Donavan is so great - he trains on a public mall rink—no music. Also moment of appreciation for the mexican team jacket.
JASON BROWN is phenomenal, his choreo.
I love when there are imaginary sword fights in step sequences.
I can’t remember who it was, but one skater actually resheathed their sword at the end of the sequence- usually they just magically disappear…
He’s amazing. If he had skated in the era before quads, I think he would have been the top. But I’m so glad we have him to watch
My favorite thing about Chen’s short program- you can see him celebrating in the final spin. Man, he’s incredible.
And Brown’s short program, OMG, he is amazing.
SERIOUSLY. THAT LIGHT SABER CHOREO! reminds me of philippe candeloro’s 1998 three muskateers sword fight.
I think I’m the only person who follows all the figure skating and then nopes out of the olympics. Burned too often?
I’m watching stans flip out that Hanyu was sabotaged by a hole in the ice.
As if someone put it there on purpose? They should be pretty used to giant holes in the ice, those quad jumps, man do they divot, even edge jumps often take out a chunk.
I hate that he popped though. I really wanted to see him skate clean.
I really wanted him to be clean because I desperately want him and chen to go head to head both skating clean.
But Fanyu’s seem to have never seen the ice before. I make massive holes from double toes at my local rink. I weigh 115lbs. Of course holes happen. It even looked like a big hole but it isn’t a skater’s fault.
I’ve heard some skaters say that part of the game is being aware of that and setting up appropriately. I don’t know how realistic that is to change your path. But that ice is a minefield of holes, and he skated relatively early- imagine it by Jason Brown.
this happens to me every olympics when I tweet about skating, some dude loves to give opinions. And I’m not a world champion but i imagine it’s even worse because they get puffed up by the algorithm
Donovan has gone viral in latin america, his short program has almost 1 million views on youtube (geo locked if you’re outside mexico or argentina) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0UskVBHT5k
There were apparently over 170K live viewers on the latin american stream during his short.
This is very exciting. He’s the first Mexican figure skater to ever qualify for the free skate at the olympics, and the the first Mexican figure skater to go to the olympics at all in 30 years.
I just love him. He’s got charisma for miles and such talent.
A puff piece on his training (he had to move cities because his rink closed, skates in a mall on PUBLIC ICE):
I hope he gets funding from this. He was great at 4CC last year.
Very exciting that he’s made it to Olympics! Always makes me happy to see people from not-typical winter sports countries qualify and perform well.
Also he’s super cute!
Oh my goodness, drama drama drama around the team event medals…
But in other news, I leave this here.
What happened? I watched the competition, but don’t follow skating news.
There is a “legal issue” that is holding up the medal ceremony.
Reports are that it has to do with an ROC drug test before the Olympics.
Oh! Thanks for explaining.
