Tiny Complaints

I leave for a three-day conference at seven in the morning, and I think I’m coming down with the same disease husband has had for over a week.

Related: why is it academic conferences always take the whole weekend so that one works two weeks without a break and is simultaneously expected to be grateful for the travel funds required to do the job in the first place?

I have put thousands of sheets of paper into a total of (22) 4" binders this week that in all likelihood no one will read because we have submitted the electronic copies already but people require (2) physical hard copies of everything for Reasons.

This is it, this is my complaint.

I mean, what a waste of paper and also your time.

I’m having food apathy. I packed vegan meatballs with barbecue sauce for lunch and it just doesn’t taste good, I can’t choke it down.

I also packed a honeycrisp apple, but it was in the fridge so it is cold. My office is VERY cold. I do not want cold things to eat.

I made tea from a sampler my friend gifted me. It tastes OK but it is an ALARMING shade of deep teal blue which is very offputting. Who here has seen “Heathers” and remembers the drain cleaner scene? Yeah, like that. “I say we go with Big Blue here!”

Apparently Black Friday is thing in Italy, as evidenced by all the Black Friday commercials I keep hearing on Radio Italia, despite the fact that, you know, they don’t “celebrate” Thanksgiving, so there really is no reason for it to be the unoffical start of the Christmas season. I assume this is companies trying to compete with online retailers. Black Friday is so uncivilized here, I hope that aspect has not been exported.

Somewhat related: Google Adsense and FB have started to advertise to me in Italian because I visit Italian pages. LOL.

Canada has thanksgiving in October and black Friday when the Americans have it. None of this makes sense.

We’ll, thanksgiving in October in Canada makes sense. Harvest is over by late November up there above the Wall, right?

My team is working on converting our entire code base from Python 2.75 to Python 3 before Python 2 is no longer supported by IT. Turns out that this is EXTREMELY PAINFUL. So many things are broken, and there are no good solutions. It’s gonna take our whole team months if not like, half a year.

At least we are allocating time for it (instead of being like, “do this on top of your normal work”). And it won’t be my problem soon enough (I’ll be FIRE’d!).

I went to an industry night social thing and got home after 9 and had to wash my hair and now I need to wait to go to sleep until my hair is less wet and I am super tired.

Also, I do more run on sentences when tired apparently. Or maybe it was the cider.

Canadian Black Friday is set to compete with US Black Friday in our attempt to keep $$ in Canada and reduce cross border shopping. At least that is the logic that has been shared with me. And this is applicable to the population that lives next to all those border cities. but you knew all this anyways! That’s why it has become a “thing”.

I apologize on behalf on my country.

For Black Friday but also just because, at this point.

Electric car problems: It took a considerable amount of brainpower to think about where the next closest gas station is in order to put air in my tires today when the station around the corner was out of order.

D and I are both sick, so there’s no one with energy to play with the wiggler.

My jacket is too tight to button up, and 5 years ago it was altered to fit perfectly.

I saw someone today who I had to call 911 to get help. But 911 sent police. I would like us to have an elite force of 24/7 social workers please. We’re lucky that I live somewhere where chances of this turning into police brutality were low to zero. But they just don’t have the right skills and look scary. I think our elite social worker team needs sweater vests in their choice of colours and either giant skirts or jeans or khakis. And their cars can have supplies of useful stuff like boots and mitts and coats and teddy bears in all sizes.

I’m also terrified that this woman was brought home and dumped without investigating if home was safe. Because she seemed clear-ish but didn’t want help from me directly. And something in me says that home might not be safe.

The elite social work team needs some snacks too.

And yes, those that dropped her off should have checked whether home is a safe place.

Work trucks are expensive. Like, I don’t want your laredo package or the raptor or the whatever. I just want a vehicle I can throw 2000 pounds of rocks in and drive on an unpaved road. Have you seen the engines they’re trying to put into the 1/2 ton trucks? FFS, I could out-pull one of those things whilst wearing a pair of bowling shoes.

I could buy a corvette for less.

The ice coming out of the company ice maker / water source is brown. I didn’t notice until this afternoon. Gross.
