Wow. Thank you, this is SO helpful. I don’t know why I am so intimidated by something that I know is not that big of a deal, but here I am. I actually feel more confident now, knowing that orchids are hard to keep alive, because I once had one for 4 years! It was a valentines present from a bf and it outlived our relationship by 3 years haha.

I like the look of the Pothos, I think I will start there. I really want a fiddle-leaf fig because they are so pretty, but I see that is on your list of difficult plants so I guess I’ll wait for that one to see if I can keep the Pothos alive first

Snake plants are also nigh unkillable as long as you don’t water them too much. I agree about the advice to avoid the small plants, they tend to be finicky. If the plant seems unhappy and you are giving it water as @noitsbecky described, try moving it around. It might need to be closer to a window or could be in a draft you didn’t know about. Most of my house plants get switched about 3 or four times before I figure out where they are happiest.

One of my former roommates was a professional farmer. Our apartment was full of beautiful green plants. Her secret? More than half of them died. She just kept experimenting to find plants that liked the climate of our apartment and then propagated those.

I hope you find some nice plants to try!

Oh that’s a point. I’ve gifted away a lot of plants that weren’t thriving after trying a couple spots. So it’s a curated collection I suppose lol!

I decided recently not to buy a snake plant because I didn’t have a spot for it but y’all are making me reconsider.

Don’t mind the phalanx of chairs to protect them, or the drama queen on the shelf- he’ll get watered today and perk right back up. But yeah my snake plant is MASSIVE and desperately needs split and repotted. I’ve had it for… 4-5 years now? Literally only have watered it once a week and repotted it once. It doesn’t GAF.

I bought a $10 one at Walmart 5 years ago and it’s still going strong on my back porch. I’ve split it into 3 pots since then and I water it maybe once a week or so.

Jade plants have been super easy for us. We got one 8" tall, one stalk as a housewarming gift when we first moved out of the dorms, didn’t water it all summer, and it was fine. Started watering it and this is it now:

And it’s offspring:

Yes, some are happily growing on a dry, occasionally -watered styrofoam plate.

I have lost 4 snake plant leaves, and one is trying to decide if it will stick around.

I was trying for once a month, I’m not sure if I went too soon in Dec, or if something else changed.

otoh the fig tree from formeracquantance is still going strong after more than 15 years and never being repotted.

I can’t figure out how to do a spoiler. I’ve tried different ways and the text still shows up, so I’m obviously doing it wrong. Do you do the hide details thing first then type? Where do you actually type?

If you type where it says “this text will be hidden” and then you post, what you’ve typed will be “spoilered”. If you want to label your spoiler, you can delete the text in between the quotations, which says “Summary”, (leave the quote marks though!) and put something else there, like “Spoiler”. Try it here if you want!

If you have already typed something and you want to hide it, you can highlight it with your cursor and then click “Hide Details”.

Yay!

What happened us you deleted the beginning of the code too. You only want to delete what is between the quotation marks when giving it a title - so the word summary
