I’m amused by you guys boggling at King of Prussia At one level I know it’s a weird name… but also, it’s so normal to me!
The KoP mall’s name always makes me laugh too. I think I was only in the mall proper once shortly after moving to Philly, but one of my employers recently opened a store there and I kind of want to pick up a shift and check it out (and go run at Valley Forge!).
Does anyone have any experience with upholstery cleaners (as in, what is the best)?
(By which I mean, product, not a machine.)
What quality of upholstery are we discussing?
I found the stuff that comes free with the sofa to be 100% useless
Dish soap and water and blotting is very effective but not always color fast
Liquid glycerin soap and water and scrubbing effective and less stripping
Water and vinegar and a rag and wiping gently with a rag for general freshening.
But I haven’t used fancy choose it yourself upholstery cleaners
USA tax question.
If you have a mortgage, is that interest still deductible? And if it is, is that separate from the standard deduction?
ETA: I think I’ve answered my question, in that yes, it’s still deductible, but not separate from the standard deduction. But if someone knows more, I’m all ears
Yes, deductible, but only if you itemize.
It’s an old upholstered dining room chair (I think). I got it for free, structurally it is in great shape but the fabric is white (or maybe supposed to be cream) and is dirty just from years of use. When I got it I thought I would just try my hand at reupholstery (although my plan was to start with something easier… like a foot stool), because free is free. But if I can clean it that would be easier. It isn’t an antique, but neither is it new. It might be satin? I’ll take a photo.
Also, there is now a lower cap on the amount you can deduct, so all the rich people with their jumbo mortgages can no longer deduct the full interest amount. Wah wah. Sorry, not sorry.
Because the standard deduction is higher now, for many people who used to deduct it now makes more sense to take the standard deduction because it is higher (unless they have a lot of other deductions also that you don’t take if you don’t itemize). (It would depend on how big a mortgage.) I am right on the cusp.
The limits have changed, but not the basic rules – our mortgage was always so small that it never made sense for us to itemize instead of taking the standard deduction in the first place. And that was all before the new standard deduction. It was frustrating in a first world problems sort of way.
If it’s satin it will get water spots because of the width of the weave
This is true. My mortgage is (pretty) small (relative to so many out there). I’m kind of relieved that I am on the edge now because itemizing is kind of a pain when you don’t have that much other stuff to itemize (like a couple hundred in donations to thrift stores, a couple hundred to charity, etc… I’d rather eat the potential break (which is so small for these small amounts anyway) that mess with itemizing. And as the principal goes down the interest does too, so this year might have been the cutoff (for me) anyway, without sending thousands more to charity.
How do I know if it is though? Also, I don’t want to spot clean, really I want to clean the whole thing.
Ahhhhhh, nevermind. Now that I actually look at it (it’s living outside for the moment) I am pretty sure it is satin and that it has water spots. But, looking at it, I think I could reupholster it myself, there is braid trim all the way around that would neatly hide the staples (and I am guessing is just glued down). I would also want to refinish the wood, and it would be a lot easier with no fabric on it. I suspect I can get the fabric off in one piece and use it as a template. Worth a consideration anyway.
If you’re pretty sure you’re going to recover, though, give cleaning a try first. Nothing to lose at that point.
This is exactly what I would do. Also there’s probably some YouTube videos on just how to do this, I feel like I’m always getting suggested videos for this kind of stuff
Ooh!! I’ve seen cool glass backsplashes - https://pin.it/hqgkmdqqpd7lks
That said, I hate grout too but our kitchen has white subway tile and white grout and it’s easy to clean on a backsplash (not so for floors! Will never do a floor with grout that’s not basically black)
Video game recs for the nintendo switch?
- Zelda Breath of the Wild
- The Untitled Goose Game
I have a HSA account that I put money into after tax. I know that is not normal, but for some reason my boss set it up that way. I don’t know why. I assume my deposit ($1,000) can be claimed somewhere in my taxes for this year, but does anyone know where I would do that? My taxes are pretty simple and I would prefer not to take them somewhere or pay for turbotax if I can just do them myself.
ETA Is it worth even messing with? Will it make my taxes more difficult?
