I have some … concerns as someone who will have cats here. Cats who are INDOOR cats.
After 80 minutes talking to customer service that day, they said they would send an expedited replacement gift card to arrive before my trip. Now I’m back from my trip and the gift card still hasn’t arrived! I just filed a BBB complaint, hopefully that will get their attention and a resolution.
And someone I know in Germany recently had her cat fall out of a screen less window.
The cat was fine. You can buy screens, it turns out.
I can also say from personal experience that no screens is how you sometimes wake up to find a surprise bonus cat inside your apartment
Things keep breaking that seem like they should be within my capability of fixing (car battery and doorknob) but I can’t figure out what’s wrong with them and google isn’t helping
Batsignal to @smacky to see if you have had to fix this kind of doorknob before:
Yes!
That is a mortise type doorset if you want to look it up.
The doorknob is held in place by a small set screw. If it’s loose the doorknob can come apart. If you lose it you have a problem, they are hard to replace.
That’s the screw.
After managing a few of these door hardware sets I feel pretty good about them but the first time it felt like alien technology.
If you have specific questions I can try to answer.
Looking at your specific problem, the end of that rod looks damaged. Do you have an architectural salvage store where you live?
They make modern replacements that fit old sets but they don’t look nearly as cool.
It does look damaged but it seems to me like we would have noticed damaging it in that way (bending a bit of metal)
Also the short part of the metal looks damaged in the photo but I pulled it back out and took a second look and it’s a very flat clean cut, so it’s supposed to be that short. None of the threads look stripped either.
So either the thing is not supposed to be hooked and it’s very broken, or it’s supposed to be hooked on to something and has come loose
And since the other side of it is a thumb lever (“handleset” according to the internet) it’s not like the other side screws on the way it would if the other side was a round knob.
But I cannot find a diagram or explanation about how the lever part and the knob part interact to explain if it should even be bent? Which is like the entire point of the internet and I’m mad about it.
The set screw isn’t the problem in this case, I learned that issue fixing doorknobs in our last place
I guess my actual question is: what is supposed to hold the doorknob in the door? There are no screws, and the far end isn’t threaded. And if I shove it in I can still make the latch move, it just falls out again.
Which makes me think that the end is supposed to be bent, because it’s the only thing I can see that would hold on internally to anything
I wish I could come over and puzzle it out with you. I looked up ‘mortise exterior diagram’ and found things like this
Maybe find one that matches your equipment and see if that helps?
That is so close to my actual lock, thanks for the search term!
We have an antique locksmith in town (according to google) so worst case scenario I’ll throw some money at the problem.
For the past few years I have paid my car and house insurance online with a credit card. They have started charging a fee that is more than my reward points so it is not worth it. It was not a ton, like $25, but always nice to get. Darn.
3:30 am is way too early to get up.
City inspector showed up without calling to complete another of the MANY inspections needed on our generator this morning.
It was first thing in the morning and we were both working in our PJs. Had to scramble to find pants. Did not find bra in time.
Yeah, well, fuck the patriarchy!
I’m finally getting a replacement gift certificate! I did my best to request for additional compensation but they’re just ignoring that part.
The BBB is an awesome resource if you’re in the U.S.! They’re really forced to listen to you (unless it’s a shitty business that already has a horrible rating and doesn’t care anyway). If you tried and no one at the company is listening, just file a BBB complaint.
Ankles COVERED in huge mosquito bites.
I missed the Purolator delivery by 20 minutes and now I can’t get my yarn until tomorrow afternoon AND they sent it to a depot all the way across town.
