I have a button dilemma. I bought these buttons years ago without a plan, but they would go beautifully with this yarn. Small problem: the pattern calls for 8 buttons, not 6. (It should be easy enough to do 6 buttonholes instead.) Bigger problem: the buttons are glass, about a half inch tall, and I’m afraid they’ll be too heavy for the cotton/rayon yarn.
I am no help on buttons but that cardigan looks amazing!!
They’re beautiful buttons and go gorgeously, but I would share your concerns. How wide is the button band, and how sturdy is it?
The instructions say to pick up the stitches around the front and neck and knit 8 rows of 1x1 rib (the third row is the buttonhole row). So, about an inch? Not sure how to quantify its sturdiness.
I wonder if I could pick up more stitches and a smaller needle to make it more structured… but that sounds like math.
And I got to the next colour in the yoke and decided to frog the whole thing and make the zauberball contrast for all of the yoke instead of having two different contrasts.
cute!
Here’s the pattern for reference:

I used the same yarn as the coral version. Those buttons look smaller, and are definitely regular four-hole buttons instead of shank buttons. Hm.
Ok I said I wasn’t any help buuuuut I had a thought. If they’re heavy glass and shank buttons I might not use them. I’m not as familiar with hand knitted buttons and garments but when sewing things, shank buttons concentrate all their weight on that one point, whereas the 4 hole can spread it out a bit and it’s closer to the garment so it pulls less. It might be too much strain
Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. Alas.
Do you know what kind of fabric/garment/construction a set of 6 glass shank buttons would work for?
Anyone have a recommendation for a place to buy some cute 4-hole buttons? I’d prefer to shop in person, but… COVID.
A structured woven probably. A nice wool shirt or jacket, maybe? I’d definitely do a reinforced placate with interfacing and facing
Etsy has a billion buttons, some of which are extremely interesting.
Does your local sewing shop have a website? You might be able to order from them.
I have so many buttons in stash, but none would fit the criteria of ‘cute’ alas
And now with the zauberball and the planned russet yarn for the body
I think this version is much more special and wearable
Oh that’s gorgeous.
I picked out these on Etsy:

I will have 42 buttons left over. Does anyone want some variegated blue swirl buttons?
Also, they were less than I budgeted for, so I got myself some extra Etsy treats…
That sweater looks amazing!
The russet is perfect against the light background.
That is stunning!
That is a fantastic color combo.
Wow! This is giving me life
