I Will Teach You to Be Rich: Podcast Gossip and Discussion

These two should just make a monthly date budget, pay in proportional to income. Then before they go out he grabs the cash to pay. Blammo.

This is the content that I’m here for, even though I don’t listen to podcasts. I’m just here literally reading this thread from the beginning because this shit is amazing and hilarious and 100% good use of my nap time.

OMG is anyone else listening to the latest episode? It’s an interview with a male dating expert, go listen!!! It starts with them being very offended about men being expected to pay for things. Ramit even notes that they’re two men talking about gender stuff and that could be sensitive to ā€œsome peopleā€. Hahahahaha, I love it so much.

My favorite thing ever is men being mad about double standards, but only the like…2 or 3 that apply to them. I look forward to Ramit’s next break out episode on the unfair gendered standards men place on women while dating when it comes to: sex, appearance, body hair, listening, ambition, sacrifice, life coaching, housework, agreeableness, femininity, cheerleading, relationship standards, forgiveness, attractiveness, weight, sexual history, emotional needs, romantic needs, aging, childrearing, childbearing, salary, accomplishments, etc. I know I missed a few thousand things, but I’m sure Ramit is worried about those too. He’s definitely not just upset over paying on dates and like, opening car doors, lol. It’s definitely genuinely about equality, like it is for most men who want to split the bill.

Now we’re getting into other relationship advice, lol, IDK what this has to do with anything related to RICH LIFE. It’s so random.

I was listening to a podcast with a male host who’s usually pretty aware of things. He was interviewing another man, and audiences getting offended came up. And the male host asked the male guest to comment on whether something specific was offensive to women. Because the other guy had some special insight because he’s gay? And the gay dude was like no, I don’t think that’s offensive.

I don’t remember who this was, but it made me roll my eyes so hard.

I’m still way behind, but this really resonated with me. I have both been a server, and I have been waited on, and my family is all in the hospitality business. People who make this business their careers, usually really care about providing good service, especially in the high end arena. They take pride in it, and enjoy being able to provide seamless (or unnoticeable) service in a lot of cases. I don’t really understand the attitude of feeling uncomfortable about the workers, unless one actually does think they’re better than them, or specifically knows that they are being mistreated and continues to patronize the place.

ETA: Turns out I was NOT way behind! I just caught up, and an heading over to Rich and Regular. I am so happy reading podcast discussions - this is my favorite new thing ever.

This latest episode is bananas! I still listen instead of watching on YouTube but I love reading the YouTube comments section.

Yes it is! I listened while working and I told Ry that I want to go back and listen again this weekend when I can focus on it more because it seemed bonkers! I feel like I must have missed some of the explanations. I just remember her getting angry sounding and saying her children will never go to public schools. But they are living so far outside their means that they are racking up $10k in credit card debt per month, and they make $300k! It just doesn’t seem possible to me!

Ooooh, I totally want to read the comments on YouTube! I listen too and totally didn’t even think about that.

She says they’re middle class  I just, I can’t. I mean being on personal finance forums should have inured me to the shock of this mentality but somehow it hasn’t! Oh and her husband is going to get an inheritance soon? Like, family wealth counts if it’s eventually coming to you! I think you could even argue that having familial wealth period means you aren’t middle class. At least her husband said they were ā€œupper middle classā€, or as I like to call it IN THE TOP 2% OF THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.

I find it fascinating that we are able to accept that, as Americans, we are over-consumers, and that our over-consumption is a huge problem socially, environmentally, in terms of human rights, happiness, etc. But then at the same time, people who would generally agree with that (and even be highly critical of capitalism in general) simultaneously think their current spending, even when it’s more than most people make in a year, is middle class and that their own (and everyone else’s) standard of living should be even higher than it is now. Like, how does that work? I wish I could understand that aspect.

I also gasped when she explained that they paid off $150k in credit card debt and then 6 MONTHS later they were back $50k in cc debt. They spent $72k in 6 months, mostly on trips and like, major luxury stuff. They also owe $100k on car loans. I somehow missed the public school comment. They sold their last house for 1.5 million…like, I imagine they’re in a decent school district, lol.

I’m super curious about her business! She has her business expenses in with the family expenses, which makes no sense at all and makes me think it’s not a real business. And she has a lot of business expenses, which is another major red flag IMO. And said she lost a client recently and that was 50% of her business, which is like…business 101 of what you shouldn’t do. A single client should not be 50% of your business unless they are extremely easy to replace, and even then it’s not a great idea. And she just paid for a business coach, but can’t confidently state her annual income from the previous year. Like, wut?

Someone in the comments suggested she quit the business and homeschool to kill two birds with one stone. Not the worst idea IMO, especially if she’s so anti-public school.

@allhat this reminds me I want to have a discussion dedicated to class with you (and whoever else wants to join in). I have thoughts after reading through the true crime thread but no time just yet… maybe soon?

I felt breifly guilty because ive described us as ā€œupper middle classā€ and then remembered that $USD =/= AUD. And we’re below what they earn even if it were the same currency.
^and that is how one justifies ones own continued ridiculousness.

We just had A Majorly Spending Month and overspent our large income by 2k… Because we were buying the whole family sneakers and fancy lunchbox containers that should last them the next 5+ years. Overspending by 10k EVERY month on a larger salary is definitely a feat :anguished:

Ok, I always find it interesting when I come across people with relatively similar background to me who make drastically different life decisions. The wife in this couple says that growing up her family never had very much money and they didn’t go on trips or buy new clothes or eat out very often. Her parents divorced when she was 16 because of money issues. She says that because of the way she grew up, she wants to give her girls vacations and new clothes and eating out and it is very important to her to give them what she didn’t have so she completely ignores their money situation and just spends the money on credit cards without even trying to figure out if they can afford it or not.

I grew up very, very poor. Like stand in the freezing darkness at 5 am outside the county human services office to receive a backpack full of school supplies, level of poor. I did not get to go on vacations or eat out or get new clothes. I also want better for my daughters. But I saw how much stress my parents had when we were that poor and had lots of debt and I never want to live that way because of it. So, I hyper focus on my finances to make sure that we always have the money available to pay for something before we buy it. It’s like I am doing the exact opposite of her even though we say that we want the same outcome.

It’s just fascinating to me.

Ok, well, listening further Ramit just asked them how they compare themselves income wise to their parents and she said pretty comparable. So her family was at least middle class and still blew through all of their money.
