I know for My Favorite Murder one of them just half-assed a rough draft and the other liked it so much they just kept it as a theme. I bet others are copying them.
A coworker of mine a few years ago once bought a used Herman Miller chair at a fire sale (tech startup that went under or something, bay area) and brought it into the office to use. I used it one week when he was away on vacation because I needed the software he had on his computer. It was the best damn chair I ever sat on in my life, before or since, and I am 45 years old.
So, yes. If you can afford it, yes. I am tempted all the time to get one. (But I am cheap.)
ET: I mean, buy it. The way I phrased it sounded like I was saying I agreed with your statement that it was ridiculous. It is not ridiculous. DO EEEET.)
Absolutely not ridiculous, especially if your office can offset cost.
I was on the hunt for chairs a while back, and narrowed down what I needed, which for me was a chair that goes down low enough for my feet to touch the ground, and an adjustable seat depth. I ended up with the fully chair, which I really like! My proportions and issues are different than your issues (I’m 5’5” but with disproportionally shorter legs (29” inseam jeans), and my struggles are back pain and tight hips).
My one counter argument (as someone not quite that short but with a really long torso/short legs so maybe pretty similar) is to think about the rest of your setup too. My shoulder and wrist issues are much worse if the height of the desk/keyboard/monitor are too low or too high. So, I actually do much better with a normal sized (but still fancy and fully adjustable) office chair with a footrest on the floor for my short legs.
Edited to clarify: it’s essential for me to have a 90 degree angle in my elbows when typing, and monitor height that is also ergonomic/neutral (eye line around the top of the monitor but you can look up ergo instructions)
I agree with the ergonomics advice. I’ve never tried a Herman Miller chair but now I want to.
I have a sit/stand table I use as a desk that doesn’t go low enough for my arms to be happy. I hate the trays under the desk. So my very crude hack was to take a card table, saw off the legs to the appropriate height, put it under the sit-stand table, and call it good. I’m very happy with this fix.
Definitely get the office to reimburse you for as much as possible.
As a fellow smol, I feel this. Have you looked into other office chairs that are meant for those of us on the more pocket sized side of things? I would struggle with getting an $1200 chair, especially if the office would only cover a portion. Maybe try out other, less expensive options first?
Thanks guys! I have the other ergo stuff worked out. The issue is the chair, for certain.
My concern with going the route of choosing cheaper chairs is that I may end up with a bunch of kind of crap options but now I bought it so…
I guess I’ll look around a bit.
Eta:
Oh god kid chairs really?? Hahahaha
I had gotten the hbada task chair off Amazon and was happy with it for my size. It was $85 and I was able to return it (had to dismantle, but free return shipping) when I didn’t get the remote job.
I currently have a kids chair for my sewing and once I get over how silly it looks, it actually works decently well!
Remind me how tall you are?
Eta: this looks very nice! I might go sidiz kids tho because the arm rests look adjustable and my torso is also weird
I have wanted to try a herman miller chair for aaages but have never gotten the chance. Spending $$ on a safe working setup seems like a good investment to me.
My job came with a Herman Miller chair and I hate chairs and sitting, but if I have to sit at my desk, it’s definitely the best office chair I’ve ever used. I have pretty severe back pain, but I can deal with sitting in that chair for 1-2 hours at a time, which says a lot because almost no other type of chair/stool/seat achieves that. If you sit at your desk for the full work day, I think it’s totally worth the investment…8 hours (or whatever your work day is) is around the same amount of time most people spend in bed, and $1200 wouldn’t be an extreme amount to spend on a comfortable bed…I think anything you sit on/lay on/stand on for long periods of time should be high quality and really comfy
I had the fully adjustable Mirra for years, same as the one in the listing except there was also a fabric covering on the back. Got it refurbished for $800 and it was worth every penny, totally saved my back with the adjustable lumbar support. Now you can find it cheaper
I’m 5’2", so close enough.
And here’s one with the back fabric. I think it adds a lot of comfort and is worth it.
My parents have two Herman Miller Aeron chairs, and they are amazing. My dad and I both have herniated discs in our backs and these are by far the best chairs I’ve sat in for that. My parents are perpetual upgraders, and I keep hoping they’ll upgrade these chairs (they’ve had them for at least a decade?) and I’ll get the old ones but no such luck
Also I’m within a couple hundred dollars of the price spent on less great chairs, so take that as you will
Wow, I didn’t know you could get them for as low as $500! My current set up is crap…
5’1 3/4"
Also, for those of us in the under 5’4" club, does anyone not have back/shoulder/neck problems? I feel like everyone our size (perfect) has issues from how the world is designed for average heighted men.
I thought I just had those problems from stress and poor posture
I love the Herman Miller Mirra, think it’s much more comfortable than the Aeron and seems to be sized for most bodies (went to a store and tried all the fancy chairs). There’s a Mirra 2 now but I don’t see how it’s that much different from the original. You can find so many of them refurbished now and they’re very inexpensive! I wanted to clear up my room space since I no longer use the desk much, and sold my Mirra on Craigslist for $250 (there were some major cosmetic issues… thanks Aslan). Now I just have an exercise ball that I keep in the closet, but yesterday I was on the computer catching up on bookkeeping and it really made my back hurt!
The important thing is to get a “fully adjustable” or “fully loaded” version. The base version does not have lumbar or seat adjustment (the front of the seat can be curved down if you’re short so that you can sit all the way back). Also like I mentioned, I think the fabric back is worth some extra money.
Also make sure that you get hardwood casters for your floors, they’re softer and won’t scratch.
Found online: fully loaded with the back fabric and free shipping for $500! It says the sale ends in 7 hours.
Ahhhh I so want to pull the trigger, but I need to try to refinance very soon and I think I can’t have my debt to income ratio be so lopsided (even if only temporarily), and I also definitely need to buy new grow lights this month. Maybe they will go on sale again somewhere in a few months…
I’m sure you’ll be able to find them somewhere! We got one for Marmalade in 2020 for $400 shipped!
