I’ll call and ask!
I’m enjoying all the de-gasification talk. The Boy can’t smell natural gas at all. I’ve installed explosive gas detectors but it still feels dangerous.
But it’s not our stove that’s gas… It’s the furnace and water heater. Does anyone have knowledge or experience going electric in medium cold climate (Denver)? This may be years off but one wants to know the options in case the HVAC or water heater dies a sudden death.
I just know that in our area electricity is more expensive than gas for those things. However there is an electrification initiative and starting in a certain year (don’t remember which) no new houses built will be allowed to use gas. We are dealing with it on the commercial building side too because all federal agencies are required to replace with electric instead of gas as we do projects, but our utility bills are going to sky rocket and congress has not appropriated more money for that. Unfunded initiatives are the best
I’m about an hour north of Denver and have been entirely electric since I moved out here 15ish years ago. Not sure what Denver rates are, but if it’s helpful my last five years of electric bills (no 2022 yet) have been
That’s with a 25-30 year old heater covering just shy of 2000sq feet (half above and half below grade).
The building is technically a condo, but there’s only one shared wall and no one above or below so with my neighbor living with her daughter 2/3 of the year I’m not getting anything from that direction. And I don’t run my air conditioner much since I’ve been moving into the basement when summers get ugly.
Electric water heater is an easy swap, you can look at the expected usage on the energy star rating.
For electric heat, if you have forced air already installed you can swap over to a heat pump pretty easily (which can also be your AC!). They’re super efficient so may actually end up reducing bills depending (for example my old apartment had a $40/month hook up fee for gas even though it was only for heat so only in use for ~5 months so it would have been cheaper to switch everything to electric). If you have radiators they do make heat pumps that can do water but they’re harder to find and might have more maintenance issues. The new ones are good down to like 0 degrees F, and you get tons of rebates from the state and like $10k back from the inflation reduction act.
I want heat pumps.
I think that in Denver a heat pump would need a supplementary furnace as well?
I want a bike. 5’1". The bike will be on paved roads. Not for commuting. Weekend rail trails and city river walks. Also what do i put my almost 4 year old in? A tricycle or balance bike or trailer thing?
Sounds like you need a gravel bike.
Do i just walk into a bike store and say “i need a gravel bike” and start sitting on things
I mean I’d google it for a month or two obsessively first. Join a few Facebook groups. Watch YouTube videos.
I guess budget is the big thing. Bikes go from a bike shaped object at Walmart for $50 to a $15,000 road bike.
Actually I’m overthinking this. I want a gravel bike.
You probably just want a bike with tires that are like 38mm or so. To be suitable for dirt and path.
The kid part is harder. Trailers without electric bike seem heavy and hard work.
Balance bike seem ok but limits distance can travel and I’d they quit on you you’ve got a kid and two bikes and you’re a few km from home and fucked.
Do you have a bike nonprofit near you? There is one in my city that rescues bikes from the landfill and gets unclaimed stolen bikes from the police and fixed them up and sells them for cheap.
Just go to the bike store and talk to someone? They can show you options. We found them really, really helpful this summer.
I loved a trail a bike for preschoolers. Sometimes they help pedal if you kind of yell about it.
How do I get greasy hair smell out of the head rest of my fabric upholstered recliner?
How tall is your almost 4 year old? Mine is tall and wouldn’t fit in a trailer by a little after 4. She loved her balance bike but could really only go a mile or two on it. So, if you’re going further than that a tag along that attaches to your bike is probably best.
We got a FollowMe tandem that lets us attach her bike with pedals to an adult bike when she poops out, but that is way overkill for most people and pretty expensive.
Febreeze! (I dunno how to clean it tho)
Steam cleaner with a hand attachment. You can also sprinkle baking soda, let it sit, then vacuum, which should help but won’t work nearly as well.
Anyone have a free app for workout routines that they like? Ideally something that will just give me a basic routine to do using mostly weight machines at the gym
