2020 BINGO -- A choose-your-own-goals challenge

Did I miss you being a Classicist or something adjacent?

I’d say I’m a pseudo-classicist  One of my undergrad majors was Ancient Greek, then I studied and translated parts of some 17th-century super wonky Latin treatises for my dissertation. But my Classicist training is honestly pretty scattered and I’ve forgotten a lot haha

I’m also late to the party but ready to commit to anything that makes 2020 feel like it’s not a total wash. Excited to hold myself accountable and feel more productive after the last three months of nebulous chaos! Better late than never

Random update:

We took Puglet for a bike ride on the minuteman bike trail a couple weeks ago. He loved it! We thought for sure he would fall asleep as it was about a 2.5 hour trip but no he wanted to look at everything and everyone we passed.

I also got the news from my boss that I can basially make my own schedule and work 4 longer days a week and take 1 day off and that would be fine. So I crossed off negotiate more vacation days off.

If I can just hike a 4k footer or hold crow pose for a minute I will get BINGO!

SO CLOSE.

I’m finally making real progress on a few goals. Hoping to also get a bingo at some point!

Making good progress! Although I’m a little annoyed at my past self for distributing the harder items so well :joy:

Notes:
-Activism webinar: did a multi-day anti-racism course
-Although not complete yet, I made progress in the EF savings, reading, and cooking goals
-The only goal I have actively tried to do and failed so far is the “No reddit for a week” lolololol

Reddit is the bane of my productivity.

Me: I’ll just take a 5 minute break from work
Reddit: oh hai
Me: shit where did that hour go
Reddit: cackles gleefully

Do you have StayFocused or anything like it on your computer? That may be useful if you’re really trying to stay off Reddit. You can nuke it for a whole week if you need to.

Oh yeah, I’ll probably end up doing something like that- thanks for the reminder! I’m realizing that honestly most of the time it’s not so much an issue during work as during the evening, when my brain is tired and wants to look at puppies. So I need to nuke it and make sure I have fluffy replacements readily available (like a fun book, knitting, etc).

June update.

I am close to my running goal, did 5km in 30 minutes and 6 seconds last week and ran 9.4km without stopping. So hopefully should get those in July.

I am falling behind (well below 50% in a few) and some probably wont happen due to Covid, but I am leaving them there for now.

June looks sadly like May (which looked sadly like April)…lots of things in progress, but nothing quite complete. And the plants that I thought would let me get to plant-alive-for-three-months status got clobbered by hail, so I’ll have to hope the peppers or eggplant or something survives the next month. Also still need to come up with a replacement for my planned city trip, and possibly the new mountain biking trail one as well because every trail I’ve tried recently has been packed and trying to pass someone on a singletrack while staying six feet apart is something of a nonstarter (not to mention that mountain bikers yield to everyone, and it’s not really biking if I have to walk my bike for miles). Oh, well, so it goes.

I’ve re-written my bingo card:

B I N G O
Estimate of home sale price from realtor Take an art class Camp 3 times Visit Wildlife center Forest volunteer day
Lead a hike Make a 2021 calendar from photos Go XC skiing Give birthday cards to 3 people Meditate every day for a month
Host a gathering at my house Eat & empty chest freezer FREE Spend <$250 on groceries in a month Take yoga anatomy course
Complete Beg Yoga class notebook Volunteer 30-50 hours at shelter (24 so far)* Submit pic of Lil Bug to cat calendar contest Teach an outdoor yoga class Try 4 new vegetarian recipes
Contribute to IRA Make mozzarella from scratch Stand Up Paddle board Paint baseboards Go on a date

There are still a couple of things on here that could be affected by Covid.

  • Volunteer at the shelter. Case levels are low here. I’m close to meeting the minimum I set. If I don’t feel it is safe, or the shelter ends up canceling volunteer shifts for the rest of the year, I will accept whatever I’ve already done here.
  • Leading a hike and hosting a gathering at my house - both outdoors, small events.
  • Contribute to IRA. I’ve already made the contribution. I need to EARN enough that I don’t have to rescind part of it. I do very little paid work these days, and that dropped to zero for a while during Covid.
  • Eat and empty chest freezer. I’d still like to get this empty enough to defrost though I’m wondering if that’s really a good idea with the summer surge. Haven’t dropped this one yet.
  • I’ve volunteered for one trail day and am on the waitlist for another event. Maybe one of them will happen?

In June (or was it May?) I completed the birthday card challenge. Yeah my progress stalled for a while there.

I finished my cousin’s afghan - that’s three squares complete! I’m hoping I can finish a few more soon, too. I’m making progress on most of them, even if many are not yet finished.

I’ve knocked off a couple more items (savings > student loans, and getting a Pap smear )

Need to think about changing a couple of these though - Despite my best efforts, it’s going to be pretty hard to have a birthday this year (as it was in March and the planned party got…interrupted)
