I have products I love from the ordinary, but you need to understand which ingredients your skin wants, and then they sell products with those ingredients.

So in my case, my skin likes argan oil. It’s like $7 or less from the ordinary. Or $17-100 for a similar bottle elsewhere.

But right now my skin is having a pregnancy induced hissy fit, and I couldn’t figure out what ingredients it needs… So I’m using a skin balm/cream from bee23 because she is a skin boss and I trust her and her formulae, and I had an inkling that beeswax would rescue me where my typical oil+hyaluronic acid combo wouldn’t.

If I want retinoids or vitamin C… The ordinary is my go to. In summer their light moisturizer is great. I’d say they actually replace high end serums better than they replace mid range or drugstore all in one products.

But if you want an all in one, and are used to an all in one, they might not fit you. Or you might want one of their starter kits

I also love their foundation - coverage and consistency more like a $150 product, but for $7-10. And a decent range. Including a golden base that’s very me. Again replacing high end not mid range.

Thanks for tagging me, you know what kind of need I am!

Turtle girl, if you tell me what you’re using and what you desire, let me know and I’ll find you options

Would anyone like to volunteer to offer critical feedback on a project for me? Experience with the disability community a plus but not required.

I’m working on a slide show for an event for kids with disabilities and their families that will bring together a ton of resources, the slide show will run in the background at the event as people filter through throughout the day. I want to make sure that the presentation makes sense and is easy to read. Someone else is reviewing the content to be sure it’s accurate in terms of what organization is at what table, etc. but I’d love some fresh eyes to review the design and usability of it. I will be sharing it through Google Drive.

That may be why The Ordinary confuses me a little, I am used to things saying “for problem x, use product y”. I guess I don’t know what my skin needs because of that. I will wander around the website and read more carefully. I have been using Philosophy for a long time, and while I have no real complaints, I didn’t know if it was good to use the same thing forever or if I should add other things in as I get older.

Philosophy is a good line, and if you’re happy, you don’t need to switch. But if someone had just tried a sample of hope in a jar from philosophy, and liked the effect, didn’t have brand loyalty and wasn’t sure about the cost, we’d look at the active ingredients: hyaluronic acid and “pineapple extract”

That leads me to looking at a few things from the ordinary - probably the moisturizer with HA, because the straight serum needs more combining to use properly, and some kind of gentle acid for evening (starting at less than daily and seeing what the skin likes). Depending on the person’s skin and climate, the moisturizer with HA is probably too lightweight for at night. So maybe a squalene or facial oil for night.

So we’re looking at 3 products, around $21 - not a huge difference from grabbing hope in a jar on sale, but more customized in terms of layering products and how often we need the acid (we might even decide to use the facial oil most days, and the moisture only certain days). And the facial oil and acid will each last much longer than the moisturizer, so even though our initial outlay will be similar to the hope in a jar, our ongoing costs will be much less. And if we have a future issue and want to layer in a product for that, it lets us further adjust the routine for very little money.

Thanks!

I’ve been mostly using the “when hope is not enough” and “miracle worker” lines as I’ve gotten older. I have multiple items that I sort of rotate with no rhyme or reason. I have cleansers, creams, serums, peels, eye products, you name it, because maybe this product will be just amazing lol. It doesn’t seem like most of the products give the percentage of say vitamin C, only that it’s in there, so it’s hard for me to guess which of TheOrdinary ones would be the right one to try. I think I look younger than I am, and would like to keep up with good skincare as I age. And while spending less would be nice, that really isn’t my goal I suppose.

Yeah, this was just an example of how/when these products make sense. It sounds like you’re at a point where you maybe want to find someone to consult with you on your skin and look more at the extras you throw in there and figure out what would be best, vs buying things based on hopes and marketing?

It sounds like overall you’re doing a great job with your skin!

Ha. Buying things based on hopes and marketing. Yup!

What’s the best way to hide/repair/embellish a small bleach stain? Asking for my favorite gray t-shirt. So far I’ve considered tie-dye or embroidery.

Where is the stain?

An appliqué (similar to embroidery idea). Tie dye is good.

On the chest where a pocket would go. Actually, that’s another idea - I might could sew a pocket over it. Applique is a great suggestion!

Is this oven safe? Is it stovetop safe? It’s a bhg Dutch oven that I got for free from a neighbor and it doesn’t say anything about being oven safe or stovetop safe.

I haven’t seen BHG as a brand, but I’ll assume it’s no worse than tramontina? Should be safe on the stovetop up to medium high (as long as it doesn’t go totally dry) and oven safe up to 450°F.

Thanks! The recipe calls for medium heat on the stove and then 375 in the oven so I should be good.

Enameled cast iron is usually quite durable and since the lid handle is metal rather than plastic oven should be no problem either.

Agreed. Looks like metal handles, so might be safe to even higher temps. My Le Creuset Dutch over lid has a plastic knob - really you overly expensive motherf’ers?

Ha! Yeah, I ended up buying the stainless steel knobs for my Le Creuset dutch ovens. Now I burn my fingers even more often. You’d think I’d learn…

Those are still safe up to like 400°, and it’s pretty easy to unscrew them for higher temperatures like doing no knead bread recipes. Or you can get stainless steel replacements. But yeah, it’s kind of annoying that the plastic is standard.

Yep I remove the knob as needed when I make no knead bread! How did you know? Just kind of irritating given the price.
