Ordering shoes online for my kid. Apparently he might need 8.5WW, the 8.5W that we got is too tight around the middle of the foot. I wanted to get 9W or 9WW but the three different styles I found that even have 8.5WW don’t have 9s available at all. Do I order 9W/9WW in some other style entirely? Or both? Do I just order all the shoes? Halp. Someone make a decision for me.

The Feels

The reason he needs shoes that are so wide are because these are meant to go with his SMO ankle braces (like this or this because the image isn’t showing up right in the post). Insurance only pays for one set of braces per year, never mind that kids grow throughout the year, so I feel like I have to get the Right Shoes.

I’m also buying new for the first time ever, I had lucked out with used in past years. We’re lucky that we can afford to spend $$$$ upfront to buy a bunch of different sizes but there’s stuff I’d rather be spending money on now (charity! local take out!) and it seems petty to be express ordering shoes but he has a legit medical need.

I also wanted to get him light up shoes but I guess THAT’S not happening now. At this point I just want a fucking cobbler to make shoes from scratch.

I haven’t needed to shop for wide shoes myself but when I needed wider shoes as a kid my mom used either Stride Rite or New Balance IIRC.

New Balance with what I tend to go with. I have extremely wide feet, and even their widest shoes still blow out on the sides for me, but they tend to do better than anything else.

You’d think I’m just saying I have wide feet, but the last podiatrist I saw took a look at my x-rays and said “I dunno, you just have weird feet. Maybe you could wear sandals.”

Stride Rite was the one that only had three options. Looks like New Balance has more but their sizing is different? Their size options jump from 7 to 10.5. I guess maybe get 10.5WW and also some from Stride Rite and hope for the best?

I hate this. I wear the same shoes every damn day. They’re Sketchers black slip ons, when the last pair wore out I went to the Sketchers store in the mall and bought a clearance pair of black slip ons after making sure they fit properly because I couldn’t remember what size I was. I reject the stereotype that women like shoe shopping. /whining

This is an actual option. There are some on etsy, and I’m sure the internet has further suggestions.
Are you part of a fb group for parents of kids with the thing your kid has? Groups like that have been super helpful with suggestions for what will work with my disability. Go crowdsource from people who have been there.

Or can he wear moccasins forever? I got very nice moccasins when my foot was broken and now I wear them forever. They stretch to infinity.

You’re on to something with moccasins. I’ve helped mold leather shoes for some of my kiddos with KAFOs. Sometimes works for a super good fit. (Wet and stretch the leather, that whole shebang)

Quick question: If we have claritin that expired in 2018 and allergies that are starting to flare up is it better to take 1-2 pills/ day or should we just suck it up and buy new stuff that wont get here for a week?

Some medicines expire by losing potency but there are some that become more toxic as they degrade. I’m no pharmacist so I don’t know specifics

Yeah I only have 3 sets of footwear: walking shoes, garden shoes, boots. Hoping to see if I can wear sandals again this year now that I’ve given up on orthotics. For the walking shoes I’ve been buying multiple pairs at a time once I find one I like.

Good luck with your search! For my CP I only had to wear the ankle brace at night

Go ahead and order but take the usual dose while you wait. I can personally attest that expired Claritin won’t poison you in the short term…

Anyone have a favorite banana bread recipe? I have (3) bananas that are approaching “dun wanna” levels of ripeness.

I think it needs the zing of lemon.

The recipe I have in my handy dandy Joy of Cooking cookbook from my grandmother also calls for lemon zest. Butts! I decided to make it without. Hopefully it’ll be good without the zing.

Have you looked at Plae? If Stride Rite doesn’t have good sizing in what you need, Plae might. They’re pricey but do seem to have a lot of used on kidizen and have a whole section of adaptive shoes that are designed for orthotics.

There was another brand that just came up in my insta feed but I can’t remember what it was. If I do, I’ll send it your way.

Sizing kids shoes is HARD. Hard enough without also having to find a way to manage getting the right size with braces and all that and also having to do it without leaving the house or doing a bunch of mailing back and forth, and I think it’s totally worth spending big bucks on it if you can, especially since stable, fitting shoes are so important (for all kids but I’m guessing your kiddo especially).

I think it will be fine! Not having lemon doesn’t really throw of the proportions or amount of sugar. It does cut the cloying flavor banana can have sometimes

I often do that one without the lemon zets and it’s good sans zing.

Pharmaceutical engineer parent would say take them, but still order new.
