My homebrew forum has annual contests for the worst wine. I feel like this might be able to finally beat the bottled lemon juice w/ extra sugar.

…I once accidentally got HeLa cells in my eyes. My family thinks it makes a great “getting to know you” story

Lol I guess I should remember this cautionary tale when I don’t feel like wearing my safety glasses!

Yep, I wore no safety glasses in grad school, haha.

I was holding a 6-well plate up to the light to check the growth, and somehow only grabbed the lid and not the base of the plate. 0/10, do not recommend the taste.

Yeah this is the same for me. I exercise most days between 90min to 3-4 hours outside in the desert heat. Electrolytes definitely are not a placebo for me, and make a huge difference regarding whether I’ll be a functional human after exercise, or curled up on the bathroom floor with a migraine.

Sometimes when I feel a headache starting, I honestly crave/eat table salt. It’s so weird, but it tastes good and makes me feel better.

Related to the wedding thing, sort of.

My dad had a default gift he gave newlyweds: TV trays, based on the idea that they wouldn’t have a dining room table. A friend gave fire extinguishers.

We never did have a new “setting up house” gift. What I tend to do is find something I think the person will like and pack it with rolls of TP when I send it. Everyone uses it, it makes great/cheap packing material. My SIL for example, thought it was “cute” of me…then moved to her current house and had no idea wtf the TP was the first day…and remembered my box.

Do you have a default gift? If so, what is it?

I’ve never eaten plain table salt, but I always keep emergency potato chips on hand for headache situations and add extra salt to them haha.

I eat chips after working out too! It really helps with headaches.

I have a default baby shower gift. I do the Nurse Stuff. No one else likes to. Those pre made baby healthcare kits suck  and if I know the mom well and she’s planning to BF, I get the boob stuff from the registry no one else is willing to get :joy:

Sounds like the perfect drink to pair with Koolaid pickles

I wonder if they still sell salt tablets? We used to have them in the cabinet when I was a kid, in case you got heat stroke.

I agree that if you are a roofer, or if you are doing really athletic stuff in high heat, your salt needs will be high, but I don’t think there’s much clinical evidence that just upping your salt consumption won’t be enough. There’s also some danger of overhydrating that’s been pretty well documented.

Oh man, the water toxicity/overhydration thing is so nuts! I’ve seen guys on the football team get all woozy and have to get medical care because they were just drinking water.

And I’ll agree on the salt in food. When I upped my intake to 5g a day, it made a big difference. Only downside is it was way too much salt to enjoy the food

ETA: Pickle juice. When I get (or other athletes I compete with get) nasty leg cramps, a few chugs of pickle juice fixes it unreasonably fast. Like, faster than it could have gotten into the bloodstream.

Yup! I get salt tablets (that also have magnesium, potassium, and vitamin d). I always carry those at the minimum when I exercise outside, after passing out on a short but hot bike ride (my boyfriend revived me with cold water, then we had to beg a gel off of a passing cyclist lol). Usually I also have electrolyte drink mix and/or gels as well, depending on how hot it is and how hard I’m going.

So uh yeah electrolytes are not placebo in this household lol

OH also maybe I’m weird but I looooove V8 after a hot workout. Salty + cool is the best ha

I am also noticing a pattern that the electrolytes hive is mostly based in the CO/AZ area. We have to take hydration very seriously here! We (nicely!!) push them on out-of-state guests and this is only reinforcing it for me.

Oooh that’s very kind of you (and an excellent idea- stealing it for when we have out of state guests!)

Also because of this thread I really, really want potato chips, but all we have is slightly stale popcorn lol

Where do I buy music if I don’t want to be tied to a specific branded ecosystem? I want to buy an album and to own the files, which I can transfer without having specific apps. Is that even a thing, outside of bandcamp?
The only way around this that I have found is piracy and that doesn’t seem right.

If you find out, let me know!!

I think now you never own the files right? Even if you buy the album?
