(If I let it go too long, he’ll come glare at me through my office window while I’m working.)

I was considering getting a hummingbird feeder at some point and this is only encouraging me.

I also just put out an ask in my Buy Nothing group for one. I’d love for some birds to visit for my cats to watch. (And for me to watch.)

I saw momma robin feeding baby robins. Their nest is on the gutter protected by the overhang of our garage. They or a new generation return to the same nest there each spring. My husband refers to them as “our birds”. He may be as protective of them as momma bird is.

If you guys get a hummingbird feeder, don’t buy the nectar with the red dye. The dyes are actually very bad for the birds. Just mix one part sugar to four parts water, and keep any extra in the fridge until you putIt out for them. Oh, and make sure the feeder stays clean, specially when it gets hot, because it can ferment

So as someone who lives in the land of 6-8 month summers, how frequently would it need to be cleaned?

I live in the land of 6 -7 month summers, and keep the level fairly low so I don’t have to dump out much nectar. I’ll try to wash it out and put in new nectar every two days. This is the first year in several that I’ve kept a feeder, because the last three summers, I’ve been off in grad school city for three or four days at a time. That was too long to leave one out here.

By the way, all of my feeders were pretty sorry shape, with broken off perches or missing attachments. Walmart brought me this one with my last grocery order.

The birds have discovered my feeder and now quite a few are coming. The bird feeder is high enough that Lil Bug can’t reach it, and thanks to the bottom half of a milk carton, seems to be squirrel proof (for now). The squirrels are eating what the birds spill. Every so often Lil Bug chases a squirrel, who’s fast enough that she has no chance of catching him. She’s almost 12, a poor hunter and not exactly subtle, and I swear the squirrel is taunting her. Once the squirrel is safely out of harm’s way the he tells the her what he thinks and she listens with rapt attention. The wild ones are eating well, Lil Bug and I are entertained and she is getting a bit of exercise in between naps.

Bobbin is sitting in H’s lap playing with her little Xbox controller while he plays switch. She’s wrapped in a fuzzy blanket because she’s a bit sleepy and H made a contented sigh and she did the same, it was overwhelmingly sweet. I’m glad that at least through all this he is getting quality time with her.
