Covid-19 discussion

Oh wait, I also have a heartwarming coronavirus thing! My hometown (very rural Appalachia) just had school canceled for 2 weeks, and food insecurity is a big thing there for kids when school is out. One restaurant said that 2-4pm every weekday that school is closed their kids menu is free for all kids and then challenged other local restaurants to do the same, and I’ve seen more post that they’re joining in. Might not be the best for not spreading illness but also means kids aren’t going hungry. Nice to see people doing what they can to help at the very least.

One discord server I’m in, everyone is saying it’s all overexaggerated and you shouldn’t worry. People in ukraine and us. I’m so disappointed because that’s exactly the kind of attitude that is gonna perpetuate it

Whole Foods was pretty well stocked! We did get the last gluten-free oatmeal, though

Our Prime Minister is an idiot. Gatherings of more than 500 people are banned from Monday. He is still planning to attend a rugby league match on Saturday. Wot?

And

If it’s a good idea from Monday…it’s probably a good idea now.

Pretty sure he can’t go now if he was in meetings with Peter Dutton on Tuesday?

Is it really truely horrible that my first reaction to Peter Dutton being infected was glee? Logically I know it’s awful for anyone to be infected and not a good community outcome, also not a great thing to have the virus spending through our politicians, but also it’s Peter Dutton.

(For non-Australians - Peter Dutton is a terrible person who has been responsible for the horrific treatment of vulnerable people by the Australian government, amongst other things)

Ha I laughed at the news. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer bloke…

Shit’s getting real: someone on my floor at work is a suspected case, sent off for testing today. I was informed and told I could work from home until we know it’s safe (which I think is more like “safe” than actually safe; even if this person tests negative we should all be working from home already anyway but no-one is willing to authorise that).

I am filled with impotent rage that my whole work area hasn’t been notified. I was only notified and offered WFH because I happened to tell a certain boss recently about my autoimmune disorder, so he knew I had medical issues. Otherwise I would not have been told. This is just so, so wrong.

Outrageous. Our work has ended the two day WFH split workforce trial and while they assess we’re all going to work Monday. Ummm wot? That may change over the weekend as it inevitably gets worse.

I’m sorry your workplace is being too complacent. It is extremely frustrating. They need to tell everyone.

Mr Pancakes has been reminding his office at every opportunity that they are all disease vectors. That their jobs are to fly around the country. They are still flying people around the country. They have clients now begging them to stop and telling them if they don’t they will not allow people on site anymore. There is pretty much not a chance that no one in his office is infected. A bunch have known exposure but the advice they have received is to pretend everything is fine unless they develop symptoms :woman_shrugging:

Money first apparently. Always.

I’m this close to taking Duckling out of daycare on Tuesday. The only thing giving me pause is, uh, I have a psych appointment that day. We’re probably still going to have cleaners turn up on Monday. Should we? I DON’T KNOW.

But I think I’ve decided I’m working from home except for my one class, and if my supervisor actually responds to my emails. But my supervisors are going to get some emails next week so hopefully I don’t have to really see them much in person?

Thinking on convincing Ponder to also WFH.

Lots of dance orgs are canceling events. Unfortunately I know people are organizing private events because they think it’s all bs.

@LadyDuck anyone who can wfh, should. What would be the downside for Ponder?

At least my boss wants us to all WFH as much as we can, she’s as worried as we are. But the higher ups are not that concerned yet.

Also, Scomo is a joke.

Correct.

Yep, this is the official advice re our workplace exposure. I feel there is a significant gap between the official advice and the morally and ethically correct position.

I don’t know, but as of a couple hours ago I don’t have to wonder. He’s WFH as of Monday and his work has told the entire office to WFH as of Tuesday (earlier, if they’ve already set up at home). We’re just still feeling our way around this. Every decision has so many little decisions and decision fatigue is real.

I feel this so hard.

All the schools here are closed now. I haven’t heard anything about feeding any of the low income children, hopefully that happens.

I hear you. I figured if there were specific issues in the way, we could help you work out solutions, but no need now!

Question for the group: should I put these things on hold?

  1. Current therapy sessions (will not cost me anything to cancel)
  2. Dentist visit - fairly urgent for me, but I don’t even know when they would have an opening
  3. Starting with a new therapist for EMDR
  4. One on one hikes and walks, if we keep our distance and nobody takes public transit

I’d personally go forward with all of those type activities if I wasn’t sick or had risk factors.
