Covid-19 discussion

How much of the school decision do you think is related to programs in and after school? I know here that’s part of the discussion; reluctance to close until there are more cases because a relatively high number of kids in my district don’t eat outside of school, and reluctance to force parents to take time off work.

I think food is definitely part of it, maybe @noitsbecky has more insight

From a teacher friend of mine, education companies offering free subscriptions due to school closures:

I sent @aaronpk to stock up on groceries and this is Trader Joe’s:

That’s what they all look like here too, apparently.

Jewel was pretty well stocked though. Probably isn’t any more.

The mayor just announced that Chicago Public Schools will stay open. Likely because a) that’s the only way some kids get to eat, at school and b) lots of parents can’t take time off work to be with their kids so the fear is that a lot of young kids would be left home alone. Also c) a lot of kids don’t have Internet access at home so they can’t do online learning.

This sort of belongs in Tiny Complaints, but it’s Covid-19 specific, so…

I probably need to ration my food, at least a little bit (will make way less money this month and want to limit exposure by not going to the mostly out-of-stock grocery store - I got groceries last Friday).
But also my anxiety is like “friend, why don’t we eat pistachios nervously at 70mph?

I was curious about this so I clicked but unfortunately the link is not working. Maybe it’s a private document?

My company decided not to let us work from home yet after saying we could this morning. So now it’s “up in the air” but we are bringing laptops home in case. I just don’t see why not be extra cautious and stop crowing all of these people into a building together.

I had a panic moment today about getting really sick, so I went to Walgreens on my way home, and shockingly they were fully stocked on all manner of cold/flu/cough/sinus stuff…so I bought all the things. They were out of toilet paper, which I only heard about because of an irate woman running screaming out of the store because she was so pissed there was not any toilet paper to buy.

Those must be super shitty breadcrumbs, lol.

I think it’s pretty funny (in a sad way) it’s JUST CRUMBS LEFT.

How symbolic @anomalily

Several school districts in my area are closed for the foreseeable future, as are libraries and other public spaces, but the nearest school district has announced they’ll have school lunch pick up areas for people depending on the food. Good on them.

And our PMs wife is officially diagnosed…

My brother cancelled his wedding abroad and I am so, so relieved. My parents are high risk, my mom very. All of us kids have asthma. I was very stressed.

Holy FUCK. We didn’t go today, but ours hasn’t looked that bad yet, at least. I’m sure it was pretty bad today though.

I would like to join in the group chat for those staying at home, which hopefully places of employment will sign off on me doing too.

Damn. I went to a small grocery store today while everyone was at work, to minimize social contact, and they were fully stocked. I guess it’s small and expensive enough that nobody wants to stock up there.

I did my regular weekly shop and the difference between Lidl and Wegmans was stark. I got everything but bleach at Lidl (we only have a little teeny jug and it was almost empty from the quarterly diaper stripping) the only empty shelf there was apparently the bleach.

I then went to Wegmans thinking I’d grab bleach and maybe stock up on some big bags of frozen fruit and some frozen veggies that we eat a lot of which are cheaper in the giant bags. Our Lidl only carries the smaller bags anyway so I figured why not. I was surprised to see so many shelves empty at 9:30 on a Thursday morning. Usually when I go I only run into 3 other moms with little ones strapped to them like me. Today every open checkout was 2-3 deep with full carts.

So I guess bargain grocery for the win? They’re a 5 minute drive from each other so at least it’s not inconvenient.
