You know me so well

I think we have a purex and sunlight one too. Definitely several cold water unscented options.

So… You have tried the regular (not simple) Tide F&G that isn’t labeled for cold water and you had problems? I was under the impression that tide had switched everything to a cold water compatible formula so they just don’t label it anymore, but I could be wrong…

Yeah, exactly. Noticeable difference in my cold wash items, and the stuff I wash on hot was still getting clean.

Guess I’m wrong  Good to know.

Or my washing machine is cursed! Multiple options.

I know this is more work but… we had some leftover dishwasher pods and I have stopped using pods due to environmental concerns and also because apparently they don’t work as well in the dishwasher because no powder goes in the prerinse area. So I spent 15 minutes cutting up the leftover pods and emptying the contents back into the bag and then squished them into powder.

I don’t know if you have the time for this, but if you’re going into so much trouble to source the right product, maybe this is the best option?

Wow, I’m also surprised by the laundry results. I had listened to a podcast a couple years ago that was all about the science of laundry and everyone was saying that all modern detergents are designed to be used in cold water (and in fact, one of the lessons of the podcast is that it is very environmentally destructive to wash in anything but cold water and that you should be washing as much in cold water as possible.)

I only use free and clear and only wash in cold and don’t have issues so I’m sorry to hear that you are. That sounds very frustrating!

One more thought about the laundry situation: Is it possible your clothes aren’t getting cleaned because your washing machine needs to be cleaned? I’ve heard of that causing issues. There are videos on YouTube about how to clean the washer.

I wish I could recommend Clorox 2 sport, which was an unscented enzyme laundry additive that did wonders for my Thinx (which are about the stankiest cold wash laundry I’ve ever had…) Buuut I think they discontinued it :sob:. I’ve been using Oxi Clean stain and odor but it is not unscented…

ETA on a related note, the research I did on detergents the last couple times I bought said that the yellow Tide Simple is lacking in the enzyme cleaners, that’s the simple part. You really need to find the white one for cold wash…

I love your commitment! I don’t have time, unfortunately. I wanted to see if there was another easy answer, but I am already spending more time on laundry than I have.

It’s also environmentally destructive to wash more often because your clothes never really get clean, though :woman_shrugging:

The environmental and washing priorities are a bit at odds here. It’s pretty well established that warmer water DOES do a better job cleaning, especially with fatty greasy dirt (we don’t run dishwashers with cold water for a reason! Also if you look for stain removal advice, one of the steps for many stains is wash on hot.). But warm/hot water does also bleed pigments, and obviously takes more energy.

I’m not against the “wash more on cold” messaging but I am against the
“its just as good” messaging. It’s just not true. I do think for most clothes it’s good enough, especially outside layers and dark colors. I wash nice clothes on cold. But I do wash socks, undies, and t shirts (the next to body items) on warm for smell and sheets and towels on hot for allergy reasons.

Yep, I have the white one. Oh well!

But the message I got from the podcast I listened to- which had guests who work on developing laundry detergents-- was that modern detergents are designed to get stuff clean in cold water.

And in my experience, cold water wash does remove all smells from my laundry. Obviously, circumstances may vary, so I’m not saying everyone would have the same results-- I mean that’s why the question was being asked in the first place.

I do wash sheets in hot for allergy reasons. But everything else in cold and I don’t have any issues with stains or smells. And I am very sensitive to smells.

I’ve had so many laundry issues that I read two books on laundry science, and one said that and one said they are formulated so differently that you shouldn’t use cold water detergent at all. Hahahhahha

Do you know anyone who is going to be in Cincinnati this spring? I’ll be there in April, and am happy to import loads of laundry detergent for you!

If only, thank you so much for offering!

I’m picking at the semantics between “works in cold water” and “works equally well in cold water”. I think it’s true that it works! But when it’s not working, sometimes cranking up the temp helps. So much also depends on the washer, the clothes, the wearing habits.

Also entirely possible I am superstitious and have placebo effect with warm wash. But it works for me…

Sorry, I guess not. I could have sworn it used to say that, but I just checked the jug and it doesn’t. I wash most things on cold and it’s fine but I also have a speed queen top loader which uses lots of water, so I didn’t notice if it changed. My personal belief is that some of those high efficiency front loader machines are not up to the task of cleaning actually dirty laundry. That doesn’t help your problem though. Sorry again!
