What’s important in a standing desk? Is it worth going up to a non-ikea standing desk?
I would spend a little money on one. I got a somewhat budget one ($299 on Amazon) and it’s wobbly. Not so much that it is unusable, but I notice it and it annoys me. You want to have supports between the legs to prevent that wobble. Also I really love that mine is electric and I can just push a button vs. the crank ones, or manual raise ones. My work bought everyone really nice Varidesk ones recently, and I declined because I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of building it/selling mine, but man…I really regret it! They are SO nice. The difference between the stability and really everything about it is so much better. I think there is probably a happy medium though between that kind of price, and the cheapest Amazon one.
I always plug this one when the standing desk conversation comes up, but Mr. Meer got what is technically a workbench from Husky to use as his standing desk. Since it’s meant to be a work bench it’s very sturdy. The height adjusts with a hand crank. Probably more expensive than the Ikea option, though, I haven’t looked.
ooo, it’s a pretty close match! That’s super interesting
I ended up getting it!! The price was right-- and there’s some appeal to having a workbench for a desk
I’m into this!
A coworker did this as well and absolutely loves it.
for anyone else coming with the same question, I’ll say that I’ve had an electric desk from Uplift and a cheaper desk that was a handle and then you pulled it up, and I would not get that kind unless it was pneumatic (like the Airlift desk from Steelcase) because it was really hard to lift. I’d think electric and crank ones would both be fine though.
Ah… Any computer people have thoughts on the latest Apple Mac Pro? @brute @aaronpk ? I’ve been told we’re getting one and the base model is so much but I don’t know if any upgrades might be worthwhile?
The tower? (Just making sure) The base model tower doesn’t seem to have a whole lot more than the 14" upgraded laptop at 1/2 the price. What are y’all going to use it for?
Do you mean the new Macbook Pro laptop? Or the Mac Pro tower?
I decided to not get the new Macbook Pro because I got the $999 base model Macbook Air in June and it’s been surprisingly good for everything I need it for. If I were to get a Macbook Pro I’d get the processor upgrade and bump the ram to 32 or maybe even 64gb, and SSD at least 512gb.
I mean the laptop. Because I am not the intended audience and merely double-checking the purchase it didn’t even occur to me that the tower was called the same thing. Whoops.
I need to be able to weigh my dog, who must be monitored so that her insulin dose is correct:
Details
Does anyone have a bathroom scale that they really like? Like maybe even the kind that syncs to like a FitBit? But most important thing is accuracy, maybe down to 0.2 lb or 0.1 lb?
WHY do I need such a thing? It’s actually so I can weigh my dog, whose weight must be closely monitored for her insulin dose to be correct. (She’s medium sized and won’t fit on, like, a baby scale. Weighing together with a human (holding) is an alternative, I can’t take her to a vet every week.) My old scale broke after my house move.
But I might in future get a FitBit (for me, not for her, lol) because I love data, so a fancier one might be cool. But reviews can be misleading and I sometimes find them hard to trust. (And there are so many bad reviews out there as well.)
Any recs? Just hide the details though, since not everyone wants to be bombarded with this kind of info. TY!

I HADN’T EVEN THOUGHT OF THAT!! Excellent idea…
Farm girl to the rescue lol best accuracy to “fighting uncooperative little fuckers” ratio you can get.
She’s actually pretty calm when I pick her up, but also 30lbs of dead weight makes you stand quite funny…
Fair point, better body mechanics too!
Black Friday cometh.
I may have just broken our mixer so if anyone sees good deals on that, let me know. Also @LadyDuck has me thinking of art supplies for kids and books.
Is anyone else hunting for anything in particular?
Target has a really good kitchen aid pro deal this year, the Deals Guy mentioned it as one of his top picks lol.
