So cool! I can see their individual feathers and the coloring is magnificent.

Went to this pretty tiny lake as it’s a shorter walk for Keeley. She doesn’t like the heat

But we saw bluebirds and heard a woodpecker or two, and saw quite a few hooded merganser, and a pair of cooper hawks!

Explicit content - two red-shouldered hawks. (Sadly photos a bit soft through the window, though MvR stepped outside and got the last photo.)

I swear this wasn’t intentional. The one was sitting quietly on that branch, and I was taking photos, and then this occurred.

cleaning up old files and came across this one, which isn’t technically great, but amuses me

Adorable comic I discovered while surfing the Fediverse (I’m on Hachyderm.io)

Not always bird related but a lot of them are. And they play with lots of different species, and if you’re into birding, you can probably identify them!

False knees are great, I’ve followed for a long time!

long tailed duck

courting woodpeckers in the snow. Merlin suggested red bellied by sound, but photos it is IDing as hairy or downy. And since they were courting, the sound was different than usual.

Left one makes me think Hairy… the Downy beak is tiny!

downy vs hairy

(I’ve yet to see a hairy!)

yes, the beak does read hairy, and they were much bigger than a typical downy

I remember how to tell them apart by saying to myself “dainty downy or huge hairy”. The Hairy is certainly no Pileated Woodpecker in size, but really is distinctly bigger than the downy.

Nesting kestrel. I really miss my doubler.

Also, hands still recovering from the chill.

look at this cute little pied billed grebe that Merlin tells me is uncommon in these parts

Merlin also let us know that the bird in the distance with the weird sounds that the other birds were unhappy with was a peregrine. no photo, sorry

oddly, nobody was complaining about this one
