I don’t know what that is and am not joining but I bet that you both run lots and are generally amazing.
SMACKY YOU ARE THE SILLIEST GOOSE.
I do not run, my body is made to bail hay/life weights. I’d almost rather be struck with a small to medium sized frying pan than run. BUT it helps my psyche in the start of winter, so… here I am, lacing up my eBay 2012 Brooks trail runners and ready to give it a go again (I used to run every winter).
Is assimilation the end result of all disasporas?
No.
Greyman is interested in Metal/prog rock, but wants not growley/screamy bands. I need recs because all my metal is growley or screamy.
I was trying to think of pro, and anti examples.
I think the shift in the definition of ‘whiteness’ in the early 20th century is a pro example. We no longer have signs that No Irish Need Apply, nor do we have very many remaining Little Italys. A European heritage is now considered majority, and we’ve carved out a St. Patrick’s day celebration.
More modern setting, the gay diaspora seems to be gliding into assimilation.
On the anti side, the Jewish diaspora has never really, to my semi-uneducated knowledge, resulted in full assimilation. And of course, the African diaspora in the US.
Perhaps the true question is: is lack of diasporic assimilation a result of prejudice, or the reason of continued prejudice?
The existence of anti examples (the Jewish diaspora is the specific example that came to my mind) is what made me plainly answer “no,” since your question was about “all.”
Genuine question, not trying to be argumentative: what is the “gay diaspora”?
Yeah, the original question was pretty lazy. I think the follow up what I was actually wondering.
The mainstreaming of homosexuality in most of the Western/developed/whatever-the-phrase countries. No more need to press into small ghettos, when the mainstream is no longer seeking to break your bones. The flip side of acceptance is the weakening of those intense community ties.
A big driver of (white) cultural assimilation in the US was first anti-German sentiment in WWI and then all the emphasis on (generally WASPish) patriotism up through the 50s. Non-English language newspapers (some in print for more than 100 years) disappeared and all sorts of other changes in various ethnic enclaves happened, some perhaps inevitable but others were definitely to make them seem less threatening to the dominant culture.
WHY HELLO.
I mostly like folk metal/neofolk/post-metal. I can dig up some recs there. But especially if he leans prog, he should definitely give Dream Theater a go. There’s also going classic with Led Zeppelin and Tangerine Dream and Yes.
Other bands I can think of off the top of my head that are minimal screamy that I’ve enjoyed: Blind Guardian; Mago de Oz; Agalloch; Nightwish; Ulver IF you grab the post-metal albums and not the black metal ones; The HU.
Might like jesu (depending on the album). Can get real shoegaze-y but also prog/metal. I like some SO MUCH and a lot of it okay.
And Pinkish Black!! They’re on Relapse records.
I also listen to a lot of Sleep because it’s not too scream-y. Probably too stoner-doom, though. I know these recs are a little disparate when it comes to metal sub-genres. I also assume you’ve heard of them, as I’m a casual metal listener. I admit. Please feel free to educate me
Possibly Botanist - black metal focused on nature. It is sometimes screamy but their screamy has a less intense confrontational feel about it and at least to me feel sortof like you’re in the middle of someone’s shouting into the void.
Depends on where on the melting pot <----> salad bowl spectrum the resulting society lies.
Is it worth $15 in coupons + shipping to go to a store in-person to look for Christmas presents? Or should I just order things and be done with it?
Here’s what I typically consider -
How much am I planning on spending (aka will shipping double the cost of the present)?
How crowded is the store?
Can I go to the store at off peak times?
Has the store been following Covid best practices?
Can I find many presents at the store, or likely just one?
Is this a (local) store you really like and want to support?
Is the store well-organized so it’s easy to find gifts and gift ideas?
Is the store pretty open, or is it crowded with merchandise, narrow aisles, etc?
Good points.
I could probably find most of what I needed and be in and out fairly quickly, but I’m also buying a pair of boots that are on sale, and I’m not sure they’d have the size I need. Without the shoes, my purchase isn’t over the minimum for the coupon, so it would be a moot point. I’ll still be buying from the same local-ish store, so I think it’s worth just buying it now to knock things off of my list/
Shoes, especially boots are tricky and better checked out in person IMHO.
What is a hot chocolate bomb and what is the point of them?
Why is hot chocolate not enough without explosives?
Maybe people figured out bath bombs were destroying their pipes and their urethras but still want to observe slow chaotic dissolution during a relaxing activity?
Well, the problem is that they’re for my husband, haha. So generally, very much yes, but in this specific situation, not such a big help to go in person
