Can anyone rec a source for KN95 masks? It’s just so hard to tell what’s a solid mask and what’s not from the Googles…
This surge is pretty fucked up. No food deliveries, no testing, no daycare. Feels like we’re basically giving up if we go to the grocery store, but, well, we have no option but to go to the store.
It is almost more stressful trying to not get it than just succumbing to the fact that we are gonna get it, just so we can get the food we need to eat.
It’s N95 and from Amazon, but these are what I have (recommended by the Wirecutter):
They look absolutely ridiculous, but I like them because they are more comfortable than most I’ve tried, and the pouch design means you can’t feel the mask move with every breath
Wow, I did a quick pubmed search and it was not helpful. I will ask spouse but can’t right at the moment because he’s busy trying to finalize a grant proposal to the NIH for his covid research. I’ll see if he can spare a moment later today to pull stuff because I know he’s looked into t.
Thank you! I pulled the trigger on them. Silly looking works for me lol.
I really appreciate it. I did a quick pubmed scan and ran into the same thing. And google is taking me to all the “how to convince your doctor to give you ivermectin” rabbit holes.
I am lazy and 3M was my pre pandemic source for n95.
crazy how accepting the duck bill life gets you an N95 for half that price tho LOL
You should lean into it and colour it orange somehow.
Lol I also like the duck bill ones! Quack quack
Here’s the official NIH take on it (unlikely to help, may not hurt, it hasn’t been studied rigorously enough to say for sure …very typical scientist caveats of not being willing to say anything for sure): https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/therapies/antiviral-therapy/ivermectin/
Here’s an easier to digest article that sums up similar info from multiple places: https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/ivermectin-why-potential-covid-treatment-isnt-recommended-use
There isn’t clear evidence for or against ivermectin:
(I see Sunflower beat me to posting this link.)
Here’s a randomized controlled trial showing no benefit of ivermectin, but it’s messy, fairly small, and in a younger group:
Your mother should take a treatment that has a clear benefit. The FDA-approved choices are the one monoclonal antibody that works against omicron, sotrovimab, or the newly approved Pfizer pill Paxlovid. Those might be near impossible to get right now. My next choice would be off-label use of remdesivir in someone high-risk with early covid. Recent study showed 87% reduction in hospitalization/death:
Remdesivir is an IV infusion. If she isn’t able to get a medical provider to do that, since use in someone non-hospitalized isn’t FDA-approved yet, my next choice would be fluvoxamine, a cheap anti-depressent pill that reduces hospitalization by ~30%, similar to the newly approved Merck pill (molnupiravir).
Note: I’m not actually treating covid patients right now, but I’m on provider email lists that send out current recommended therapeutics.
I do actually have some orange cheese print quilting fabric left i could make mask covers
You should. And then post photos here. Do it for me and my poor beleaguered self. I could use a laugh.
Thank you. I will investigate tomorrow why mom isn’t getting one of those treatments instead. She’s 67 and a cancer survivor with high blood pressure and prediabetes. I should imagine she would qualify as high risk, but Florida is such a shit show right now, who even knows.
Her doctor is prescribing ivermectin, I’m not sure FDA approval is top of his mind.
Well, I’ve had all these years of medical training, but except for April 2020 when it was all hands on deck here in NYC, I’ve mostly been keeper of the home during the pandemic. DH thinks his job is more important than mine …and it might be?
BTW, DH got a positive on rapid on the 23rd, so we cancelled our trip to see my parents in Florida, and he’s been isolating instead. Multiple PCRs have since come back positive for him. Even though he was breathing on us for at least 2 days before isolating, my kid & I have had multiple negative PCRs and rapids. All 3 of us are asymptomatic, knock on wood.
I think 1M+ people in NYC must be infected with omicron right now …
Very glad that you all are doing ok! Gosh, it’s so hard to figure out how spread is happening to those of my family and friends who don’t really go anywhere and still got sick. And yet people sharing homes don’t get sick at all!
These jalapeno chips taste strongly of dirt, a hint of mold and a hit if acid and warmth. Fuck
