Got a to-go coffee this morning, after taking Landlady-friend to a medical appt. Definitely a want.
Getting something I want is okay, as long as the necessity is evaluated.

Spending on our room so far: $0/$300. So far I have moved some art, swapped a lamp with one that was in a discard pile, and moved a narrower table next to my side of the bed. I put my former bedside lamp in our living room, and absolutely love it! I’ve been researching some ceiling light fixtures, but so far have not found “the one”. I might try reversing the fan blades to see if the lighter color is less objectionable. I’m also thinking of painting the base of the ceiling fan white so it’s less of a contrast with the ceiling. Clearly I’m wavering I’m getting rid of the fan!
I have however thought more seriously about how to improve the bunny’s room. The room is around 9 by 9 and has no closet. We have nowhere out of sight to store her supplies. I’m wondering if I’d get more satisfaction out of spending the money on more attractive storage solutions for her room?
Desktop dilemma resolved with less money than could have been.
Amazon adapter*: $5.49
Used VGA monitor from local shop**: $40.00
VGA to DVI-D adaptor from local shop***: $5.00
Tax: $3.15
<Total: $53.64>
*This is pure wasted money as I ordered it late Sunday for Tuesday pm delivery in case nothing was available locally (likely), but then something was. But if I’d waited, the earliest possible delivery would have been Wednesday night, which would have ruined his Thursday morning class in addition to the Tuesday morning one.
** This is white! and has a Windows Vista sticker on it! and yet he gave us a one-year warranty on the thing! I love local businesses. ETA: we bought a monitor because the spare we had has some sort of power issue. It will come on sometimes (usually?) but won’t go off unless you unplug it.
***Best I can tell, identical to the one that hasn’t arrived from Amazon yet.
Ugh, I already have to wave the magic wand because I finally caved and ordered a pair of 25lb dumbbells today. The strength training club I belong to sent an email celebrating its 1 year anniversary that included a list of places dumbbells have been in stock lately. I’ve put it off for months and even tried just filling a bag with almost 50 lbs of rocks, which works for front squats and just walking around, but not much else. Anyway, I think what I’m probably going to do is cover this with money from my racing and fitness sinking fund and leave my miscellaneous budget as is. On the one hand, I wasn’t planning to dip into that fund this month; on the other hand, I’m going to be doing deadlifts in my house far more than I’ll be signing up for races in the coming months!
I am stoked for you! I finally got a kettlebell after waiting for 5.5 months last month and I was like “I WILL MOVE WHATEVER PART OF THE BUDGET AROUND I NEED TO!”
okay so here’s what I’ve got - a $170 budget for the month with $42.50 spent per week. The categories of spending I have are:
-skincare
-takeout
-skool supplies
-digital stationery
we’ll just let them all have equal merit, so each week estimate $10 on each category.
SO FAR: I have spent $23 on digital stationery, so it’s going pretty badly.
HOWEVER, there’s also the NOT-REAL-MONEY budget. I have about $40 in Amazon gift cards because I am the most active member of my school’s study app (?!), and I have $46 from selling stuff on Mercari (simultaneously an incredibly fulfilling and frustrating experience).
I will update this on Saturday if I remember. Boo!
Story of my pandemic life.
First week spend $16 on eating out and $11 on groceries. Nothing else yet. Will post my budget when not stuck under a baby.
Minor dilemma. I went on a decluttering tear and sold a bunch of stuff on eBay - $120 in profit after shipping & fees. Can I apply it to one of my budget categories or is that cheating? (If it makes a difference, some of it is directly related to that category and some is not.)
I think you should share pictures of the bunny’s room so we can help you brainstorm. Lots and lots of pictures of bunny in her room.
Do you feel like it is cheating? It’s up to you.
Budget/ ethics crisis. I want cheap fabric to make some curtains for our gazebo for summer:
https://www.spotlightstores.com/sold-by-the-metre/plain-top-pop-112-cm-poplin-fabric/BP80397219-cream
But there’s no way that’s ethical at all. But. Cheap. Ugh.
I want to stress-order sushi, but there is so much of October left!
Can you get your hands on ingredients for California rolls? (Veg rolls and smoked salmon are also easy to come by…I add scallion to the smoked salmon ones)
Hint: don’t do the inside out rolling, it’s needlessly difficult. Maybe don’t do rolling at all and just do sushi tacos.
…dammit, now I want sushi…and we’re trying to eat down our fridge before 1wk vacay.
Since high people people have walked past me and said “dammit, now I want to eat [insert a yummy thing here]” because I’m always rambling about food cravings
In all seriousness, I think I just always need to have easy yummy food prepped in the freezer and ready to heat up, then I default to eating those first unless I really really really really want to eat out. When I’m hungry I’m haaaangry and impatient!
We went and got paint this evening and walked past the No Longer a Gas Station BBQ Joint (the landlord sold the land under the gas station for condos, so they moved the BBQ and snack counter to a building a few doors down) and I wanted brisket poutine, and now I want sushi.
How did you first week go? Reminder that Friday is check in day! Check in on your first week to get your first Budgetober Beastie badge!
Okay, not great.
Tracking spending and talking it through with Mr H is going well. We’re also doing well on groceries (186.26 / 800) and I haven’t spent anything on the garden yet. Takeaway and restaurants will be the tricky part: we’ve already spent quite a lot (297.92 / 500).
Still sitting at $11/$400 for groceries but will need go stock up this weekend. $16 for eating out (at this stage coming from a “fun” sinking fund that was from before covid and newborn times and hasn’t been touched as much lately). At this stage budget mostly stays the same as before baby times but with less savings.
