I also have a lunette and love it!
Reviving this very old thread. Earlier this year my Lunette was getting very smelly and no amount of boiling or hydrogen peroxide was helping. I think the silicone was wearing out and it was end of life. So I was looking into buying another and it turns out that the Lunette company was going out of business! So I stocked up on several for a discount. Well, the new one is much firmer and it pops open better but it’s also much less comfortable and makes me a little sore. I’m not a fan.
I just discovered menstrual discs and apparently they self-empty!!! You just bear down like you’re trying to poop and the blood comes out but the disc stays intact. You still want to take it out every night to rinse off because old blood smells really bad but I think this is a game changer for being out and about without getting blood all over your hand in a public bathroom! According to a review there’s less leakage, too.
I just received a pack of disposable Flex brand ones to try out before I get a reusable one. If it goes well I’ll take these to India and give them to my SIL who needs something very easy to manage (we discussed cups and they’re not for her). I just read the instructions and will try them out soon, but I’m really hopeful that this works for me!!
Very happy with my disc! I definitely still get leakage but the capacity is great and I was having weird terrible discomfort with the cup after baby 3. I have the cheap Amazon two pack recommended by @Economista.
I’ve been really curious about those but have an IUD so I’ve heard they’re not really compatible.
I tried a disc for my last period and it leaked all the time, not sure if it’s anatomy incompatibility or practice.
I have used them for many years both with and without IUDs and haven’t had any trouble at all.
I inserted the disc and it was very easy compared to a cup. I’m not sure if I did it right but I guess we’ll see!
I think it’s much easier too. I have noticed though that I have to make sure my cervix is actually inside of the disc area. Mine is in an abnormal spot so sometimes I have to shift it around a bit. I have also had mine empty itself while I’m sitting on the toilet and thought it was just too full and over-flowing. I didn’t realize it was a feature and not a bug!
Since I have such a heavy period I always wear period underwear with it just as a backup. Sometimes it does leak a little but that’s usually because I should have emptied it. It actually holds a lot more than any of the cups I have tried so it’s better for me in that regard.
I’m a longtime cup user but I’m very curious about the disc.I heard that it has a better capacity.
Summary
I also heard that you can also have sex with the disc and it won’t be “in the way”
Summary
I tested this out on a not super heavy day and I can confirm that it works well and there wasn’t any mess!
You can also do the reverse and fill them with sperm and pop it in!
What brand do you use? Taking recommendations!
So far I think I haven’t leaked (I’m on Day 3 of period, trying for first time today) so I think I must have put it in right.
Success! I think I’m never going to use my cup again and am going to buy a reusable disc.
I’m in India on the 3rd day of my period and so far I’m a HUGE fan of the Flex Reusable Disc. If I had known all the benefits I would have changed to a disc years ago. I noticed yesterday that there’s a little notch where you can fold it which could explain why it was so difficult to get in the right place at first. Basically it’s a firmer rim and a very soft and thin silicone “cup” in the middle.
First of all, the capacity is twice that of the Lunette. And it auto-dumps if I bear down while on the toilet! So no need to manually empty it during the day and I just need to remove it in the morning and evening when I’m at home to rinse it off (otherwise I’ve learned that old blood gets very gross and stinky). It’s much lower profile to insert than the cup and comfortable once inserted properly and does not press on my bladder or block my urethra. And it hasn’t leaked a single drop. With the cup it always leaked and I’d have to wear a backup pad. And I hear that you can have sex with it in, which I haven’t tried yet
I bought my Flex Reusable Disc new (damaged box) from eBay for cheap and now I don’t know what to do with my two Lunettes. The big one was only used for a few months and I found it much firmer than my old one, and the smaller one was only used once. They’ve been boiled for a good while. If anyone in the U.S. isn’t squicked out and would like them, send me a message and I’ll mail them to you after I get home!
That is just the recommendation I need to push me to try it! I looked into discs a few years back but the auto dump feature freaked me out and I was afraid to try. Is Flex the brand name of what you got?
Yes, the Flex Reusable Disc!
If you want a physical explanation: I think the disc is sitting over your cervix when it’s correctly positioned. When you bear down, your cervix is likely pressing down into the cup cavity so the contents get squeezed out. So it’s not a weird or scary thing
Thanks! I read a review or two that said it happened when people didn’t mean to do it, so that was the freaky part to me. I’m sure it’s just a practice thing.
I’d be terrified - besring down can come with a cough, laugh or sneeze (although I hope only an extreme cough should affect something like that?) but also my period cramps are sometimes strong enough to push out a baby, so it would be very bad for me.
I haven’t had that happen and I pee when I sneeze. (Are those related? No idea, they just seem to go together?) YMMV of course, but that was a concern for me as well and I haven’t experienced it. I got to where I couldn’t wear the cup at all because it was so uncomfortable but the disc I can tolerate.
