Benedict is always dtf
beginning of episode 6
Anthony and Edwina are to be married the next day! How will it all end? Will he abandon her at the altar?
Also, subplot of the queen only hosting the wedding so that she can smoke out Lady Whistledown. Very clever, Your Majesty.
Whoa, Edwina’s speech post-wedding: mic drop
I haven’t read this yet but heard an interview with the author - Edit, okay now I read it, it wasn’t that long. The interview is the first part of three most recent NPR It’s Been a Minute.
To very much boil it down, it’s critical of Bridgerton for being color blind (everyone is treated as white! Yay progress!) instead of color conscious (colonialism sucked for India, where the Shawarma are from. Consent and the lack thereof in history with regards to Black people’s bodies.)
So, for my own (white, privileged) perspective, I do consider this fantasy in par with dragons and magic, or intergalactic space travel and teleporters. In season one especially I was like oh, we’re just collectively not going to question this parallel Earth too much for the sake of a smutty romp, got it. Now that there’s a skin off being talked about going back to when the queen and Lady Danbury were young, though, it feels different. Then I read this quote from the article above and yikes.
“Season two’s addition of the Sharma family, meanwhile, illustrates the show’s desire to be coy about the place of Britain and colonization in a storyline that could have handled — even benefited — from some context. Instead, showrunners went so far as to hire a professor of history who could offer the writers a way to glaze over the East India Company’s complicated, violent, exploitative relationship between Britain and parts of India.”
So, uh, I guess we’ll see where things go.
What do y’all think?
I think they’re digging themselves a hole that they may need to dig out of quicksmart with season 3/ if they go ahead with the spinoff. I thought the spinoff idea was one of those “writing prompt” memes and didn’t realise they were actually planning to go ahead with it. Hiring someone to deliberately gloss over is actually kind of a huge thing? I think you’re right about the difference between “this is a fantasy place” and “this is alternate reality Britain” - there’s only so far you can take the alternate reality because some of the history has to be presented, either clearly how it’s different or admit the problems that existed.
Your autocorrect is hilarious
In the first season there’s also a conversation about being cautious about something to keep standing. Basically implying that yes, the colourblindness is fictitious and fragile. And I actually think that more correctly represents the situation in England today. Their racial climate and racism as I experience it there is very different from the US and Canada. And I understand that Australia is different again. Who would have known?
Like blatant racism from the masses is super common. And in the media. The football player for Liverpool (I think, could be Everton or Man U or city idk) just keeps playing during racist chants that should get the entire stadium kicked out. The chancellor and his billionaire wife who dodge taxes just had their story flip to it being a racist story about letting one of them in politics.
But you don’t have people having round tables and dialogues- a little bit in academia now. But it’s just different. And I think that bridgerton reflects that by doing the exact same kind of glossing over.
I think Bridgerton is a (silly) romance and I just ignore any of the race ridiculousness. My take is: yay for the actors and actresses who had always loved historical romances but now have the opportunity to be a part of them. If it’s believable, it can’t be the fluff that it is.
I laughed too!!
Actually yes from what I understand the flooding over glossing over thing probably is accurate to present day Britain, I’d love to hear the views of a Brit.
Australians (general, as a population?) are very good at “pretend multicultural but actually racist to everyone” in Australia… White people who have been here for a few generations are top of the pile. Like me. My kids will have a lot of privilege.
episode 4
OMG Ponder called it! Lord Featherington WAS trying to marry the Cowpers for their money. What we didn’t expect was that Lady Featherington would so spectacularly fuck it up. She’s ineffective at everything else. Oh no. Poor Penelope. I am intensely wondering what she’ll do, her income depends on having access to the Ton and their gossip, but also I doubt it’s anywhere near enough money to pay for even her lifestyle, let alone her family. I am enjoying this storyline more than Kate and Anthony because I’m worried for Edwina.
Kate and Anthony needed this episode to make the transition from enemies to Oh Shit. I’m irritated that Kate did not at all fees up to her sister, and her sister is so nice and I don’t want to see her hurt! Daphne how could you possibly think anything less than “I will propose to Kate, and here is my plan to make it OK with Edwina” would be your brother being sensible? Of course he’s going to do the stupid thing, because you tried the same thing last season! Fair enough he is her older sibling by several years and a couple of siblings.
Agree on the mum fail from Lady Bridgerton and Eloise, Mum should have spoken to E later but also Mum should have thought through the dude she tried to set up E with better. Mum couldn’t do anything in the moment because she was The Hostess.
Your feelings around Kate/Edwina are part of why I’m so grumpy that they changed the story so much. In the books Edwina is happy for Kate because she meets someone else at the Bridgerton house party that she likes more! It’s like the writers thought there wasn’t enough drama or something so they had to add in a love triangle between the sisters.
I just started watching.
DID THEY JUST DO AN ORCHESTRAL RENDITION FOR THANK U, NEXT FOR THE BALL???
I love the soundtrack
NOW THERYRE DOING GIRL LIKE YOU???
I CANT
THIS IS AMAZING
They have their own spotify playlist for the show if you want to listen to all these covers
So, on a normal day in our house if we listen to anything other than kids music it is orchestra renditions of pop music, like piano guys, Dallas string quartet, etc. I highly recommend searching them out if you like it! The more upbeat and poppy ones are my favorite.
THIS GOT VERY SEXY
I WAS NOT PREPARED
I heard shonda asked “what’s the max amount of sexy time scenes we can have?” They answered something like 10 or 15 mins and she said “sweet that’s gonna be one scene” hahaha
