Tiny Victories

I sewed a button back on. This normally wouldn’t be a victory, but at first I totally mangled it, reminding me that it is in fact a skill, and just because I’ve known how to do this a long time doesn’t diminish that. It’s a skill and I was out of practice but it came back to me. TV.

While frantically searching under the kitchen sink for the steel wool for my Tiny Complaint, I found the following:

  • our missing flashlight
  • a full unopened box of trash bags
  • half a roll of paper towels
  • 1 more clean unused dish sponge than I thought we had.

a coworker expressed that she needed a few food items, and they happened to be things that I stocked up on a little too much for Covid winter that I am not using as fast as I expected. I was able to make a bag of them for her and she will come get them today!

I had lunch in between meetings and it was white chili and it was amazing.

I thought my copay for therapy was $45, but turns out it’s only $25! I can’t believe I have a therapist I like and it’s only $25. :sob:

Sometimes supporting local businesses means getting an enormous sushi platter and going to town on it until all three of you are groaning and rubbing your distended bellies.

This has been my go-to excuse for Way Too Much Indian food. I literally would be in tears if it shut down.

Getting pepperoni rolls and calzones from the local italian place down the street is just me being a good citizen.

My sister has grown up to be a decent host and we’re having Christmas Breakfast at her place this year. I am delighted and planning on showering her with praise.

A friend texted me while he was super high asking high level linguistics questions. I love every ounce of this.

I’m almost done with the Silmarillion. So close. Were JT still alive, I’d write him a letter asking for fewer sentences that were more names than verbs, adjectives, non-proper nouns etc. I don’t know that to do when there’s 3 names in a row with nothing in between.

But I’m almost done and this later part is more narrative and I like it.

Praise you. This is a feat I have tried many times and never accomplished. It reminded me too much of when my parents made me read Exodus in the Bible as a kid. I just can’t follow. And I have read the entire Tolkein dictionary cover to cover multiple times.

Was it good??

It was! If I ever try to read it again, I’m going to make maps and family trees and a chronological mapping of who did what, where, and when. I usually read for 20-30 minutes in bed, but this one I have to do during the day or I can’t concentrate enough to follow!

Props for getting through Exodus. My folks read a chapter of the Bible every night to me as a kid, which was fine. But trying to the Pentateuch or the prophets when i was a kid… man, that was weird stuff and not at like to stuff i got to read at the library!

Oh dear. This sounds like something that I would do :joy:

I read the Bible cover to cover during high school because I was really interested in religion but didn’t “get it”. Reading the Bible did not help :joy:

Yeah, Tolkein has never been night time reading for me. Well, except when I was a kid. I used to just read through those books like they were nothing. I can’t find the resolve as an adult. I want that brain back! Have you read through the appendices of LOTR? Really interesting stuff in there as well.

Fun fact: my mom was one of the first people who got to handle all his notes when Marquette got his archives. She has all sorts of interesting stories about seeing his edits.

I have a hard time believing those exist.

I had to try three times before I made it through that book. It’s got so much interesting information, but it is rough going.

I think it’s extra difficult because characters have multiple names/titles that are used throughout the book, and if you don’t remember all of them you might miss something important. I should have made a flow chart. I mean, I did for Wheel of Time eventually, and that wasn’t anywhere near as confusing.

ETA - also no one ever dies, but they do have kids. So he just keeps piling new characters with enormous names on top of one another.
