Part of this could be technique? There’s no reason to stab the thermometer into the skin under your tongue. Just lightly holding it in the space under your tongue and closing your mouth around it is enough. It doesn’t have to be pressed into anything.
Maybe I just need a bigger thermometer? Ours seems quite small and thin and my teeth are such that they don’t close around it. I really have to mash my lips together and tip my head back so that it doesn’t fall right out of my mouth and that is uncomfortable.
I’m looking at Walgreens’ site and the ones that go in your mouth seem to give a reading in 10-30 seconds. This one is very old and I have to leave it in for a full 2 minutes (I timed it!) before it beeps.
That would solve the problem right there, honestly, only having to keep it in for 30 seconds or less.
Holding it with your hand and not lips will likely help. But yes, faster rewards are quite nice! New batteries can speed up reading for some too.
I calculated just how old this thing is. I remember my then-husband being totally grossed out because our vet had told us to take our cat’s temp at home, and he was like, “we do not have a thermometer that has not been in a cat’s butt now!” (Yes, I washed it and sanitized it. Compulsively.) I got divorced in 2004… so, yeah. Maybe time for a replacement?
My most successful youtube video.
And the way I have made two pairs of jeans last more than a decade.
If the hole hasn’t already formed- possibly with an iron on patch.
Delightful, thank you. I will have to use lines of straight stitches since that’s all my treadle will do, but I think it will work okay, too. Does the presence of the patch or the stitching bother you at all when you’re wearing the jeans?
I’ve never noticed it. It might feel different in skinny jeans though. I don’t think I’d like a denim patch as that would be thicker.
I think darning is technically lots of vertical stitches and then lots of horizontal stitches. I’m just lazy so wacky free motion works.
Also- a treadle will do free motion, you just use an index card to cover the feed dogs. I know a few people who quilt on treadles. (My machine will lower them for me, or I set the stitch length to zero, but sometimes I forget and my non-stick pad just covers them for me- but the basic action needed for free motion is "needle goes up and down while I move things on the machine.)
It’s noticeable on mine, especially since the patch isn’t a stretchy as the rest of it, but it’s not uncomfortable. By the time I have to reinforce that area my jeans have gotten pretty baggy as all the elastic sags. If you have non-stretch denim it may be better.
That’s a good point about free motion, thanks!
I don’t even know how much money it would take to get me into skinny jeans! My style is “old lady comfortable” and I’m very happy with that.
All stretch all the time here, but yes, it’s saggy at this point.
My dog keeps ripping her same nail, once every couple months, and bleeds everywhere. The nail hasn’t properly fallen off. What are the options here? Would the vet like, remove the nail and let it regrow better somehow? We could call obviously, but they won’t get back to us until Monday.
Is there a part of it that’s long or sticking out that she keeps catching on something?
I can’t tell. Nothing has seemed obviously off or different, which is why I haven’t done anything about it before. She just megazooms like a dumdum and then starts bleeding
Eta each time she does it, it seems worse though. Like, started with spotting blood on things. But this time was BAD. My garage damn near looks like Dexter visited.
Can you take a picture of the paw/nails?
Also - nails bleed like that even if they are basically fine and just nicked. I’ve cleaned up those crime scenes before.
She’s currently bandaged up, since history tells me she’s at risk of reopening for the next day or so. I’ll try to remember to get a photo when I remove it (or lets be honest, she escapes it).
It’s just so weird it’s always the same toe. If it wasn’t, I would just chalk it up to the insane level of G force zooms she does. And it may be that. I just don’t want to be a bad pup parent, assume it’s fine, and not get treatment for something I should be addressing. I’m always worried I’ll miss something with her needs now that the baby is here.
Do you have a stiptic pencil or the equivalent powder to chemically coagulate the wound? That might help to stop the bleeding.
Worth talking to your vet about longer term solutions.
I don’t, but that’s a good idea. And astounding to realize- I had stuff on hand forever because of chickens.
You can use cornstarch, too.
If the nail itself is fractured this will keep happening over and over even though the quick closes/heals in between times.
If that is what’s happening, the vets I’ve worked with recommended removing the portion of the nail at the fracture line, bandaging for comfort/cleanliness for a couple days, and letting it regrow (removal under sedation typically).
Ty! I’ll go ahead and call on Monday then and see if they can take a look.
I want to have my phone remind me to do something once I’m awake and looking at my phone. I don’t want to set an alarm - I don’t want it to wake me, just want to do it asap when I get up, and I consistently look at my phone shortly upon waking up.
Any ideas?
