Your Very Own Personal Shopper

Y’all are with software developers in my mind. But fair enough. Also I don’t consider Linux a valid option for a school computer  (extracurricular, maybe).

Same here, from a civil/ Enviro eng perspective you’re all software people. I have several programs that will only run on windows. My dad’s electrical and he uses windows too - also working for gov’t basically means windows here afaik, there is no choice, but military i would have no idea about.

Quick clarification–your father is also a software person? If so never mind, lumping it in as an interesting reference point. If not…

Rant for something I run into a lot and I'm assuming is not the case here, but still worth a mention

…this is the most common sort of misogyny I run into at work, where despite having dual degree across electrical and computer engineering, as a woman I’m assumed to be ‘a software person’ and treated as though I have no business in a lab/running tools/doing hardware design even when I’m quite literally the project lead, yet a man with the exact same degree is somehow a ‘real’ engineer (and I’ve gotten this from both men and women which is why I asked here). The actual software developers also aren’t likely to appreciate having every female electrical engineer (or every electrical engineer in general) lumped in with them since it’s a very different field and skillset, but that’s probably less relevant atm.

Sorry to hit a nerve and I really didn’t mean anything by it.

I don’t actually work with many CEs/EEs is part of the problem. And I haven’t asked my college friends what they prefer. Just coincidentally haven’t visited each other much or seen their work devices.

Oh no it was the “computer engineering” that made me assume software, I did not actually know/ remember your gender. Because here “computer science” is a software degree and that is what my husband does and he has an engineering degree (mechanical… no his actual job doesnt match his degree!) so i assumed computer engineering was another turn of phrase for software engineer, but it sounds like its what I would call mechatronics or control systems engineering. My dad does energy supply so quite different from what you do!

And my dad and I are both windows preferred and my husband much prefers Mac, so I assumed since you preferred Mac that fit the profile of husband!

Not a Chromebook expert - this PC Mag list recommends Acer and Lenovo… which happen to be my top brands for gaming laptops, so I’d lean that way as well.

Overall I think this is situational but… from what I can only see from the outside looking in, data scientists tend to use the best tools for the job (e.g. python, whatever data notebook thingies run on, etc.) and those things tend to just “work better” on *nix based systems (Linux and OS X). If you are stuck on Windows, you end up installing WSL (Linux on Windows) anyway so you can do your job.

Lots of organizations, especially big ones, often push Windows on everyone, and the engineers can make it work, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best tool or a preference. When I have a choice… I choose beefy high-powered Windows laptops… that I can dual-purpose for Windows PC gaming. But then depending on the job, I often end up using WSL to get real work done.

If I have a point here, I think it’s that @galliver sounds much better informed about this. I’ve mostly worked for very small companies, and tended to be on Windows. Now I’m at a larger gov’t space so of course they force crappy Intel-based Windows laptops on everyone (and I hate it!)

People on here tend to think of me as computer guy mostly because I talk too much

does anyone here love their sheets? I’m in desperate need of a new set, but I’m having trouble finding something that I want/like.

what I’m looking for:

  • 100% cotton (or linen/linen blend - no synthetics, no bamboo)
  • queen size
  • 1 fitted, 1 flat, 2-4 pillowcase covers
  • ideally solid color, will make exceptions for simple repeating patterns

I don’t buy from Amazon anymore and haven’t found what I want in Walmart or Target.

It’s been a while but I really liked the Charter Club cotton sheet sets (Macy’s brand). You can get customer returns for much less on eBay, especially if you bid at auction. Here’s an example of a Buy It Now listing.

My ultimate fave is my Piubelle cotton sheets that I got from Marshall’s or Home Goods. They are so, so nice!! But I didn’t see any online there, you can only buy them from the resale sites for $$.

LL Bean percale are the gold standard, but they are a bit pricey.

I just ordered my second set of these sheets from Target. They are online only and they haven’t arrived yet, so I don’t know if the second set will be as good as my first set but the listing appears identical. The set I am replacing lasted a little over 3 years and suddenly developed a hole in the fitted sheet. For me it was important to be 100% cotton and percale.

I’ve been more or less tracking how long sheets last and 3 years is typical for me, so that is no better or worse than others but I really like the way my original set of these feel. Interestingly, the price I just paid was identical to the price I paid for the same set 3 years ago.

All my sheets are from Ikea.

90% of my sheets are from IKEA and there is a noticeable difference in the cheapest cotton and the midrange cotton so now I buy the midrange. They now have some synthetic blends so read carefully (2 of my kids’ comforter covers are from the same line visually but one had the unpleasant surprise of being partly plastic because only one label was read)

+1 LL Bean, they are my favorite sheets

If you have a TJ Maxx/Marshalls/etc, they sometimes have Ralph Lauren percale sheets that have also held up very well for me, and are much cheaper than LL Bean. (Other brands there are very hit or miss on the fiber content front)

We have great sheets from llbean on our bed and some from The Company Store on our guest bed that are less expensive but still very nice.

I think you have to check fiber content carefully now because soooo many sheets are horrible microfiber.

My favorites are LLBean, too. Unsurprisingly I buy my sheets at the thrift store, but that’s a long term approach. I try to stay a set or two ahead of what I’m currently using.

Does anyone have a source on old school aluminum frame, nylon webbing (cris-cross woven) lawn chairs? Both the regular chairs and the loungers. This is what I grew up with and are very nostalgic. I have a couple of Adirondack chairs that I was going to restore, but I have to admit to myself that they are actually falling apart (rotting) and they are extremely heavy besides, so I need to look into replacements. I don’t want new plastic ones, I think I’d prefer the old school. (No plastic webbing though, those heat up in the sun and are awful.) I’d also prefer not to use Amazon. Direct from company best, but big box store will be acceptable if there aren’t other options.

Anyone have any leads?

No leads but my grandma had those and I would help her put new webbing on them. She let me choose the colors, it was great.

Look at the colors of this one! googling “Webbed lawn chairs” brought some up.

Ooooh and you know our OG chairs were orange+ something else (yellow? I can’t remember). That is a nice color combo…
