He’s a 70something commercial illustrator (mostly marker illustrations as far as I know) who wants to have a web presence with some portfolio examples.

Squarespace would work well for him then. They have good image sizing and editing tools built in (some automatic based on theme) that keep things all in the right aspect ratios so they display well on desktop and mobile views and keeps things simple.

Eggplant pepper tortellini or Mediterranean stuffed eggplant…if I remember right both of those typically include garlic, but I think you could leave it out and increase the other herbs and it would still be tasty.

Thanks! Pretty much every recipe across the globe starts with garlic so I’m used to just leaving it out as long as it’s not one of the 3 main ingredients like in babaganoush.

I’m a really big fan of soy and sesame eggplant over rice.

Chop up your eggplant, salt it good and let it sit for 45 or so minutes (gets out some of the water). Rinse the salt off. Toss the eggplant in cornstarch so that it’s well covered. Heat up some neutral oil in a pan; toss the eggplant in and saute. While the eggplant is cooking, make up some sauce with sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger (and garlic if you like it, another allium or just nothing at all if you don’t). I usually make about 1/4 cup worth for one eggplant. When the eggplant’s done, toss the sauce in and let it heat up and thicken with the cornstarch. Serve over rice, preferably with sesame seeds and some chopped green onion on top.

Is it better to voice complaints that you can’t do anything about, or stop the desire for something that can’t happen as it begins to form? Is this a false dichotomy?

For me it’s kind of both? Sometimes you just HAVE to vent. But if you truly can’t solve the problem or influence it in any way, working on acceptance will help your mental health overall.

Anyone have a recommended resource(s) (website/article or book) for someone assigned male at birth but who likes the idea of non-binary/enby and wants to understand more about it?

Oh Joy Sex Toy has a variety of sex ed (as well as product review) comics and has one NB related comic: https://www.ohjoysextoy.com/nonbinary-and-bisexual/

That site also often recommends Scarleteen as a resource. It’s aimed more at teens and young adults but it still might be a good starting point.

I remember there being a website where I could enter the make and model of my computer and it came up with a list of compatible upgrades. Now I can’t remember where it is or what it’s called. Help!

Newegg?

If theoretically a person wanted to dip toes into making videos of work process and vlogging about it (art, sewing), theoretically does anyone have low-end DSLR camera suggestions? And non Adobe video editing program suggestions?

Asking for myself. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Paging @anomalily but only if you have time you crazy busy cat!

How cheap are you looking for? I love my little vlogging camera, it’s ~$700 or so, but you can get a used one. It’s not a DSLR though but I rarely use my DLSR as it is so heavy.

Non-adobe: Final Cut Pro :joy:but it’s more expensive than Adobe.

But * DaVinci Resolve is free and now does editing as well as is industry standard for color-grading.

@aaronpk will have suggestions

I’m hoping for less than that. What about these “packs” ? Conceptually? https://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T7-Professional/dp/B07PBYQ62S/ref=psdc_3017941_t1_B01D93Z89W

I have no idea if DSLR is necessary, it’s just something I know is “good” :stuck_out_tongue: I’m very camera-noob! And yay open source options!

I have some thoughts!

I’m assuming you don’t mean literally DSLR, but something that gets you roughly the quality of a DSLR. There’s also “mirrorless” aka micro four thirds cameras, and even some of the “point and shoot” ones have gotten extremely good lately, like the Canon G7X II that anomalily has.

So here are some that I’d recommend:

Lumix G7 with 14-42mm kit lens - $497 - I’ve been recommending this to everyone since it’s an extremely affordable way to get into the micro four thirds ecosystem. I’ve been using this for my livestreams and work trainings the last month or so. Since it’s an interchangeable lens, you can upgrade the lens later. It’ll be great for photography and video. The downside is in order to use it as a webcam with your computer you’ll need some extra hardware, which is hard to come by right now because everyone wants that hardware.

Canon G7X II - $499 - This is the one anomalily has, it’s so small and great for travel. The lens is built in, but it is a zoom lens so it’s flexible. It’s surprisingly good for a point and shoot. It’s hard to go wrong with this. The downside is you can’t really use it as a webcam because you can’t turn off the overlays on the HDMI output.

This isn’t quite the same question, but I wrote up a bunch of info about cameras/audio here: https://aaronparecki.com/2020/03/24/4/tips-and-tools-for-remote-meetings-and-presentations

Thanks! I have no need for it to be a webcam so should be set there. I’ll look into these.

Is your phone good enough quality until you see if you like the process?

oh and for editing, Resolve is the best free app, but it’s definitely got a learning curve. iMovie is also a good option if you have a Mac, and if you want to upgrade from iMovie, Final Cut Pro is a natural next step. If you have an iPad, then Luma Fusion is actually a really good video editing app for the iPad. There’s lots of good tutorials on it on YouTube too.

Possibly! Definitely would be a smart way to start. I’d need to get a tripod for it, and figure out how to export video from it to a computer (it doesn’t have a SIM card currently). But would certainly be a way to start learning editing.
