That’s only if you have the plus subscription. This is what I see when I press the key
Granted I have a lot of gems, so I shouldn’t worry about it, lol
Last time I was on Duolingo (granted, about a year) the paying with gems things was only on mobile but not desktop… (as in, you didn’t ever have to use gems for anything on the desktop, which made them just accumulate endlessly…) I don’t know if that is still true? I do have to get back on there…Actually I take that back, you could use some to get a few special things, but you would never need hundreds. I had so many when I stopped.)
I don’t have the plus subscription. I use mine mostly on desktop so mine doesn’t look like yours.
I have the same issue - finished German, then they added all the levels, now I’m reviewing dumb stuff I way know. What I will say is I’m using the early lessons to rack up the points I need to move up in the leagues, since it requires a lot of points each week
@Economista If you do it on desktop you don’t need to pay in gems! you can take the test without gems on desktop.
@CalBal They haven’t quite equalized the gems usage on desktop/mobile but in some ways it got better. I complained about the exchange rate when gems were first introduced and they actually fixed it. (i.e. I had TONS - like 40K lingots and it turned into almost no gems (1K?) given that it took 350 gems to restore hearts for a single day.
I took a lot of German in HS and college, and I WANT to do German on duolingo to get back to semi-fluency, but I absolutely can’t do German and Spanish at the same time, lol. I tried, and tested in to a decently high level, but it’s just a shitshow trying to do both, lol.
Spanish is brand new for me, so it’s hard, especially going from a germanic language to a romance language. It is way more useful in Colorado than German, though, and I’d like to be able to speak Spanish to my kids to help teach them while their brains are all plastic
Yup I had c1 fluency in german (business fluent) and it is useless in oregon. I am trying not to lose it lest I move back to Germany so I am keeping it up, but I also do Arabic and Russian On Duolingo and moving better three alphabets is actually easier for me than between french (Which I took 6 years of in school) and German because the alphabets are different . There is a reason i have a lot more points in German than Arabic though
Week 1 check-in:
So far I’ve been eating groceries I purchased in Sept. Turns out my freezer has ~20 lbs of proteins I had ordered on sale and forgot about! I should eat these before they suffer from being in the fridge too long. My next grocery order is going to be mostly veggies and dairy.
So far I have enjoyed a restaurant meal of samosas ($19). It’s only day 3, and I know I tend to struggle near the end of the month, so the plan is to stick to cheap but satisfying items when we really want to order out.
I would like to jump in as well if possible.
Working from office min. 1 day / week
Budgets for:
Groceries € 250
This includes also paper stuff etc. bought at the supermarket
Eating out € 50
This includes also ready to eat food, such as a piece of cake from the small and extremely good bakery across the street
Splurges € 50
Everything from kitchen gadgets to books to music to …
Clothes
This is not a fixed amount, I need two pullover/sweater. My home office is not as warm as my office and I can not use my usual blouses. As I am required to turn on the camera often I need appropriate cloth. Lets see what I can find
Week 1
Officedays: 1/1
Groceries: €14 / €250 went to the farmers market for vegs and eggs
Eating out: €8 / €50 Had cake on Friday and went to the offices canteen on Thursday
Splurges: €24,49 / €50 Bought a discounted Le Creuset mug and downloaded the new Queen live album
Week 1 Check-in:
Grocery: $323.7 / $450
Restaurants: $40.56 / $175
As anticipated, the grocery budget was heavily weighted to the beginning of the month, but we did a big Costco run that was supposed to be the only one for the month, and we had Baby E’s birthday party so we provided tacos, chips, salsa, cake and ice cream to 12 additional people. I’m not sure if I should try to pull “party” expenses out from the normal grocery budget or not.
I forgot 3 big items while we were at Costco - Bread, Tortilla Chips, and Cheese. The cheese is a big one for Baby E and we are almost out, and it is much cheaper at Costco. The bread we buy is much cheaper there too and I’m not sure if I have the energy to make homemade bread instead. So I likely need to go back and get at least those 3 items.
Week 1 Check-In:
I’ve been working on YNAB this past week each day. Now that we started a new month I was excited to pay my 1st of the month bills using the budget as a way to remind me each bill that needed to be paid this week.
What I learned this week: I’m finding that I needed a few more categories for expenses like “Halloween Gifts/Candy” and “Upcoming Medical CoPays”.
The goal for this upcoming week: I have a second job that will receive aa paycheck from this upcoming week. I’m hoping that any extra money I get from it I want to put towards a new trash can, groceries, household goods, and an emergency fund.
<3 Rue
I have a category for gifts and one for medical expenses (I include healthcare premiums, copays, dental visits, prescriptions, etc all in “medical”).
Over the years of $$ tracking I’ve added categories as necessary to reduce the number of recurring things that end up in “miscellany” (or “flotsam” as anomalily calls it).
Ah! Good points! I’m hoping after a year I’ll at least have a category for most things. I do really like that aspect of YNAB, so many nuances!

Gearing up to be a zero spend weekend for me. Woot!
Two person household here! Little late to signing up, but here is our goal:
Stick to our $800 grocery budget. We have been chronically overspending this category for the last six months (buy nice food cuz pandemic makes us sad!).
Weekend will be zero spend, but stupid desktop shenanigans will result in unknown sum spent tomorrow to be able to work and recover data.
Week One:
Placed all Unemployment payments into my “Just For Fun” category.
Did overspend in other areas, balanced with other categories; left “Just For Fun” alone.
Reconciled my spending this morning (Monday here), so that’s a good start.
