December Challenge: Get it done GYSTember

Update:

Not much progress this week. Did well on creating and following a meal plan this week. Only “extra” grocery trip was just a decision to buy chips while I happened to be in Target filling my prescription.

Slight progress on dirt pile, but it isn’t done. No fence progress.

Expect that the next week will be mostly a wash because I’ll be visiting my parents.

Giving myself an extension on #5.

By some miracle #6 is done. Not only are gifts planned but ordered. Remind me to never take a long vacation between Thanksgiving and Christmas again.

#7. Is under way! We have batches of marshmallow ready to dip or assemble, and candied oranges drying. Backup is making more peanut brittle as well and maybe dipping them in chocolate? Does that sound fun or too much?

1a-c: Food tracking is going really well, 15/15 days. Meals, not snacks went off the rails a bit this week, 12/15 days. Walk everyday, eek, 10/15 days.

  1. Working on backup to laptop as soon as I finish this post. (ETA: and done!)
  2. Nope.
  3. Have done the parking permit and the adjustments with payroll. Basically waiting to hear if I will have health insurance in January before I can figure anything else out.
  4. Doing surprisingly well here!

Look at me adding checkmarks! Week 2 update:

:wavy_dash: 1. Log/File one year’s worth of financial papers (I usually do this in January, but it seemed appropriate for this month’s challenge) - won’t do this until near the end of the month.
:white_check_mark: 2. Get that $*&% IRA rollover done! - look at me, being all adult and stuff. Did my part, now just waiting to see if I did it early enough to count for this year.
:soon: 3. Minimum spend ($2500) on new CC, to include 2019 charitable giving Did the donations. Still need $750 on this card but I was working on the other one. Back to this card.
OK if I don’t finish this month.
:white_check_mark: 4. Spend on cc with an extra bonus this month ($1200). Done!
5.
:white_check_mark:a. Figure out how much capital gains harvesting I can do this year
:wavy_dash: b. and actually do it. No progress here yet.
:wavy_dash: 6. Cancel cable, which was a condition of me signing up for Hulu during the Black Friday/ Cyber Monday special. No progress here yet.
:wavy_dash: 7. Continue to track spending on holiday meal food and groceries for houseguests. No spending this week.

Next week: Capital gains? Spend more on rewards card.

Oh my

Accomplished the donations, made good progress on the PhD stuff (only have a tiny bit left, just need to power through for a few more minutes ha). I’ve been traveling the last week, so nothing else got done. BUT now I have time to knit all the things woooooooo

Apparently posting here is the only way I get things done- finally got my oil change scheduled! (this was seriously overdue lol)

A few more things to cross off:

  • Inventory freezers (whiteboard list) Generally okay here…not sure why I froze a carton of milk at some point back in 2017, but whatever, I’ll figure out something to do with it.
  • Inventory canned/dry food (whiteboard list) Way, way too many garbanzo beans. Pretty sure these all came from one of my renters. Will use them up somehow.
  • Baby shower gift (new item as of 12/7) In transit.

Leaving, in the next two (ish) weeks:

  • TwoOne house project from journal. Actually did a new house project rather than an existing one (install alarms on all basement windows) since during the last storm there was apparently someone out moving/removing window well covers over basement windows trying to get into my and several other nearby residences. Windows were locked/barred so no one actually got in, but the police recommended alarms anyway and it didn’t sound like a bad idea. However the cat vetoed the second project I had in mind since he likes the offset board on the platform bed where he can sit/lie six inches above the heating vent and stare at me, so I will pick something else and save that fix until spring.
  • Review all monthly subscriptions
  • Call about car insurance (and pay car insurance)
  • Look and see if there are any CCs worth picking up early next year

Cat, being disapproving about me fixing his seat:

Week 2 Update:

Still have not signed up for renter’s insurance. I am planning to do this next weekend.
Tracking for holiday present spending is going well. It’s pretty even between local/small businesses and larger corporations, but the rest of my spending will be local.

I love disapproving cat faces.

I also apparently do not get anything done without posting here.

Same. Now I’m wishing I’d posted some non-financial things in this challenge. Dishes, writing, decorating, writing the other thing. None of that is getting done.

Week 2 check in!

  • Went and got new replacement frames, spent the last $40 in my FSA and paid $12 OOP (this was just the actual follow through on what I had already planned)

  • Biked to work three days this week, with some other trips in there, it was 9 trips by bike and a total of 45 miles! Holy cow this is the most I’ve biked in one week in a long time I think… and it felt easy and natural. I’m trying not to get physically burnt out on biking but I love being on the bike again.

  • took a kitchen inventory, went grocery shopping, loosely meal planned based on what I’ve already been eating this month — easy, filling meals that I’m not stressing about too much

  • posted sublet stuff, but I actually just heard from the landlord that they don’t want to allow me to sublet, and they’re asking for 3 mo. rent at once to break the lease… so now I have to figure out how to swing that… probably just means using my student loan forbearance unfortunately (you have twelve months total for the ENTIRE loan, so the more I use now, I just have to hope I never hit a financial snag down the road) <—obviously this will happen lol… trying not to get too emotional over that

  • decided on the two novels I’m going to try to read between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day (Go Tell It on The Mountain by James Baldwin & The Box by Gunter Grass)

  • half an hour of yoga at home this week

  • put new (matching) bulbs in my light fixture

  • dyed my duvet cover red

  • ordered another Thred Up bag, put aside the things I want to put in it

  • hung my art museum postcards on my wall (I still have other art I need to decide where to put on the walls)

  • Have my kitchen mostly organized! I feel like things are where I need them to be to flow nicely when I’m cooking or doing any other general life things in there.

  • I have all of my moving boxes out of the apartment (this happened a while ago actually)

Here is what I did today:

  • went to grocery store

  • cleared off my desk so I can actually sit at it with my laptop

  • swept kitchen floor

  • swept and mopped main hallway floor

  • 2 loads of laundry (clothes and household cleaning towels)

  • pencilled in my planner with stuff happening this week

  • gave second job my upcoming availability

  • caught up w/ a friend and my sisters via text today

  • made a playlist

  • coffee maker and lunch for tomorrow both prepped

How is it December 15 already??

  • Update family binder (our “hit by a bus” binder)
  • Inventory deep freezer and canned goods
  • Plan travel and garden budgets for next year :ballot_box_with_check: No change, garden plans continue to percolate
  • Get Goodwill/BN pile out of the house! :ballot_box_with_check: It’s half gone. Need to do another round of BN
  • End of year charity donations - talk to mr krmit :white_check_mark: DONE
  • Look into making a will :white_check_mark: You know what? I didn’t say “make a will”, I said “look into making a will”, which I have, and there are some new to do’s related to it that are going to wait for my 2020 bingo card, apparently!
  • look at transfer options for a no-interest checking account that’s been kicking around for a year :ballot_box_with_check: Still need to close the account and transfer the money over into our checking.

Checking in with my progress -

Did well with items #3 and #4 of my to-dos by checking in with each of the relevant people and figuring out what needs to happen to move forward. Did a tiny bit of item #1 and nada on #2.

In my other items - I sold a medium thing taking up space, have multiple asks to get rid of a larger one on BN (will gift that tomorrow), figured out that no one wants 2 other bigger items from BN (to donation it goes next!), I got the necessary items to use a gifted-to-me-appliance AND I got a not-working appliance to work (yay!).

Still a lot left for the month…

I’ll probably edit when I get home for visibility’s sake. Progress/Completed:

Week One:

  • Purchased car.

Week Two:

  • Received check for partial reimbursement on new tires for said car, established sinking fund for maintenance.
  • Ongoing therapy, have set (and met) tangible goals and am implementing new coping methods for stress and communication with family.
  • Switched insurance companies, now have better and less expensive coverage for myself and my partner.
  • Appointment for sterilization consultation is this week, still preparing research materials to wow them into saying yes.
