Random Questions

Appreciate the question @Greyweld as I’m debating replacing our 1940s oven/range and investigating options. It’s a statement piece but also has been an albatross and difficult to get repaired. I basically havent used our oven in a year. (The hinge is bent and we need to tape it closed and it leaks a ton of heat)

My friends have a GE induction range, and I think they are really happy with it. I stay with them in the summers, so I’ve used it a lot. it’s really nice! It has all sorts of settings that no one uses, but I’m sure some people find them valuable. They have the touchscreen one, and it’s nice because you can lock the buttons, and clean the entire surface, so there’s never random food stuck places, etc.

Okay fuck it. Anyone want to do some research for/with me?

Recommend for me a range/oven combo, stand alone (not in-wall) and without a hood (we don’t have ventilation set up)?
Induction preferred.

Halp.

I’m not making any decisions right now, but I need something to noodle on and potentially put forth to Partner as a path forward.

Eta:
Current oven/range. Pardon the mess. 40"wide. A long boi!

First step: modern plug? Is the electrical set up to support a modern stove there? (Ie is the branch circuit large enough capacity?)

ETA SirB says you can look at the breaker panel to see how many amps goes to the breaker for the stove. Should be printed in tiny numbers on the breaker.

Good question. How do I know?

I settled on the Frigidaire induction because it was the cheapest recommended-ish brand and I’m fairly illiquid right now.

Added an edit. Start by looking at the electrical service. You can also look at the stove itself and see if it’s direct wired, plugged in, what the situation is in the back is good info too.

OKAY.
There is a bank of (4) outlets behind the oven. Currently it is plugged into (1) though I have no idea what that is doing LOL there is basically nothing electrical on this current oven/range LOL. Maybe the clock at one point? It died perhaps before I was born.

I investigated the breaker box as well. There is not a dedicated breaker for the oven. There is a breaker for the kitchen, kitchen counter 1, and kitchen counter 2.
Let me know if a pic of that set up would be helpful.

Feel free to send me pics of the panel, any labels on the panel, and any plugs behind the range, and I’ll have SirB take a look. I’m guessing it’s a gas range and oven then?

Yes, a gas oven+range currently. The pilot lights stay lit for the range, but the oven gets manually lit every time. Pics of the breaker being texted to you now. :vulcan_salute: The plugs are just literally a bank of (4) three-prong plugs.

I will be calling places on Monday to see if I can magic up a person who wants to work on it. But thanks for helping me with this ya’ll. It’s making me feel like there are options should I fail to find someone who wants to troubleshoot for us.

Switched over to text, but yep there’s options! Just “how expensive” is the main question, and a bunch of that will depend on your local code requirements.

Appreciate it!
For context, what BJ indicated is I’d need to add to our electrical to support a modern electric or induction stove. There’s room, but an electrician would be involved.

Can you confirm that to replace it with a gas range+oven we would NOT need to do electrical work?

Ha yeah sorry I switched partially to text.

Re gas- It would have to be gas range AND oven, but yes. Single 120v plug, which is what you have now. And no pilots to light

Man, that’s super helpful, thank you so much @Bracken_Joy you saved me going down a rabbit hole that I don’t think we can currently afford. As much as we want induction, I don’t think an induction range+oven PLUS getting 2K$ of electrical work is at all feasible.
Please also thank SirB for me!

He loves getting to help on stuff like this honestly. And learning about your stove was its own reward  he started muttering about which mechanical guys he could get to machine replacement parts for something like that. Nerd

Oh SirB mentioned- do you have a carbon monoxide detector next to the stove? :grimacing:
