Picked up a Saskatoon for Deborah at BAAG today, she’ll swing past on Saturday to pick it up. Glad someone got it after Happy turned it down for good reason.
Couldn’t walk past a $30 Sharwill avo (75% discount) or three pots of Juneberries or two pots of discounted Pepino, with fruit! Picked up another bunch of discounted Daffodil pots too.
They’ve all blended into the mass of pots I already have…
The scientific names are different on the pots I have.
According to wikipedia the Saskatoon berry is Amelanchier alnifolia and Juneberry is Amelanchier lamarckii. The Saskatoon I have is tagged with that but the Juneberry I have is tagged with Amelanchier arborea which wikipedia says is a Downy serviceberry.
Lots of use of the term serviceberry and shadbush on the species list. Amelanchier - Wikipedia
I’m going to try some green mulch crops on our road reserve. The ground is so hard that it bent the spade Ponder used to dig a hole for the ground covers we planted today. I’m going to add some normal lupin mulch as well. Hopefully all that will bring the worms back.
As well as a bunch of other things in the garden on the weekend and today. White and Black Cherry Tomatoes, Scarlet Runner Beans, Poblanos, Cucamelons, Violets, American Elderberries, Red and Purple Chokeberries and Bilberries.
Ack! I need garden help! Something is munching on my Brussels sprout leaves and I don’t know what it is or how to protect them. Some sprouts have their leaves left, some have big chunks taken out, and some are completely bare. Maybe I should throw some netting over the planter?
I have lots of leftover tulle from sewing so I’ll throw that over the plants. I’m sad the leafless ones are goners but hopefully I’ll be able to save the rest
Got the sprouts covered up, watered everything a bit and discovered the buy nothing strawberry plant I planted that I thought had died is actually sprouting too! Hopefully that means next spring/summer we will get a few berries
I’ve tried 3 different sized pots for germination of my watermelon and cucumbers, as well as direction the ground. I finally have success with cucumbers in the largest pots (130mm) and one of the watermelon in the ground!
I’m so excited and slightly anxious to see how my garden grew whike we’ve been away. Only 4 more days. Did the new drip irrigation and tap timer work? Did the new tomato seedlings go gang busters? Do I have eleventy hundred zucchinis to harvest? Did bugs attack?
I want to spend lots of money on Birdies’ US website. I may be completely revamping my front yard plan for spring now, since I didn’t get infrastructure in place this fall.
