Oh no… Is that our fault??
It’s having seen all the nice looking metal curved containers around my neighbourhood, wondering where people got them, and then discovering these people must all be from Australia
It’s also major procrastination on the boring tasks like cleaning gutters and taking leaves… Much more fun to plan for next season!
So, yes, it’s all your faults
I suspect this is the case for much of my garden planning
I tried my first strasberry this morning. It was so sweet and juicy, I’m really glad the plants seem keen to send out runners so I can have even more sweet sweet berries.
I am obsessively checking on my watermelon and cucumber plants several times a day just to make sure nothing’s eaten them! Normal behaviour, right?
I let the veggie patch go to seed and have discovered coriander flowers might be some of my favourites. Delicate and lacy.
I think this is as many wicking beds as I can fit in using the Birdies 1.2m x 0.8m kits. It’d be 7.68m2 total bed space.
The spacing is tight in places; we will definitely measure a few times before committing to the full eight beds.
Just ordered two wicking beds so we can a) play with spacing in the real world, and b) get at least a few beds up and running as soon as we’ve prepped the space.
Okay, I think we’ve maybe settled on a plan:
This spacing only allows for six beds rather than eight, but I think it’s more realistic for the space available, it provides a larger path / space for Ewok to bring his dump trucks etc into to shift mulch around, and excitingly, Mr H is happy with the inclusion of an arch between garden beds which this spacing enables. I’m actually going to make sure there’s space for two arches, but we’ll start with one and see how we go.
I really enjoy seeing the different layouts - thank you for sharing!
Ooh lovely! You may also find yourself glad you left the extra space later. I am excited about your veggie patch!
It’s been such an interesting exercise for me!
It’s tough because I am having to fight the urge to maximise productive space, but I am trying to keep in mind that it’s a play space as well as a productive space, and that aesthetics matter too.
I have been having this problem too! I just want all garden beds in every nook and cranny, but I have to remember things like maneuvering space and my actual time capacity for planting and tending.
I think your six bed plan looks ace
Went to the Yarra Valley Plant Fair today with mum, dad and my two girls. Nothing of interest for the girls, no kids play area, no animal farm, not even the challenge to hunt down a beautiful yellow flower kept them from being a handful.
Mum and I on the other hand did our best to find interesting things. We walked away with a bunch of stuff.
I’ve picked up five different Pleiones; formosona alba, huckleberry, noosa, thelia and Tongariro thalia. A new blueberry variety, Darrow. A red perpetual basil to replace the one the caterpillars killed off.
On our way home we stopped at BAAG and the kids picked up a Purple Glitters azalea, some random petunias (no moon and stars sorry) and a Denver Gold Aquilegia.
Oh and one for the West Aussies to maybe follow. Her book came across my feed today, but I recall having seen her gram before and decided it wasn’t for me.
Are you going to grow stuff up the arches? I want to do that sometime soon. Not sure if it will be next year or year after.
Just discovered this thread!
Heading into winter here so not a whole lot going on. I did get my garlic planted a couple days ago. I have some more I’ll be planting at my second garden plot this weekend.
I am! But we’ll make sure the arches are pretty enough that they look good without it, too.
I love when I can recognize a fellow gardener By their front yard!
Caught a male and later a female blackbird pilfering ripe blueberries from my bushes today.
Off to buy a net tomorrow morning.
