The Unf*ck It Thread

I did so much unfucking, and it’s the most frustrating type. No big visual payoff. Just a lot of shuffling things from cupboards, throwing out expired lotions from a bin, old shampoo under the sink, etc. useful stuff but ughhhh.

I un :duck: ed a space!

Here’s what my kitchen looked like after a weeklong cottage trip followed by a weekend cabin trip followed by a 10-day camping trip. With some BN pickups on the few days I was home. I didn’t really unpack in between trips (only perishables and laundry), I just grabbed the things that overlapped trips out of one bag and put them in another.

And here’s this afternoon:

Very impressive work! :star:

That is impressively un🦆d

Such a satisfying before and after! :relieved:

Oohhh wow!! Great job

We have been unf*cking our backyard! It was full of like 2 foot tall weeds. Too thick at the bottom for the weedeater; we had to cut them by hand. So that was fun. Now it is tilled and in September we will plant some low-water plants back there. Regular grass was not a success. It’s so narrow back there that you have to water by hand, and apparently I got bored and all the grass died and was replaced with super giant weeds.

I’m impressed! I need to tackle my backyard at some point. I have weeds that are taller than me. But it’s summer and it’s hot and I don’t wanna.

I only got it done because of this thread, so thank you forum people who inspire me! And @Meowkins for starting the thread.

Tomorrow I unfuck the child’s craft space. There may be some plastic tubs of organisation involved, and a bin for rubbish…

I started cleaning my washing machine because it was a little dirty, and as I started cleaning I realized it was actually a lot dirty. Not to be dramatic or anything but the filter may haunt me for the rest of my life. Anyway now I know to clean it before it gets that gross. I don’t know how old it is but I suspect the previous owner of my house never cleaned it.

Washing machines need to be cleaned?

(Now I don’t even want to think about the state of my machine that was in my house long before I moved in 16 years ago)

Mine did.

Photos of clean machine, descriptions of grossness

The under side of the lid and the inner edge that the lid sits on were kind of scuzzy, like detergent residue had attracted dirt. It was especially bad around the place where you add bleach (I don’t use bleach so I just ignored it until now). There was also some grossness around the top edge of the drum.

The worst part was this filter in the middle of the agitator. It was pretty evenly coated in a layer of sludge with some larger pieces of I-don’t-even-want-to-guess-what. And when I lifted the filter out, the part of the agitator that it fits into was similarly nasty.

But now it’s all clean (or clean enough) and also I just realized my nails match the agitator so that’s fun.

That looks amazing!

What types of cleaning do you do before hosting houseguests? I need to make sure we’ve got sheets that fit the pullout couch bed, and the bathroom will be cleaned top to bottom. Anything else?

Vacuuming (or mopping) if we haven’t in a while so they don’t have to breathe our dust. Putting stuff away (unnecessary if you don’t leave things out).

Your house may be cleaner than mine so this is a moot point, but I try to look around and see things with new eyes to find things to deep clean. I usually only clean base boards before people will come over, for example.

Probably not relevant for all, but everyone in my house is under 5’3”, so I also try to think about what taller people might see that I miss (eg top of fridge).

Wow good call, we’re both shorties and the cats like to sit on top of the fridge to watch while we cook!

I usually will vacuum my couch cushions and wash all the blankets around. Remove some dog hair haha. I also (weather permitting) open up windows and air the house out for a bit, since it’s so easy to get used to our own smells.
