Covid-19 discussion

Yup but most of them aren’t the 10th largest employer in their county :woman_shrugging:t2:

This is true. I actually just went to the Focus on the Family website to see their stance on masking, and it looks like they are pro-mask which honestly surprises me.

I know several giant mega churches in COS that are openly anti mask, including one in my bffs neighborhood that does not require masks, has never, and has run a coffee shop through the whole pandemic that does not require masks.

Well, it’s happened (in a good way!). Husband is vaccinated. He’s working from his clinic that’s also a vaccine site today and there’s a snowstorm so the vaccine people were talking employee walk ins. We have a photo for the family history books and everything.

Counting this as a small victory in the dumpster fire. We’re keeping the news from my parents so they don’t do stupid shit when they visit and since he could still shed the virus if he gets it. But at least it’s something. Hoping he doesn’t react to it but I guess we will wait and see

For those who want an update on the science around covid-19 and weight, Christy Harrison has an update in this episode’s Ask Food Psych section (outline and links on the page, full transcript via email). The link I shared from her previously was from back in Aug.

I hope you can turn his bigotry into a great marketing opportunity. I had pretty much stopped listening to him but was kind of liking John Delony - I think I;ll unsubscribe to the lot now though.

Oof. My friend who lost his dad to covid is getting on a plane to fly cross country for the funeral.
He has MANY health issues that impact his immune system.
I mean, I get why. But, :frowning:

Hopeful you can convince them to wear an N95 mask, if possible. I will say the planes and airports are some of the “safest” enclosed spaces out there right now. Sending them love.

Another extended family member died from COVID today. I barely knew them so it didn’t affect me personally, just providing support to the closer family members, but seriously. This disease sucks. 3 people on one side of my family in the past 3 months is really a lot.

Oof, that is a lot. Did your other family member figure out the pension issue?

We did as much as we could before her husband (my uncle) died. we were not able to get him retired before he passed. She will still qualify for death benefits and pension survivor benefits, he still doesn’t have a death certificate though so she’s still not getting it or anything else like the 401K yet. We had her pull as much cash as she could without alerting the bank to his death out of their joint acct, and put it in her sole account.

We also thought she would have medical insurance for one year as a surviving spouse, but actually it was only dental/vision through the union she gets for a year. She panicked and signed up for a scam plan, can’t get out of it, but we managed to get her enrolled in an exchange plan.

I am so sorry. That’s really sad.

That’s awful.

Is there a way to contact the state insurance board to get her out of the scam plan? Or a legislature to help you?

Apparently, Trump was right.
If you don’t test, covid goes away.

(It’s some graph mistake. Today’s cases were 1,974. The state has 376 ICU beds available though! No word on if there are doctors/nurses available to care for the people in those beds. )

Worth looking into, thanks for the idea. It might be too much for her to handle right now, she is very stressed about these kinds of things, and quite embarrassed about getting the wrong plan. I’ll mention it to another aunt on that side of the country though to get a gauge.

Regarding people who have been vaccinated still contracting and spreading COVID - this is not unusual nor alarming. That’s the 5% of the 95% efficacy post-second-dose.

We can say the same thing about the influenza vaccine - but in that case on average about half of people who get the vaccine can still contract and spread the flu.

Vaccination is just part of the strategy for disease mitigation/eradication.

Thanks for putting this into words that make sense. The point I was going after was “it’s not going to be all perfect right after people get vaccinated, so keep those masks handy”. Your explanation is much clearer!

This is the kind of stuff I want to be more widely spread. My dad keeps talking about how people are going to “need” to go out without masks since they’ve been vaccinated but don’t want to get dirty looks for not masking and we keep being like “hmmm maybe everyone should still mask for awhile, Dad. Maybe the shot isn’t everything and is just a piece of this whole strategy and also btw you won’t be getting the vaccine for months so perhaps let’s cross this bridge when we come to it”

Sigh.

How did she sign up for the scam plan, directly through the carrier or through a 3rd party?

When Boyfriend signed up for a scam plan it was 3rd party, some site that came up when he googled Obamacare? He called them back with me on speaker and got more verbal abuse than I have ever experienced in a customer service situation in my life. Later he called the carrier directly and they cancelled it right away.

Worth a try though I imagine she may not be able to deal with it right now.

They denied it left right and center, but we knew this is what they were on about  lovely.
