Joke’s on them, I don’t have work or a parents’ printer!

My friends and I joked that the biggest challenge in getting our grad school applications done was navigating the postal system to send in our completed apps.

We don’t either right now. Turned the last printer in when SirB left work and haven’t gotten a. New one :grimacing:

Me neither, the few times I need to print I send everything to Office Depot. I couldn’t keep the printer cartridges working in my old one for 12 cents a page.

The only reason we have a printer is my dad gave us his old one. All of his printers are from his work technically since he has a home office (he’s been WFH since before it was cool).

The library has a printer. It’s maybe 10 cents/page.

It really annoys me to have to pay money to file my taxes.

I agree!
I hear that in some other counties, they basically send you a statement of what they think you owe or your refund is, and you only have to file if you don’t agree with their answer or need to claim additional credits, etc. I think the for-profit companies have made this so much more complicated than it needs to be.

I know. It’s annoying and I will have to remember to find some change before I go because the machine to print doesn’t take cards, only cash. I had to print a shipping label a few months ago and didn’t know they don’t take cards and had to scrounge around my car cushions.

How do you become a plant person? I’ve always been a gardener, like outdoors with vegetables. But I’ve never owned a house plant. I love how cozy houses look with all the plants around and I want my house to be cozy and full of green things, but I’m afraid they will all die and turn brown. Any recs for good easier plants to start with?

My indoor plants are fake. Probably not the best answer. @noitsbecky is probably the one to ask.

Ask on buy nothing and let fate decide? Just be sure to look up plant safety if you have pets. Personally my first as an adult was a spider plant and it’s been a great choice for me.

I wish I had a buy nothing group…I live in a tiny section of town that is outside of the radius of the three closest groups! I’ve asked for an exception but the groups are really strict here. So I’ve been looking at plants on fb marketplace but it is a little overwhelming. I may just try a spider plant!

Have you tried the app? The boundaries are a lot wider apparently.

You are in a perfect place to get some succulents and cacti, which tend to be lower maintenance. Don’t even think about getting any cacti with spines or thorns - you WILL get stuck no matter how careful you are.

I am impatiently waiting for the app to become more popular in my area. I do not want to deal with facebook!

Same! I keep toying with the idea. Maybe eventually I will cave.

I became a plant person just by buying plants and trying it out. I remember a coworker once said to me that plants just need three things, water, sunlight, and food. So I kept that in mind when I started buying plants.

I’ve learned that tiny plants in tiny pots are harder to keep alive than bigger plants in bigger pots. You don’t have to spend a ton, but I’d advise staying away from the little ones in little pots for $4 at the grocery store or whatever. Just go for more of a medium size.

For food, I just buy those little sticks and shove them in the wet soil. I don’t know if this is the best way to feed you plant, but it works for me. I only do it like twice a year. For water, usually less is more. Most plants don’t want too much water. Let the soil get fairly dry and then give it a good, thorough soak and then leave it alone until the soil is dry again. And sunlight, well, try to give them light. Some need more than others but there are many houseplants that are not too finicky.

Not finicky plants: Pothos for sure. These guys just don’t die, and they are so pretty and full and get long! They can handle low light or lots of light and if you forget to water them they just get droopy and sad but don’t up and die unless you are really trying to kill them. ZZ plants are pretty much in the same category as the wonderfully easy pothos. I’ve had no trouble with snake plants, and good luck with philodendrons. Spider plants are easy, too.

Avoid flowering plants, orchids, lilies, calatheas, fiddle-leaf figs, ferns. I mean, they are beautiful and I’ve tried a few of them even though I know better but I ended up sad and disappointed.

There are a lot of plants in the middle category between these hard-to-kill and will-die-if-you-look-at-them-funny plants, but you can have quite a nice collection just with the easy ones and then if you’re feeling brave after keeping those alive, branch out from there.

Hope that helps! If nothing else, get a medium-sized pothos and stick it near a window and see how it goes. It will go great, and you’ll want to get it some friends!
