezer is more about the convenience of not running out of stuff when tye weather is bad.
It’s Toronto, the weather won’t be bad for that that long, or if it is, we won’t have power, so the freezer is useless again.
That’s an argument for getting a bbq ![]()
I really wish someone had pointed out to me at that time that I could go to the bulk food store and buy small amounts of spices. (Also, I ate down my spices last year with all the moving, and I have been lax at refilling, I should fix that)
Jessica somebody in East coast Canada does extreme challenges where she only uses food she buys that week/month. Including bulk barn. And it is fun watching her build a pantry
Your tolerance for walking to the store in sub zero weather (Fahrenheit) is higher than mine!
But mines in the garage and I am 100% not worried about it thawing in January. We do have both a camping stove and a Kelley Kettle, though.
Grocery store roast chicken, baked potatoes, green beans
Alfredo pasta with chicken, white beans, and broccoli
Pizza
Nachos
Autumn tray bake thing
Teriyaki chicken
Irish stew
Bulk food stores are such a boon. We have a bulk spice shop here and I looooove it. All I had when I was younger was a single grocery store that sold the little jars. (Also it was really hard to get to the grocery store, it was over an hour on the bus. Food insecurity sucks.)
That sounds like it would be!
Minestrone with chickpeas?? Looks gr8
