Tiny Victories

Sewed the button back on my short (because its laundry day and i can’t procrastinate anymore). Especially pleased with the reinforcing ribbon on the inside.

Today my new cardiologist called me on the phone herself because I put a message in asking for a COVID vaccine prescription, and she called my usual pharmacy and they don’t do shots. Not her office, she personally called me, and she’s calling in the prescription to a CVS near work.

I scored a half bushel (25 pounds) of Roma tomatoes for $13 CAD. Normally here they are $1.99/pound!

We are in the mountains for 36 hours! The weather is lovely and the cabin we are renting is seriously perfect for my kid - huge fenced yard with legit cool play things, picture books and toys all over the house, even a cute step stool in the bathroom to wash hands!

TC: both spouse and I have more work to do than I thought for taking vacation days.

This sounds road trip worthy, you should share the listing!

There are some downsides (only a small window AC in one of the bedrooms and its pretty warm here still). And it’s in a tiny mountain town just north of Los Angeles without much to do, not even good hiking trails unless you drive 20-30 minutes.

But it’s perfect for my family on this particular trip and the property manager has been really responsive so I’m happy to share the listing with anyone in a private message!

I figured out a way to compare recipes we like in multiple books, so I can tweak away and put it in ONE place. Right now i have notes penciled in dozens (?) of cookbooks on 100s of recipes. This should give me a way to come up with OUR standard recipe. Right now i have cornbread and cobbler, both things I intend to make this week…

The cobbler was good. We ate 1/2 of it this morning. The other 1/2 is in the freezer. I have the remaining peaches to deal with today.

Also today, we have window people coming tomorrow, so I need a non-fussy meal. My vote is for chili & cornbread. The chili can go into the instant pot and will be just done. The cornbread is slightly more work, but it can be done today too. Then tomorrow it’s just heat and eat.

My bank sent me a sign up for 3.75% interest for new deposits until nov 30th. Good thing my severance will be deposited there so I can transfer and make some $$ and then start the new account bonus game with cash.

Finished being stabbed for my trip (Chickungunya and finally Covid vaccines, fingers crossed that reactions stay mild), and my eyes are finally un-dilating from the optometrist…one more appointment (dentist) and 6 more malaria pills to pick up the week before I leave since the insurance company only covers a certain number/month, and I should be good to go on the medical side.

Madagascar. It’s been in the works for a long time (like 7ish years), but things finally lined up and I’m leaving at the end of this month…~2 wks hiking and then 1 wk diving, although I still have to do the test pack to make sure everything fits in my suitcase and is under the weight limit (and then take it all back out and permethrin the heck out of the outer-layer clothes).

That sounds amazing! I wish you a great trip!

The NGO I work for lost 40% of our funding when the US pulled foreign aid last year, but apparently they’ve been successful enough at finding other funding that they’re now promising no staffing cuts at least through the end of 2026 AND we’re getting a bonus of an extra month’s salary which I thought for sure wouldn’t be happening this year

DH and I were talking about filters, water supply, etc. partly because the septic is being pumped today. We used to go through a tremendous amount of water filters, we have a lot of iron salts in our water.

Then he started buying “descaling” filters for the water heater and the line/filter doesn’t need to be cleaned or changed every 3-6 months, more like every year or two. Works!
