@Bernadette thanks! I try not to buy single serving stuff
@Panda looks like Skratch Labs is sold at REI and I have some dividend rewards to use there! I will go pick some up tonight. Now to decide on a flavor…

What about Nuun tablets - hikers use them.
I’ve personally had stomach issues with Nuun, but of course everyone is different
I love Nuun, and I have two every day. I used to have daily headaches and these took them away, and I recover better from exercise.
I also just tried LMNT electrolytes and really loved them too, but they are more expensive than nuun and I didn’t notice any difference between them, plus they are single serve packets only
ETA: if you want something with more carbs/energy for exercise I’ve also loved Scratch Labs, and Tailwind. Both are really gentle on the stomach
I use the LMNT recipe with just the salt, potassium and magnesium malate.
Huh, turns out that chugging water throughout my workout wasn’t good for me!
I mean take stuff on the internet w a grain of salt (yes the irony LOL), yeah? Like, 8 glasses of water might not be rooted in science, but that doesn’t mean specific alternatives or recipes are either.
If it makes you feel good, do it! But i don’t think what variety of electrolyte solution we as non-competitive / amateur work out folx drink is going to materially harm or hinder us OR materially improve our lives.
Someone else once pointed out, i think back in my MMM days, that electrolytes are also just in food. So eating a snack also works!
Eta: i did drink electrolyte packets in water after surgery! They def have their uses and are also a+ for hangovers but ya know.
(Not to snark on people who this worked for! I’m super glad you don’t have headaches any more! This is just making fun of a thing I’ve noticed in a looooot of keto bro posts)
I’m always curious when people go directly from “our ancestors ran across the Savannah without water stations!” to “add magnesium malate, a purified chemical that became available to humans in the last 100 years.” Like… if the Savannah people had such great and healthy lives then shouldn’t we be doing what they did (aka drinking untreated water out of the same places animals did aka no)
I’ve always heard (“heard” here, no actual knowledge) that if you drink only electrolyte drinks in heat or while exercising, you’ll feel satisfied too quickly and won’t actually take in enough fluids. So alternating with water is better.
All electrolyte solutions are descendants of the rehydrating solution that was developed for kids with diarrheal diseases in the 60s. The electrolyte part is basically sugar and salt, which is what you need if you’re losing a lot of fluids.
Eating a pretzel and drinking koolaid accomplished the same thing. All else is marketing!
I think there’s a lot of placebo effect from “I bought the special expensive stuff and I feel great!” though.
Would love a Maintenance Phase episode about this!
At the olympic training center the nutritionists said to eat gummy bears during workouts while drinking water, instead of those little energy gummy things they sell.
Note to all: none of this is directed at anyone, and lots of good points. But responding as a fellow athlete type for Meow
Liquid IV, even though I dislike the name, works well. We had some off brand gatorade-esque syrup when i loaded trucks in 100F + weather for hours on end. Sure, there’s electrolytes in things, but I depends on how active you are.
How does this compare with the salt tabs used by the CCC during the depression era construction projects?
The needs of a laborer or athlete are going to truly different from what people who don’t engage in that sort of activity need. The low salt tomfoolery makes it even worse. Unlike most folks, I actually do blood tests when I feel things are off and I’ve been able to see a big difference in my electrolyte levels when I’m using a quality product vs something like gatorade.
I do however like mixing the powders (brand name or not) with twice the suggested water. Otherwise urine output is noticeably lower, suggesting that despite my intentions, I’m not getting enough liquid.
I mean, pedialyte is hard to beat for intra-workout or hella hangover.
Oh man, gummy bears. There are so many packages of them strewn around the strongman gym at any given point
I think you’re a great example of when it matters!! Same with like, major endurance athletes. You are a fantastic outlier.
(The sugar and salt content of Gatorade is practically identical to cell culture media. It’s even red. At some point with no supervision but access to sterile material I want to try to grow cells in Gatorade)
Most of us are in the Kool aid zone.
I personally have found that the LMNT approach with higher electrolyte levels had been very helpful at eliminating exercise-induced headaches.
I also test electrolyte levels when I get blood work done. I’ve had low sodium levels on several occasions. I feel a lot better when I consistently use electrolyte drinks.
Now I just want to toss some champagne yeast into gatorade and see what happens.
Oh I mean mammalian cells. Yeast will grow in anything with sugar. Gatorade wine sounds gross though.
I mean HeLa grow in practically everything so it wouldn’t be that surprising if they grow in gatorade. Something pickier like MSCs might be a better test. Although FBS is really expensive to waste on an experiment just for trolling.
If you do you have to drink it out of a hillbilly wine glass.
I have been to WEDDINGS that have these.
