Covid-19 discussion

MIL finally got her first shot! (I say “finally” because she is in the same healthcare AND eligibility group as my parents, and they have both already completed their series.) FIL is not eligible yet.

I think the big reason they chose to do this in Oregon was that they wanted to bring kids back to school and the only way to do that was to prioritize educators for a few weeks to get them all through regardless of age and push back age-related covid vaccines. We just didn’t have enough vaccines to do both at once.

People living and working in group senior facilties, requiring in-home heath aid, and those that work healthcare were first in line before educators.

It seems like numbers-wise, Oregon’s strategy has worked to lower deaths and cases even though it was controversial. It just means we’re still in a much higher age bracket right now than a lot of the country, but possibly re-opening schools sooner.

Today’s (yesterday’s?) NYT email was good. Below is an excerpt that’s good news:

I’m crying. Which might be super awkward cause I’m supposed to be on my game night so I hope I don’t need to chime in soon.

I might have a vaccine by my birthday. I might have a vaccine by my birthday.

My birthday is July 7th and it might be like…normalish by my birthday!?

I was just thinking this, mine’s Aug. 1 and it is, uh, a milestone. That I’d planned on spending out of the country, which is probably not possible, but, maybe I could celebrate it somewhere other than my apartment?

Oh shit, buying plane tickets for fall just became a whole new ballgame!

Florida’s governor is dangling the idea that maybe in April they’ll make vaccines available to everyone. (I wonder how much of this is motivated by them not wanting to bother with the extra work of having tiers and how much is wanting to one-up Biden.)

I’m definitely spending part of my morning stalking the Publix, CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart pages. The problem is that they want you to make a log in (except Publix) and I don’t want to make a log in for all of them but I probably will. I at least want to walk through what all pages of information they ask for and see how far out they’re booking but I’m not going to finalize an appointment for any of them yet. This seems reasonable?

I’m also trying to think of if I know anyone who would need help getting an appointment but everyone I can think of who hasn’t already gotten one is someone who sits in front of a computer all day and is tech-savvy enough to navigate it themselves.

Edit: Publix makes you sort of wait for a button to appear (probably to keep their system from getting overwhelmed, which is a good move) but once the button showed up and I could navigate through the booking process it offered me a 3/14 spot. That’s great, I was thinking it’d be a bit further out than that for some reason. That also gives me an idea of how far in advance I need to start stalking their site for real once my eligibility date rolls around, whenever that’ll be (within the next two months!!!)

There’s one page asking for my name, address, and contact info, the next page was medical questions like if I’ve ever had an adverse reaction to a vaccine, am I prone to seizures, etc. I closed the window at that point because it seemed like the next page was a confirmation of the appointment. Overall it seems like the same process for getting a flu shot and takes about as much time as filling out that paperwork.

The problem with vaccines available to everyone is, I’m pretty sure that’s just eligibility to get the vaccine. Will they actually be able to get distribution to have the vaccines available?

Something like 85% of my state is eligible now. There are no appointments to be found.

I saw that they were going to make it legal for dentists and veterinarians and med students to administer vaccine? Maybe that’ll help?

Part of me worries that Chicago is still going to get shafted because of the whole separate-supply thing. If he says vaccines are being provided to the states - that’s not us. We don’t get any of the IL supply.
Who on earth came up with that?!

I’m nervous enough about getting the vaccine at a CVS instead of a hospital due to the rare adverse reactions…

I think I’d pick a vet over a med student as far as “can handle an emergency”. “If she was a horse, what would I do?”

Hopefully if it is a federal plan, it takes into account city residents too. My coworker in Chicago is trying to find a vaccine in the next 3 weeks because her OB said not to get it late in pregnancy, but she’s not in one of the targeted zipcodes now, so it’s just impossible.

Yeah… she would be 1b+ if she didn’t live in the city. Or if she could’ve gotten an appointment during the initial “Chicago residents only” wave, before they restricted it to zip code.

Does she know about the Chicago Vaccine Hunters FB group? I’m on it, lots of great info there, though not helpful to me personally since I don’t qualify for 1b+. She might need to drive somewhere more rural, apparently some don’t make you prove residency.

I mean, I am all for the poorest and hardest-hit communities being prioritized. Especially at a federal site, it wouldn’t be a good look to shove POC living in poverty aside in favor of people who are more privileged. It’s hard though to feel as though I’m even further down the list because I live in a comparatively richer (but still very crowded) neighborhood.

Massachusetts has been saying since the beginning that in April everyone will be eligible. I don’t really believe it since we are still at the top half of Phase 2. If they just decide to open it up to everyone in April regardless of how many people from prior phases have gotten the vaccine I imagine it’s going to become a full time job trying to get an appointment and so many people are already having a hard time getting an appointment. It seems like it’s just to make the state (or country) look good and wont actually mean that the vaccine is getting to people quicker. Tough if supply is supposed to start overtaking demand then it will be really easy to get an appointment! So all that to say who really knows what’s going to happen!

I’m stalking CVS, Walgreens, & Walmart for an appointment for my mom, all without making accounts on any of them. Maybe this varies by region…weird. I got my own appointment (first shot tomorrow, yay!) on CVS and I did have to enter my info to make the appointment, but I didn’t have to create an account.
